On Pixel phones, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > [camera app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. Other Android phones may use different labels. This setting can reduce battery-related interruptions, but it cannot guarantee that an app will keep using the camera: Android also restricts camera access by background services.
Set the app’s background battery use
Start with the security-camera app’s own instructions, then check its Android battery setting. On Pixel phones, Google documents this path:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then See all apps.
- Select the security-camera app.
- Tap App battery usage.
- Enable Allow background usage and choose the least restrictive option offered that lets the app run in the background.
Labels and available controls vary by Android version and phone manufacturer. Google notes that some instructions on its battery-use page apply only to Android 14 and later; check its Pixel battery-use guidance for the relevant version.

Android describes three general background-use states: Unrestricted allows background work but may use more battery; Optimized is the default usage-aware mode; and Restricted can prevent background activity. Manufacturers determine some of the precise restrictions. See Android’s background optimization documentation.

Check camera permission and the app’s start procedure
Confirm that Android grants the app camera permission and follow the app’s current instructions to start monitoring. If it offers a setting specifically for background or screen-off monitoring, use the app developer’s documentation to confirm what that option does; the correct controls depend on the app.
Starting capture before switching away matters. Android’s documentation for Android 11 says that apps targeting Android 11 or later must declare the camera foreground-service type to use the camera from that kind of service. It also says a foreground service started while its app is already in the background cannot access the camera. Starting a generic background service is therefore not a universal fix. Test the screen-off behavior you actually need
Battery settings are a troubleshooting step, not proof that recording continues. Test with the app’s own status indicator or another reliable way to verify capture:
- Start monitoring using the app’s documented procedure.
- Switch to another app, then lock the screen.
- Check whether the camera app still reports active monitoring or whether the recording is available as expected.
- If the phone will be used both plugged in and unplugged, repeat the check in each condition.
This distinguishes an app that stops immediately when backgrounded from one affected by idle power management. It also checks the actual phone, Android version, app, and operating conditions you plan to use.

Understand what Doze and charging change
Doze can matter when a phone is unplugged, stationary, and has its screen off: Android restricts background CPU and network activity in those conditions. The device exits Doze when it is awakened or connected to a charger. These power-management details do not promise that an active camera session will survive screen-off use. See Android’s Doze and App Standby documentation.
For extended monitoring, charging may help with power, but it does not remove camera-access rules or ensure the app is designed to maintain capture. Use a compatible charger and cable for your phone.

If the camera still stops
- Check for a Restricted setting. If the app is set to Restricted, change it to a less restrictive available state and repeat the test.
- Consult the app developer. Ask whether that app supports screen-off monitoring on your Android version and how monitoring should be started.
- Check with the phone manufacturer. Background restrictions can differ by manufacturer and model, so use support guidance for the specific device.
- Do not assume battery optimization is the only cause. Android’s camera foreground-service rules impose separate limits, and changing battery settings does not override them.
Android’s background-execution guidance also explains that background services can be stopped after an app becomes idle, while foreground services are user-visible and subject to start requirements. A background-use toggle should not be treated as a promise that any app can run indefinitely. See Android’s background execution limits documentation.
