Its -reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as RTMP output recovery controls. To reduce the chance of a drop—and recover deliberately—configure YouTube’s endpoint correctly, leave upload headroom, monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, and test a restart or separate backup encoder before the event. Recovery may still interrupt viewers; neither FFmpeg nor YouTube promises seamless continuity.
What happens when the network drops?
FFmpeg sends an encoded feed to a YouTube server URL using a stream key. If connectivity fails, the publishing connection can break even if the command was valid and the encoder process remains running. A brief outage does not prove the process must be restarted, but neither does a surviving process prove it re-established the RTMP session.

Keep three outcomes distinct: the FFmpeg process is still running; the RTMP/RTMPS publishing session is connected again; and viewers see uninterrupted playback. The first does not guarantee the second, and the second does not guarantee the third. The official guidance cited here does not define a universal reconnect grace period or promise that an existing live event continues as one uninterrupted session.
Configure YouTube and FFmpeg for the stream
Copy the current server URL and protect the key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the current server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password for the feed, so do not publish it in commands, screenshots, logs, or support posts. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the server URL and key workflow; stream settings cover managing the key.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends the secure extension to RTMP. In Stream settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL; the regular RTMP URL may be displayed by default. Use the exact endpoint and port YouTube assigns. If YouTube reports an SSL error, verify the scheme and host and, where appropriate for that endpoint, use port 443. - Pass the key only in the output configuration, not as a public example. A typical FFmpeg output has the form
ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY". Replace both placeholders locally with the current values from Live Control Room. This illustrates placement only; it is not a complete encoding command or a reconnect guarantee.
Use compatible encoding settings and leave bandwidth margin
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not more than four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed requirements for every source or network. Check the full encoder settings and bitrate guidance for your chosen format.

Measure available upload capacity under the conditions you will stream in, then keep the total streaming bitrate below it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and warns that connectivity disruption could mean a broken stream. Include every simultaneous feed in the total, including a backup encoder if it sends to YouTube at the same time. A command that starts successfully cannot compensate for an uplink that lacks stable capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Why -reconnect is not an RTMP recovery fix
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation places reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry-delay options in the HTTP protocol section. They concern HTTP transfers and inputs; they are not documented as a general RTMP publishing reconnect control. An option valid for an HTTP input may not apply to an RTMP output. Do not blindly add -reconnect 1 and assume the YouTube publishing session will recover. Check the options supported by your actual FFmpeg build and consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Automatic reconnection of an input and recovery of an output are separate problems. Even if an input reconnects, that does not establish that FFmpeg can reopen the YouTube publishing session or that the player will hide the interruption.

Keep the process observable
- Monitor FFmpeg’s logs and exit status, along with stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. An apparently running process may still be disconnected.
- If the process exits or remains disconnected, use an external service manager, watchdog, or operator procedure to restart it. Then check the YouTube preview and actual viewer playback; do not treat a successful process launch as proof of recovery.
- For file or capture-device sources, test the restart behavior for timestamps, audio/video synchronization, and content continuity. Those outcomes depend on the source and implementation; the cited official guidance does not settle them.
- Protect the stream key in logs and monitoring output. Restrict access to any supervisor configuration that contains it.
Test a separate fallback for important events
YouTube recommends testing backup encoder failover. Its guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Test the exact event configuration before relying on it, and observe both Live Control Room health and the player.

A second encoder is not independent if it shares the failed host, uplink, power, or source. Compare recovery plans by whether the encoder survives, whether it can re-establish publishing, how long viewers are interrupted, what failure points are shared, how well the setup can be monitored, and whether the actual YouTube configuration has been tested. Do not promise seamless continuity for either a supervised single encoder or a backup path without deployment-specific evidence.
Test before going live
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, server URL, and key.
- Check that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy status. Confirm the preview and viewer playback, not just FFmpeg’s startup message.
- Simulate the failure you are planning for: interrupt the network, stop the primary encoder, or perform YouTube’s recommended Ethernet-disconnect failover test if a backup encoder is configured.
- Record whether FFmpeg stayed alive, whether publishing reconnected, how long the player was interrupted, and whether audio/video remained synchronized.
- Practice the operator or watchdog recovery procedure. Verify the new preview and playback after restart; update the runbook if the actual result differs from expectations.
Troubleshoot a dropped YouTube stream
