To keep a local store-promotion playlist running in OBS after a Windows update, first confirm the right source is set to loop, then check that its media files are still available and that OBS starts with the intended scene. For one clip, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For multiple clips, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. A Windows update alone does not prove OBS settings were erased.
Choose the right OBS source for your promotion
Use a source that matches how you want the clips to play. OBS’s built-in Media Source handles one local file; VLC Video handles a playlist of multiple files. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents both approaches.

Looping and visibility behavior solve different problems. Loop controls what happens when a clip or playlist reaches its end. The Media Source restart option resets playback when the source becomes visible in the active scene. VLC Video has a separate Visibility Behaviour setting; the documented default is to stop playback while hidden and restart when visible.
Check the playlist after Windows restarts
- Open the relevant scene and source properties. In OBS, select the scene used for the store promotion, then open the Media Source or VLC Video source properties.
- Confirm the media is still found. Check that each file exists in the location OBS expects and that the source points to the intended file or playlist entries. If files were moved, renamed, or removed during cleanup, update the source paths.
- Verify playback behavior. For a single clip, confirm Loop is enabled. For a list, confirm the intended playlist files are present and Loop Playlist is enabled. Check restart-on-activation or VLC visibility behavior separately if the source must resume or restart after being hidden.
- Test the scene before relying on it. Start playback, let a clip reach its end if practical, and confirm the next playback matches the intended sequence or shuffle setting. Switch away from and back to the scene if visibility behavior matters.
These checks address common causes of a playlist appearing to stop, but they do not establish that Windows updates routinely move or delete OBS media files.

Make OBS open again after a reboot
If the promotion should resume after a computer restart, configure Windows to launch OBS. The OBS Project’s Launch Parameters guide documents startup parameters for selecting a scene, profile, or scene collection. For a Windows Scheduled Task, OBS says to set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe.
- Create or edit the startup task to launch the OBS executable in your OBS installation folder.
- Set the task’s Start in working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - If needed, use OBS launch parameters documented by OBS to select the intended scene, profile, or collection.
- Keep loop behavior configured in the source itself. The documented launch parameters do not include a command to start a media playlist directly.
If OBS changed after an update
Distinguish an OBS Studio update from a Windows operating-system update. The OBS Project Help Portal says OBS updates should leave settings intact, while noting that something else on the system may interfere with the update process. It specifically advises checking security software: a security product may scrutinize OBS after an update, so whitelist the OBS folder and refresh executable allowlist entries if changed executables are treated as new. This is a troubleshooting possibility, not proof that antivirus is always responsible or that every Windows update affects OBS.

For installation background, the OBS Project’s Windows Installation guide covers installation methods and notes a permissions caveat for ZIP installations. If OBS itself will not launch, consult that guidance before changing the playlist setup.
When a plugin is part of the playlist workflow
If your promotion source or automation depends on a third-party plugin, check that plugin’s compatibility with your installed OBS version. OBS Studio 33.0 updated plugin locations and identifies plugins in old locations as legacy; the official release notes also record a Windows plugin-loading fix. Those changes matter only if your workflow relies on a plugin, not when using the built-in Media Source or VLC Video source.
