For better resilience, combine FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery with a tested, independent backup network; use a process supervisor only if FFmpeg itself exits. These measures reduce some interruptions, but they cannot guarantee an unbroken stream or restore footage viewers missed during a disconnect.
First identify what failed
“Internet outage” can mean different failures, and the right fix depends on which one occurred:

- Temporary output or socket failure: FFmpeg may still be running and producing audio and video, but its RTMP output has lost connectivity. The FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from some such failures.
- FFmpeg process exit: The encoder has stopped. A process supervisor may restart it, but restarting a process does not restore an unavailable network path.
- Loss of the only internet route: FFmpeg cannot send new data to YouTube until a working route returns. YouTube Help warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
- Power loss: The encoder or network equipment is off. Network recovery settings cannot address this failure.
For an outage that exceeds FFmpeg’s recovery path, YouTube needs a different working route—not just a retry setting.
Configure FFmpeg to attempt RTMP recovery
FFmpeg’s official formats and muxers documentation shows a FIFO-muxer pattern for continuing real-time processing during a temporary network failure while attempting to recover an RTMP output. Treat this as an illustrative command, not a universal drop-in: replace the input, mapping, codecs, and ingest URL with values appropriate to your stream and installed FFmpeg build.

rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEYGet the actual server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; never share or publish the key. The command uses an RTMP URL as a placeholder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, so use the ingest URL supplied for your stream and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol.
-f fifowith-fifo_format flvplaces a FIFO muxer between encoding and the FLV output format used for RTMP streaming. It can let processing continue while the output encounters a temporary network failure.-attempt_recovery 1requests recovery attempts.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between attempts to one second in this example. It is a retry interval, not a promise that YouTube playback will resume within a second.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows packets to be dropped if the FIFO queue overflows. This avoids keeping an unbounded backlog, but a long failure can mean lost content.
The documented example does not establish that every RTMP or RTMPS error can be recovered, that no frames or audio will be lost, or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback. Test the exact command with your input, FFmpeg release, and YouTube ingest configuration before relying on it.

Do not mistake HTTP reconnect options for RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, and -reconnect_at_eof for its HTTP protocol handling. Their presence does not establish retry behavior for an RTMP output URL. For YouTube RTMP output, use the FIFO recovery approach as a testable pattern rather than assuming HTTP options will solve the disconnect.

A recovery option cannot compensate for a connection that regularly fails to sustain the encoder’s output. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Measure upload at the actual streaming location and at the time you expect to go live, with other realistic network use in mind. Advertised download speed is not a substitute for an upload test.

If upload is insufficient or unstable, lower the video bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives these example recommendations:

These are YouTube encoder specifications, not measurements of Indian ISP performance and not proof that a particular broadband or mobile connection can sustain a given rate. Check the current YouTube settings guidance for the stream’s resolution and frame rate rather than treating these examples as a complete settings list.

Check encoder settings and ingest details
- YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR).
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Use the server URL and key shown in Live Control Room, and protect the key as a credential.
- Use RTMPS where available for encryption to Google’s servers. Encryption improves transport security; it does not maintain a connection during an internet outage.
Test the recovery plan before going live
- Match test conditions to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, since a static or silent test may not reflect its actual encoding and bandwidth demands.
- Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status, and note any specific error messages.
- Simulate a disconnect. Test the FIFO recovery behavior using the actual input and ingest setup. If you have a backup encoder, YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Verify local recording. If you are making an archive, check that the file exists, is growing during the stream, and plays correctly afterward. A recovered live connection does not restore video that was not delivered during the interruption.
Use a genuinely independent backup internet path
If the primary broadband route is unavailable for longer than the recovery path can tolerate, the encoder needs another route to YouTube. That could be a separately provisioned mobile connection or second fixed connection, but only if it is actually available at the streaming location and does not share the same failure point.

A cellular failover router is a possible setup, not a guaranteed fix for Indian outages. Before choosing one, check the local carrier’s coverage and supported bands, the data plan, upload capacity at the venue, and whether automatic switching works in a real test. A router cannot create cellular coverage, and the available evidence does not establish a particular model, carrier, plan, or local performance.

What a backup encoder can and cannot do
YouTube’s backup-encoder guidance calls for matching settings between primary and backup streams for failover, including resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, and bitrate. Test that the player actually rolls over before the event.
A second encoder addresses encoder or ingest redundancy; it does not provide an independent internet route if both encoders depend on the same broadband connection. For resilience to an ISP outage, verify that the backup encoder can use a separate working connection as well.
Power needs its own plan
If local power goes out, FFmpeg and the network equipment may stop. If you use a UPS, size it for the encoder and networking equipment and test its runtime with that load; do not assume it will keep a long stream online. A UPS also cannot preserve service if the internet route itself is unavailable.

Troubleshoot an interruption in order
- Check the two status sources. Note when the problem began, read FFmpeg’s log, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still alive. Confirm that the process has not exited and that the local input still has healthy audio and video. If the process exited, a supervisor can restart it, but that addresses process management—not a failed internet route.
- If FFmpeg is running but transmission fails, test the path out. Measure outbound upload and check connectivity to the ingest service. YouTube directs operators with connection-test problems to their ISP.
- If using redundant ingestion, confirm the configuration. Check that primary and backup streams match the required settings and run the failover test before the scheduled broadcast.
- After service returns, inspect the result. Review stream health and check the local archive for gaps or damage. A successful reconnection cannot retroactively deliver missing footage.
