You can keep an ESP32 weather display glanceable without continuously illuminating a conventional screen: use an e-paper panel for persistent information, or switch an LCD’s backlight off between viewing periods. The right choice depends on your existing hardware, how often the weather must update, and whether you need a color interface.
Choose the display behavior that fits your use
| What you want | Practical option | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Weather information visible between updates without a continuously lit screen | SPI e-paper | Confirm the exact panel and controller are supported by your ESPHome version, and check its refresh behavior. ESPHome’s e-paper component documentation lists supported panels, including a 2.9-inch three-color WeAct panel. |
| Keep an existing character LCD | Control its backlight separately from display redraws | Check the backlight’s current draw and whether the ESP32 pin can safely control it directly. ESPHome documents backlight controls and recommends a transistor switch where the load exceeds pin capability. See ESPHome’s character-based LCD documentation. |
| Use a conventional color interface with responsive updates | Illuminated TFT | Plan for an illuminated screen rather than assuming redraw timing switches off its light. Adafruit’s ESP32-S3 weather-station guide is an example of a TFT showing temperature, daily high and low, and weather condition. |
These options are not backed by controlled, comparable measurements of power draw, readability, refresh time, or battery life. Treat e-paper as a design fit for persistent information, not a guarantee that every module draws no power while idle.

For an LCD, switch the backlight—not just the redraw interval
ESPHome’s display update_interval sets how often the screen is redrawn; it is not a command to turn off the panel or its backlight. See ESPHome’s display component documentation for the redraw setting.
For a compatible character LCD, ESPHome provides backlight() and no_backlight(). The LCD documentation also demonstrates a motion-triggered pattern: a motion sensor activates a template binary sensor, then a delayed-off timeout turns the light off. Its 90-second timeout is an example, not a recommended duration for every room or installation.

- Check the LCD model, wiring, voltage, and backlight current.
- Use the LCD component’s backlight controls to turn illumination on when needed and off after a chosen timeout.
- If the backlight current is beyond what an ESP32 output can supply, use an appropriately rated transistor or driver to switch the load.
- Set the redraw interval separately according to how quickly the weather information needs to refresh.
For an always-visible display, verify e-paper support first
E-paper can keep a static forecast readable between refreshes without relying on a continuously illuminated LCD or TFT backlight. Before choosing a module, match its exact panel and controller to ESPHome’s current SPI e-paper support list. A shared screen size or brand name alone does not establish compatibility; wiring, voltage, dimensions, and controller configuration matter too.
ESPHome’s documentation covers supported panel models and integrated boards. Generic controller configurations may require explicit pin and dimension settings, so use the configuration for the precise hardware rather than assuming a similar-looking module will work.

- There are no fonts embedded in the OLED controller, users can create fonts through font generation software.
Balance weather freshness with controller sleep
Set the redraw interval to the freshness your display needs. A display that changes only when new weather data arrives may not need frequent redraws, but changing update_interval does not itself put display hardware to sleep.
On supported IT8951-based hardware, ESPHome’s IT8951 e-paper documentation describes controller deep sleep through sleep_when_done. Sleep can reduce power use while adding wake-up latency, and defaults differ between integrated boards. Check the setting and behavior for your specific board and firmware before relying on it.

What battery-life claims can—and cannot—tell you
A community build combines an ESP32-C6, ESPHome, Home Assistant, a LiPo battery, and a WeAct 2.9-inch e-paper display: the project write-up reports its own battery-runtime claim. That is an individual project’s result, not an independently tested benchmark or a runtime estimate for other builds. The cited sources do not provide comparable measurements that would support a numeric battery-life or power-draw prediction across e-paper, LCD, and TFT options.
