Can I Play Copyrighted Music in a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not unless you have permission that specifically covers broadcasting the music in a continuous YouTube live stream. Buying a song, subscribing to a music service, crediting the artist, or seeing another channel use the track does not by itself grant those rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream. A license may also need to be paired with a Content ID allowlist entry for your channel.

This is a practical guide to YouTube’s published rules, not a legal determination about a particular song. Copyright and exceptions vary by jurisdiction; do not assume any music source or license guarantees that a stream will avoid claims or interruption.

What rights do you need for a 24/7 music stream?

You need rights for the use you actually plan: live broadcasting on YouTube, continuous or 24-hour use, the territories where viewers can access the stream, and monetization if applicable. If YouTube retains the broadcast as an archive or VOD, confirm that the permission also covers that use.

A song can involve separate rights in the composition and the particular sound recording. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators are responsible for necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • A personal listening purchase or subscription is not, by itself, permission to broadcast the recording. Microsoft’s streaming guidance likewise notes that paid personal-use access does not establish streaming permission. [Microsoft copyright and streaming guidance]
  • A license for one edited upload, another platform, or a limited territory or duration may not cover a continuous YouTube stream.
  • Credit, a disclaimer, not monetizing, or deleting the archive does not by itself clear the live broadcast rights.

What YouTube can do while the stream is live

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder, warn you, temporarily interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it if the content remains. A copyright strike can also terminate a live stream. These actions are distinct from a Content ID claim on an archive.

If an archive is retained, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream finishes. The live scan and the later archive claim are separate enforcement points, so permission for one does not remove the need to confirm rights for the other. [YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams]

Why a license may not prevent a live interruption

Permission from a rights holder and YouTube’s Content ID allowlist are separate practical checks. YouTube warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its allowlist. Ask the owner or its authorized administrator to allowlist your channel, and retain confirmation along with the license. [YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams]

If the music is by someone else, YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor. One contact’s approval may not cover every relevant right, recording, territory, or royalty participant. [YouTube for Artists: Going live for music channels]

Checklist before using commercial music

  1. Identify the exact track and recording. Confirm who controls the composition and sound recording, and whether additional rights holders or administrators are involved.
  2. Get written permission or a license. Make sure it explicitly covers YouTube live broadcasting, continuous or 24/7 use, the territories in which the stream will be available, and monetization if applicable.
  3. Confirm archive rights. If the stream will be retained as a VOD or archive, verify the grant covers that too.
  4. Arrange Content ID allowlisting. Have the rights holder or authorized administrator add your channel, and get confirmation before going live.
  5. Keep the paperwork and response details. Save the agreement, track list, allowlisting confirmation, covered territories and dates, and instructions for resolving a claim or interruption.

A license that says only “online use” or “video use” may not answer these questions. Check the grant itself rather than relying on a label such as “licensed,” “free,” or “royalty-free.”

Safer music options, and what to verify

YouTube Audio Library

YouTube describes Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe on its platform and says its library tracks will not be claimed through Content ID. Some tracks require attribution. The Audio Library guidance is framed around videos and does not expressly settle every continuous live-stream use case, so check the track’s terms and current platform guidance for your planned live stream and archive. Music you created

Original music can be an option if you control the relevant rights in both the composition and recording. Check that you have not transferred or exclusively licensed those rights in a way that conflicts with the stream.

Public-domain music

YouTube identifies public-domain music as a safe category, but status can be complicated. Check the composition and the particular recording separately, and account for the territories where the stream will be available. [YouTube: Tips to find safe music]

Creative Commons and other open licenses

Read the actual license. It may require attribution or restrict commercial use; commercial use is permissible only if the license grants it. YouTube’s Creative Commons guidance does not give you rights in third-party content on its own. [YouTube: Creative Commons content]

Third-party royalty-free libraries

“Royalty-free” does not mean unrestricted or automatically safe on YouTube. YouTube says third-party licenses define where and how music may be used, and it is not responsible for problems with music found on other channels or libraries. Verify live use, continuous duration, territories, monetization, archive rights, attribution requirements, and Content ID handling in the provider’s current written terms. [YouTube Audio Library guidance]

Creator Music

Creator Music is not a live-stream license: YouTube currently says it does not support licensing for live content. YouTube describes availability as limited to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion elsewhere pending. A track licensed for an eligible uploaded video does not thereby become cleared for a live broadcast. [YouTube Creator Music FAQ]

Does playing only a short excerpt make it okay?

No automatic “few seconds” allowance is established here. Nor does credit, a disclaimer, or choosing not to monetize grant broadcast rights. Fair use and similar exceptions depend on jurisdiction and specific facts; no blanket conclusion can be made for a continuous music stream.
