To stop an AI chatbot from using future conversations to improve its models, turn off the model-improvement or activity control in that specific account. The setting is different for each service: ChatGPT has Improve the model for everyone; Gemini uses Keep Activity; and Copilot has separate text and voice training controls. These settings generally do not erase existing chats or stop every kind of service retention, safety review, or feedback processing.
The steps below cover personal accounts for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and consumer Microsoft Copilot. Labels and app layouts can change; the controls described here reflect official provider guidance checked on October 7, 2026.

Turn off training in the account you use
Privacy settings do not carry over between providers. If you use more than one chatbot, adjust each account separately. The controls below govern model-improvement use as described by each provider; they are not a universal “do not process my data” switch.

ChatGPT
- Open the account menu and select Settings → Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone, then select Done.
OpenAI says this preference applies to the account across devices. New conversations are not used to train OpenAI models while it is off, but saved conversations remain in chat history. For a conversation you do not want in history or used to improve models, start a Temporary Chat. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve models; they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the associated conversation may be used to train models despite the account opt-out.

OpenAI also offers a Privacy Portal option labeled Do not train on my content. Settings are product-specific: the ChatGPT choice does not change Sora settings, and Codex has a separate Include environments control for additional environment context. OpenAI says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces are not used for training by default; API data is also excluded by default unless the customer opts in. Those defaults are not assurances about retention or other data handling.
Claude
Open Privacy Settings and review the current Model Improvement choice. Anthropic’s guidance says chat and coding-session data may be used to improve models when you opt in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you otherwise explicitly opt in through a program. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled.

Anthropic says raw content from connected apps is not included as such, but content copied directly into a Claude conversation may be. A thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback report is a separate route: Anthropic says it stores the entire related conversation in its secured back end for up to five years, and feedback data may be used for research and model training as permitted by applicable law.

Gemini
- In your Google Account, open Gemini Apps Activity in the activity controls.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
Google says future chats then do not appear in Activity and are not used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback. Chats may still be retained with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public; safety review may also occur.

Keep Activity can cover more than typed prompts: Google says activity may include shared material, feedback, browser-page context, connected-service information, and other interaction data. Turning off Keep Activity is not the same as disconnecting a connected app or deleting information already in Gemini Apps Activity. Google separately documents controls for audio and Gemini Live video or screen sharing, so check those controls if you use voice or live media.
Microsoft Copilot
For a signed-in consumer account, turn off both Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations if you want to cover text and voice.

- Copilot for Windows or macOS: profile icon → Settings → Privacy.
- Copilot mobile app: menu → profile icon → Account → Privacy.
Microsoft says future conversations are excluded from training after opting out. Its guidance distinguishes training from personalization, so you can keep personalization enabled while opting out of training.

Microsoft’s privacy-controls page warns that its instructions apply to the older app version and notes the updated app became available on August 18, 2026. If you use the updated app, follow the current privacy page linked from Microsoft’s notice and verify the settings in your installed version. The legacy consumer page says conversation history may be retained for 18 months.

What the controls do—and do not—cover
Opting out generally limits future model-improvement use; it does not mean a provider stops processing data needed to run the service. Chat history, memory or personalization, retention, abuse prevention, safety review, and training are distinct. A training switch should not be assumed to delete chats, remove existing data, or disable the other features.

The retention periods in this table are provider-specific statements, not a general industry standard. The settings also depend on account type and product: personal, business, API, work or school, and consumer-app accounts can have different defaults and controls.

Before sharing sensitive information
- Check the account and app version you are actually using; do not assume one provider’s setting changes another provider’s use of data.
- Review separate controls for voice, live media, connected apps, history, memory, and personalization when those features matter to you.
- Avoid sending feedback about a sensitive conversation when the provider says the feedback flow may include or retain the associated conversation.
- For other chatbot services, check that provider’s own privacy controls and terms. The steps here establish settings only for the four services covered above.
