To reduce the chance that Windows Update interrupts a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani or other devotional YouTube stream, set Windows active hours to cover your listening time and schedule any required restart for later. If the same PC restarts, playback on it stops; no Windows Update setting can keep that session playing through reboot. For sound to continue during a restart, play the stream independently on another supported device.
Choose the right fix for your situation
- You want to avoid an inconvenient restart: Set active hours and schedule a pending restart for a time you are not listening. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when the device is not being used and may ask you to schedule a more convenient time if it cannot do so. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
- You need a short delay: Temporarily pause updates, then let the pause expire or resume updates and install them. Pausing postpones updates; it is not a permanent way to turn them off.
- You need listening to continue through the PC’s restart: Start the stream on a second supported device that is not restarting. The restarting PC cannot continue its own browser playback.
Active hours and restart scheduling reduce the risk of interruption; they do not preserve playback during a reboot. Screen-off and sleep settings are separate from update restart controls.

Set Windows 11 active hours and schedule a restart
Set active hours
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options, then find Active hours. Set the hours to cover the times you normally use the PC for devotional listening. The exact controls can vary by Windows version and device.
Active hours are intended to prevent automatic restarts during the hours you are using the device. They do not block every update action or prevent you from restarting manually.
Schedule an update restart
- When Windows Update says a restart is required, look for Schedule the restart in Settings > Windows Update.
- Choose a time when you will not be listening, and keep the PC available to complete the restart.
Microsoft says Windows may prompt you to choose a more convenient restart time if it cannot restart when the device is not in use. A scheduled restart is a timing change, not a way to keep the stream playing while Windows reboots.
#1 Best Overall
- KEEP YOUR COMPUTER, WI-FI AND ROUTER RUNNING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES: Supplies short-term battery power during outages to maintain internet connectivity and allow safe shutdown of computer during power interruptions
- POWER PROBLEMS DON'T ONLY HAPPEN DURING STORMS: 23 minutes of runtime (at 100W load) guards against outages, while surge protection shields connected devices from unexpected power events that happen even on a normal day
- PROTECT EVERYTHING ON YOUR DESK: 5 well-spaced outlets with full battery backup and surge protection, plus 2 surge-only outlets for less critical gear
- PHONE CHARGER: Keep your phone charged even when the power's out. The built-in 1.5A USB port works during outages
- EASY BATTERY REPLACEMENT KEEPS COSTS LOW: Swap the internal battery in minutes when it ages out, no need to replace the whole unit (APC replacement battery APCRBC154, sold separately)
Pause updates briefly if you need more time
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Pause updates and choose an available end date.
- After your listening period, resume updates or allow the pause to expire, then check for and install updates.
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance allows pausing for up to 35 days from the current date. While updates are paused, updates that might require a restart are not downloaded or installed, and Windows will not automatically restart to finish those updates until the pause ends. Updates resume afterward unless you resume sooner. The limit and controls may differ on other Windows editions. See Microsoft’s Pause updates in Windows guidance.
Use a pause as a short-term scheduling measure, not a permanent security-update policy. Delaying updates for too long leaves the device without fixes it would otherwise receive.

If playback must continue through a restart
Start the YouTube stream on another supported device, such as a phone, tablet or another computer, before the Windows PC restarts. That device must be playing independently; casting or connecting the restarting laptop to a display does not make its browser session survive a reboot. YouTube lists using another supported device, Chromecast, or a laptop connected to a TV by HDMI among troubleshooting options, but does not describe those options as a guaranteed handoff through a Windows update restart. See YouTube’s computer streaming and video troubleshooting guidance.

If you want playback to continue while you are away from the computer but do not want it to sleep, Windows 11 has separate controls at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Adjust the sleep timeout as appropriate for your device and power use. This can help prevent sleep from stopping local playback, but it does not control Windows Update or prevent an update restart. Check for YouTube’s unattended-playback prompt
Even if Windows does not restart, unattended web playback may stop for a separate reason: YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” after 60 minutes of uninterrupted autoplay on the web and wait for you to select “Yes.” This is independent of Windows Update. See YouTube Help’s explanation of the “Continue watching?” prompt.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support considerations
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. If the devotional stream runs on a Windows 10 PC, do not assume that pausing or scheduling updates restores ongoing security support; check Microsoft’s current guidance for options applicable to your device. See Microsoft’s Pause updates in Windows page.

Microsoft published an update on August 14, 2026, about grouping some restart-requiring driver, .NET and firmware updates with a monthly security update for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1. The experience is rolling out gradually, is not available on every device, and has exceptions: some updates can still install sooner, and updates will not be held indefinitely. It is not a guarantee of only one restart a month. See Microsoft’s update on grouped Windows restarts.

Troubleshooting interruptions
| What happened | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The PC restarted while the stream was playing | Active hours may not cover that time, or Windows needed a restart and it was not scheduled for later. | Check Settings > Windows Update, adjust active hours, and schedule a pending restart for a listening-free time. Use a second device if playback must continue through the restart. |
| The stream stopped while the screen was off | The PC may have entered sleep; screen timeout and sleep timeout are distinct controls. | On Windows 11, review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. This addresses sleep, not update restarts. |
| YouTube paused and asked whether you were still watching | The web autoplay continuation prompt can appear after 60 minutes. | Select “Yes” when prompted, or use a listener/device arrangement that does not depend on unattended web autoplay. This prompt is not an update failure. |
| You cannot delay an update indefinitely | Pause updates is temporary, and the selected Windows 11 end date can be at most 35 days from the current date. | Choose a short pause only if needed, then resume or let it expire and install updates. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that plays uploaded devotional videos as a continuous live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from keeping a browser tab open on a Windows PC. It runs the stream from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
