Run FFmpeg inside a persistent tmux session on the remote server, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder keeps running after your SSH client disconnects. Add FFmpeg’s -nostdin option for background use; it prevents console-input checks but does not keep a process alive by itself.
Keep FFmpeg running with tmux
tmux runs a terminal session on the server independently of the SSH client. Detaching disconnects your terminal view without ending the programs running inside the session.

Connect to the server over SSH and start a named tmux session:
tmux new -s youtube-live -
In the tmux shell, start FFmpeg with your actual input and YouTube output settings. Put

ffmpeg -nostdin [input and output options]Replace the bracketed text with the media input and the RTMP or RTMPS destination settings for your stream. The YouTube Live Control Room provides the live server URL and stream key needed by an encoder; its current labels and workflow may vary. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

When you reconnect, return to the session with:
tmux attach -t youtube-live

What -nostdin does—and does not do
FFmpeg normally checks console input. In background operation, those checks can cause a process to suspend; -nostdin suppresses them. It is a safeguard for unattended terminal use, not a persistence mechanism. The persistent session is what separates FFmpeg’s lifetime from the SSH terminal. FFmpeg’s FAQ documents this behavior and notes that redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative on Linux and macOS: FFmpeg FAQ.

FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly, and its documentation index advises checking local documentation when using an older build. If you are unsure whether an option is available in your installed version, consult that build’s documentation or run ffmpeg -h. See the FFmpeg documentation index.
Protect the YouTube stream key
Your stream key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed. Treat it as secret: do not put a real key in shell history, a screenshot, a public script, or an article or support post. YouTube explains stream-key settings in its Live Control Room stream settings.

If the key is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Do not assume the old key remains safe after exposure; follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current interface.

tmux protects a running process from the SSH client disconnecting. It does not restart FFmpeg if it exits, recover the stream after the server reboots, or restore a lost server or network connection. Those are separate failure points: process lifetime, host availability, network reachability, and YouTube ingest configuration.

A process supervisor may be appropriate if you need unattended restart or recovery at boot, but the exact configuration depends on the server’s operating system and the restart behavior you want. The instructions here do not configure or verify a supervisor; do not treat tmux as an automatic-restart guarantee.
Stop the broadcast deliberately
Detaching from tmux is not an end-stream command. To stop sending the feed, stop FFmpeg in its tmux session—for example, return with tmux attach -t youtube-live and use Ctrl-c in the FFmpeg terminal. Depending on the stream settings, you may also need to end the stream in the Live Control Room. Check the current control-room status rather than assuming that closing SSH or detaching ended the broadcast; YouTube’s encoder guidance describes stopping the encoder feed.
