Sending a stream to YouTube over the network does not itself require a growing local recording, but a second output, recording path, or file-based HLS configuration can write to disk. Remove local outputs you do not need; if you do need files, manage their retention and enforce storage limits at the operating-system or service level.
Why a YouTube stream can fill local storage
FFmpeg can write to several destinations. A command may send one output to YouTube while also writing another output to a local file. File-based HLS creates local playlists and segment files. The YouTube destination therefore does not tell you whether the process is also consuming VPS storage.
FFmpeg options that adjust probing or packet and muxing buffers are not filesystem quotas. In particular, -max_muxing_queue_size and -muxing_queue_data_threshold relate to muxing queues, while -xerror stops and exits on an error; none is a proactive disk-usage cap. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Find which files and filesystem are growing
- Inspect the full command. Read every output after each input, including multiple outputs. Look for absolute or relative filenames, recording outputs, and HLS playlist or segment filename templates. The final YouTube URL may not be the only destination.
- Check how FFmpeg is launched. Review the process working directory and the wrapper, cron job, container, or service configuration. A launcher may supply output paths that are not obvious in the command you usually inspect.
- Measure the VPS, not YouTube symptoms. Identify which filesystem is filling and which files are growing. YouTube buffering or stream diagnostics do not establish that the VPS disk is full.
Remove or bound local outputs
If you only need to send the stream to YouTube
Remove unintended local recording outputs and file-based segment outputs from the command or launcher. Keep the intended network output and confirm the muxer and destination for each output. FFmpeg distinguishes network streaming configuration from file output configuration; inspect all destinations rather than assuming that a command with a YouTube URL writes only to the network. Exact edits depend on your current command.

If you need a local recording
A regular file grows as data is written. Decide how much history you need, where it should be stored, and how old recordings will be removed or rotated. A disk alert is useful, but monitoring alone does not prevent a file from consuming the remaining space.
If you need file-based HLS
HLS output uses local playlist and segment files, so set and verify a retention policy that removes files no longer needed. FFmpeg’s HLS temp_file flag writes a segment to a temporary name and renames it when complete. That helps avoid serving an incomplete segment; it does not delete old segments or limit the total directory size. See the FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation.

Enforce a storage boundary outside FFmpeg
Use disk-space monitoring and, where appropriate, an operating-system or service-level quota or limit for the VPS. Choose the mechanism for the actual operating system and filesystem, and set it to suit the storage allocated to the workload. The title does not specify those details, so there is no single safe quota command or retention policy that applies to every VPS.
Recheck the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your server before copying options. FFmpeg notes that its documentation is regenerated and advises users of older versions to consult the documentation installed locally.

Troubleshoot the symptom that actually occurred
