To stop creator-inserted mid-roll breaks, set the livestream’s ad setting to Manual and do not insert any breaks. YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served when you do not insert them. This does not disable every ad: pre-roll and display ads may still appear when monetization is on, and YouTube’s documentation does not say whether ad controls behave differently at the boundaries of looping prerecorded material.
Choose the setting that matches your goal
YouTube documents three mid-roll approaches for live streams: Automatic, Scheduled, and Manual. They differ in who controls timing and whether breaks are suppressed, delayed, or placed at intervals. YouTube notes that Scheduled or Manual settings may have lower earnings potential than Automatic; that is YouTube’s platform guidance, not an estimate of what an individual channel will earn.
| Setting | How timing works | What it does about interruptions |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | You choose whether and when to insert a break while live. | If you insert none, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served. This is the clearest documented choice for avoiding creator-inserted mid-rolls. |
| Scheduled | YouTube lets you set breaks at intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Breaks are scheduled rather than triggered by an automatic frequency setting; this does not disable pre-rolls or display ads. |
| Automatic | YouTube chooses opportunities, with Low, Medium, and High frequency options. It says it aims to place ads at natural breakpoints. | It can reduce the need to time breaks yourself, but viewers may receive ads at different times. It does not promise interruption-free playback. |
YouTube also offers Delay ads in the Live Control Room: it delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. It is a delay, not an off switch—manually placed breaks still display while the control is on. Side-by-side mid-rolls are available on eligible streams; YouTube says they will not show when captions are turned on. YouTube’s live-stream ad settings
How to turn off creator-inserted mid-rolls
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the scheduled or active stream.
- Open the stream’s edit settings and go to its monetization settings.
- Choose Manual for mid-roll ads.
- Do not insert mid-roll breaks. If you want occasional breaks instead, insert them only at a planned pause.
This follows YouTube’s documented live-stream controls. The help page does not specify a separate procedure for streams that replay prerecorded material continuously.

When to use Delay ads instead
If you keep Automatic mode but need to protect a particular moment from an automatic mid-roll, turn on Delay ads before that moment. The control delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. It will not block a manually inserted break, so avoid inserting one during the delay if uninterrupted playback is the priority. YouTube says automatic mid-rolls aim for natural breakpoints, but does not guarantee when any particular viewer will see one. YouTube Help: manage mid-roll ads in live streams
What these controls do—and do not—guarantee
- They govern mid-rolls, not every ad format. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is on for a live stream. Disabling creator-inserted mid-rolls is therefore not the same as making a stream ad-free.
- Viewer experiences can differ. YouTube does not guarantee every viewer receives a mid-roll. Viewers who do not get one continue watching; viewers who do get one return to the stream after the ad ends or they skip it.
- Loop-specific behavior is not documented. YouTube’s live-stream guidance does not explain whether the settings persist across loop boundaries or act differently when a live stream continuously replays prerecorded material.
- External embeds are a narrow exception. YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with autoplay. That condition is specific to that embed behavior, not a general setting for YouTube playback.
These distinctions are documented on YouTube’s live-stream ad settings page and its explanation of how viewers experience live-stream ads.

Monetization and earnings context
To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-stream videos on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player, YouTube says creators need to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube Help: Watch Page Monetization Module
YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn on live automatic mid-rolls. YouTube describes this as an average across 207 countries in January 2024; it is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. Choosing fewer or no mid-rolls may reduce interruptions, while YouTube says Scheduled or Manual settings may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. Optional manual control with Stream Deck
YouTube identifies Elgato Stream Deck, through its YouTube plugin, as one option for inserting ads. It may help trigger a break at a chosen time, but it neither stops ads nor guarantees that an ad will serve. If your aim is to avoid creator-triggered mid-rolls, Manual mode with no breaks is the relevant control.
