Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First find where the sync problem begins; don’t compensate with an arbitrary delay or blame the VPS before testing. Compare a short local recording, any accessible relay output, YouTube’s live playback, and the processed archive. A steady offset may be corrected with a measured source delay. Drift that grows over time calls for investigating clocks and timestamps, not adding one fixed delay.
Identify what is out of sync
A YouTube broadcast can pass through several stages: capture or media source, OBS or an FFmpeg encoder, a VPS relay, YouTube ingest and processing, and finally live playback or the saved archive. The first comparison that fails helps narrow the search. A local recording that is already wrong points earlier in the chain than a recording that is aligned but a YouTube rendition that is not.
Before changing anything, run a short test with a visible clap or another sharp, repeated sound paired with an obvious movement. Save a local recording. Compare it with the YouTube live rendition and, after ending the test, its archive. If you can capture or play the relay output directly, include that comparison too. Listen to the operator’s monitoring audio separately: monitoring delay does not by itself prove that the encoded stream is out of sync.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the intended stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and testing guidance.

Classify the timing problem
Audio and video have a steady offset
If the mismatch is about the same from the start to the end of a test, measure it. Determine whether audio leads or trails video and by how much. Then apply a matching delay to the relevant source—audio Sync Delay or video Render Delay, depending on which signal needs to wait—and repeat the same test. OBS community guidance recommends comparing separated audio and video in a recording before choosing a correction; treat this as a diagnostic approach, not a guaranteed official procedure. There is no universal delay value for a VPS-to-YouTube setup.
The mismatch grows over time
A constant delay only moves the starting point; it cannot correct a timing rate that diverges. Compare a short and a longer recording, and locate where the drift first appears: local recording, relay output, monitoring path, YouTube live playback, or archive. Inspect timestamp handling and clock consistency among capture sources. OBS’s source API documentation describes audio synchronization to asynchronous video using mutual timestamps and documents a source audio sync offset in nanoseconds. That is an API description, not a recommended value to enter or a guarantee that every external capture chain has aligned timestamps. See the OBS Source API Reference.

An OBS forum discussion describes a possible audio-monitoring buffer or clock issue, but that is a hypothesis to test for the specific system—not a general explanation for encoded-stream drift. Validate monitoring against a recording or remote playback before changing the production output.
Only the operator’s monitoring sounds delayed
Test the encoded result independently. Compare a local recording and a remote stream rather than using the monitoring path as the only evidence. A monitoring-only delay can mislead an operator into changing a stream that is actually aligned.

OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames indicate a connection problem distinct from a measured audio/video offset. OBS says they occur when the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering video bitrate, using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, and trying a different server or service. That 75% is an OBS connection-troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a YouTube bitrate target or a sync correction. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
Make a controlled correction in OBS
- Record the baseline. Note the OBS version, operating system, input devices, output mode, source list, relevant audio and video delay settings, and the time when the problem occurs. Save a local recording and, if available, a relay capture.
- Measure the mismatch. Use the clap or repeated sound and visible movement to establish which signal leads and estimate the offset. Compare separated audio and video tracks in the recording if available. Do not guess a delay based on how the monitoring path sounds.
- Change only the implicated source. Apply a measured audio Sync Delay or video Render Delay to the source that needs to wait. OBS interface labels and layout can vary by version; confirm the setting belongs to the relevant source rather than adding delays at several points in the chain.
- Repeat the same test. Keep the test content and comparison stages consistent. Test long enough to determine whether the offset stays steady or accumulates, and write down each change. If drift remains progressive, undo guessed fixed offsets and continue investigating timestamps, clocks, and the stage where drift first appears.
Inspect an FFmpeg relay and YouTube’s endpoint
Check the relay without using it as a blind correction
If the VPS relay output is accessible, compare it with the source recording and destination playback. For an FFmpeg-based relay, inspect input and output stream timestamps. FFplay’s statistics can expose audio/video synchronization drift; its documentation also describes choosing an audio, video, or external master clock, primarily as a debugging option. Use those diagnostics to observe the problem, not to switch clocks blindly as a production fix. See FFplay documentation.

Use YouTube Live Control Room during a realistic test
Review stream-health messages while sending representative movement and sound. YouTube’s Live Control Room can detect encoder resolution and frame rate, so do not assume a manual resolution setting is needed unless the stream key is configured that way. If the local recording and relay output are aligned but YouTube live playback or the archive differs, preserve the comparisons and logs; the available evidence does not establish a single internal YouTube processing cause for an individual discrepancy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Adding arbitrary delay: Measure a stable offset first. A guessed correction can make the stream worse, and a constant delay will not stop cumulative drift.
- Stacking delays at multiple stages: Keep one controlled change at a time so the next comparison identifies which setting mattered.
- Changing VPS providers immediately: First establish whether the mismatch is present before the VPS, introduced by the relay, or only present at a destination endpoint. The evidence here does not support changing hosts as a general sync remedy.
- Treating dropped frames as lip-sync proof: Investigate bitrate and connection stability separately from a stable audio/video offset.
- Assuming YouTube is at fault from one endpoint comparison: A 2017 OBS forum report described an in-sync local recording and local Nginx RTMP viewing but varying YouTube live or saved output, including reported worsening over about an hour. It was one user’s report, without synchronized captures or verified root cause, and does not show that YouTube generally causes sync problems.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose a live camera or capture pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
