Copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder, start the encoder, and—if the broadcast is scheduled—check the preview and click Go live. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Before you create a stream key
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says users must also be at least 16. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance.
You do not need to buy a dedicated encoder to create a key. You can use streaming software or hardware you already have; the key is the credential that connects the encoder to YouTube, not a separate broadcast device.
Create or retrieve the key in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab. For a first stream, edit the stream details and create the stream. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load previous settings, including an existing key.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder cover the workflow.
- In your encoder, choose a YouTube preset if one is available. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into the server or RTMP URL field, and paste the key into the stream-key field. Keep the URL and key in their respective fields; they are separate values.
- Start streaming from the encoder. For an immediate stream, confirm that the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, select Manage > Schedule stream, create a stream or reuse settings, connect the encoder at the scheduled time, wait for the preview, and click Go live.
Keep the key secure
YouTube describes a stream key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it, share it in screenshots, or leave it in a public configuration. You can create a custom key for reuse, but reuse also means the same credential is stored in the encoder. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in every encoder that uses it. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Prepare an always-on broadcast responsibly
Check the stream before relying on it
Set up the encoder in advance. Before the public broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview, verify that the event can be opened from your channel and watch page and on a mobile device, and monitor audio and video quality. If you record locally, confirm that the local archive file is being created and usable. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming a connected encoder guarantees a successful public stream.
Do not assume a long stream will be archived
YouTube states that encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its wording does not guarantee automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer than that. If an always-on stream must also serve as a recording, make a separate preservation plan and check current YouTube behavior rather than relying on one uninterrupted, multi-day broadcast. Use HLS only when your setup calls for it
HLS is a specialized ingestion option for supported encoder workflows, including some HDR or codec requirements that RTMP does not support. It requires an HLS-capable encoder and has higher latency than RTMP. It is not needed for ordinary stream-key creation. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
