Set the action separately for battery and plugged-in use. On a Mac, the documented closed-lid setup is for use with an external display and requires power, an external keyboard, and a mouse; simply changing a sleep setting is not guaranteed to override lid behavior on every Mac.
Windows: change what closing the lid does
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- Choose an action that does not put the laptop to sleep for On battery and Plugged in. Set each separately; for example, you can keep the stream running while plugged in but allow sleep on battery.
- Select Save changes, then test the stream with the lid closed under the power condition you intend to use.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. The available choices can depend on the PC and its manufacturer. See Microsoft’s instructions for shutdown, sleep, and hibernate settings.

Windows 11 sleep timers are separate
To adjust when the display turns off or the PC sleeps after inactivity, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. These timeout controls are distinct from the action assigned to closing the lid, so changing a timeout alone may not stop the laptop sleeping when you close it. Mac: understand the closed-lid limitation
Apple’s documented closed-display setup for a Mac laptop is for use with an external display. Connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. This is Apple’s guidance for the external-display setup, not a guarantee that every Mac will continue audio or video playback with its lid shut in other configurations. Check Apple’s external-display guidance for applicable requirements and troubleshooting.

macOS also documents the battery setting Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. It may be relevant when the Mac is connected to power, but do not assume this option alone overrides closed-lid behavior on every model. Connected devices and other settings can affect sleep and wake behavior. See Apple’s guidance on unexpected Mac sleep and wake.
Check the stream after changing the setting
- Confirm the lid action is set for the power state in use: battery or plugged in.
- Close the lid and verify that both the YouTube stream and its audio continue. A display turning off is not the same as the computer sleeping.
- If the stream still stops, check whether the laptop is sleeping for another reason, such as a separate power setting, and confirm that the streaming app or browser remains active.
- If the lid option is missing or behaves differently, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact laptop and operating-system version. Microsoft notes that available power options vary by PC and manufacturer.
