Hosting OBS on a cloud server protects a YouTube broadcast from a failure of your home computer—but it does not, by itself, keep the stream running if OBS crashes on the server. To recover from that, you need application-level process supervision and a tested reconnect procedure. Cloud VM recovery, OBS recovery and YouTube ingest are separate layers, and none guarantees uninterrupted playback.
What a cloud server does—and what it does not
When OBS runs on a cloud VM, your personal computer and home internet connection are no longer part of the encoder path. If your laptop shuts down while cloud OBS is still running and connected, that local failure need not stop the feed. But if OBS itself exits on the VM, the encoder stops sending video until it starts again and reconnects successfully.

There are three distinct failure layers to plan for:
- Application: OBS crashes or exits. A process supervisor can be configured to restart it, but that is an application-level measure.
- Host: The VM stops or is terminated. A provider’s automatic-restart behavior may address specified host-level events; it does not establish that OBS will restart, restore its scene or reconnect to YouTube.
- Network or ingest: OBS is running but cannot reach YouTube, credentials are wrong, or the event is no longer accepting a feed. Process supervision alone does not resolve these conditions.
Do not treat a cloud server as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. OBS, the VM, its network path, the stream key and YouTube’s event state can each affect continuity.

Set up OBS on a cloud VM for recovery
1. Prepare the server for unattended operation
Install OBS and place the media and other assets it needs on the VM. Configure the environment so OBS can run without an interactive desktop session if the stream must continue unattended. The exact setup depends on the VM operating system and how OBS is launched; the provider’s VM restart setting is not a substitute for configuring and testing the application.
2. Connect OBS to the intended YouTube event
- Open the intended event in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve its current stream key and ingest settings.
- Enter the key in OBS’s stream configuration, using the current values shown for that event rather than an address copied from an old tutorial. YouTube explains that stream keys identify where an encoder sends its feed and allow YouTube to accept it; treat a key like a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Choose a YouTube-supported ingest method. YouTube supports RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP; consult its current RTMPS setup instructions. If you use HLS and need backup ingestion, YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes a backup server URL. A backup ingest address does not restart OBS after a crash.
- Save the OBS configuration and verify that the intended event receives the feed before relying on it unattended.
If a stream key is reset or replaced, update the encoder with the new key. Restrict who can access the key and use YouTube’s controls to reset it if it is compromised.

3. Add application-level process supervision
If OBS must recover after an application crash, configure a process supervisor or equivalent service-management mechanism to detect an exited process and attempt a restart. Define what should happen after repeated failures, retain logs, and arrange an alert or human check. Decide how OBS will recover the correct scene, media and stream configuration after restarting; a process restart does not itself prove that the scene is restored or that YouTube accepts the reconnect.

4. Test the whole recovery path
- Schedule a private or otherwise suitable test event and confirm the feed arrives in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Stop or deliberately terminate the OBS process in a controlled test. Check whether the supervisor detects the exit and starts OBS again.
- Confirm OBS uses the saved scene and current event key, then observe whether YouTube receives the feed and whether viewer playback resumes.
- Check logs and alerts, and document a manual recovery route if any part of the sequence fails.
The cited YouTube and provider guidance does not establish a universal reconnect deadline or guarantee that a restarted encoder will continue the same event. Test the specific configuration you plan to use.
Troubleshoot in failure-layer order
- Check the event and incoming feed. In Live Control Room, determine whether the event is active and receiving a feed. Confirm OBS is configured with the key for that event. YouTube’s stream-settings guide covers keys and live-stream settings.
- Check whether OBS is running on the VM. If the process exited, changing bitrate or server settings will not restart it. Inspect the supervisor’s status and logs, then investigate why it did not restart OBS or why OBS exited again.
- If OBS is running but cannot connect, investigate the connection. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide includes trying another streaming server and reducing video bitrate where appropriate. These steps address connection problems; they do not restart a crashed process.
- Check VM status separately. Determine whether the host is running and review the provider’s relevant restart behavior. Google Cloud documents automatic restart for standard VM instances terminated by Compute Engine, but that behavior alone does not establish application restart or YouTube recovery. - If ingest is the suspected problem, recheck YouTube’s current settings. Confirm the event’s supported ingest configuration and, if applicable, HLS backup-ingestion setup. A backup URL is not an encoder process supervisor.
What changes for a stream hosted in India?
The documented recovery mechanics are not India-specific: the same distinction between an OBS process crash, VM-level restart and YouTube ingest applies. The available official guidance does not establish a best VM size or a total India-specific monthly cost for continuous OBS encoding.

Before choosing a VM, verify that the required instance type is available in the region you want, and check its sustained CPU or GPU performance, outbound data charges and suitability for your actual stream. Google’s Live Stream API documentation lists Mumbai (asia-south1) for a specific H.265 channel use case; that does not show that every VM type or OBS workload is available or appropriate there. A cloud VM removes dependence on a home computer but adds an always-running server and possible outbound-traffic charges. The exact total depends on the provider, region, VM shape, workload and data sent; the official material cited here does not establish a current India-specific estimate. Include monitoring and the time needed to maintain and test the supervisor in your decision.
If you keep OBS on a VM, retain access to YouTube Live Control Room, the scheduled event and the current key so a person can intervene when automation fails. Do not assume a provider-level restart or a backup ingest address covers every failure.
