How to Keep a YouTube Radio Livestream Running When the Source URL Changes

A radio source URL and YouTube’s ingest URL or stream key are different. Identify what changed, update the correct field, and test the stream before relying on it.

First identify which URL changed: the radio station’s audio-source address, YouTube’s ingest server URL, or the YouTube stream key. They serve different jobs. Update the changed setting in the right place, verify audio and the YouTube preview, then monitor stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Identify which URL changed

A YouTube radio livestream has an input and a destination. The radio provider’s URL supplies audio to your streaming software. YouTube’s server URL and stream key are the encoder’s destination and credential. A problem with one does not necessarily mean the others changed. YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup guidance describe these as separate settings.

  • Radio audio URL changed: The source no longer plays or the encoder receives no audio. Get the current address from the station or provider and change the input.
  • YouTube stream key changed or was rejected: The encoder cannot authenticate or start sending. Copy the current key from YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  • YouTube server URL changed: The encoder is sending to the wrong ingest destination. Copy the current stream URL from the same YouTube stream settings and replace the encoder’s server field.

Do not paste the radio source address into YouTube’s server field, or the YouTube ingest URL into the radio input. They belong at opposite ends of the streaming chain.

Recover the stream step by step

  1. Check the failing point. Play or monitor the radio source in your software. If it is silent or unavailable, investigate the input address first. If the input plays but YouTube reports an encoder or connection issue, inspect the YouTube destination and the network path.
  2. Get the correct current address. If the station’s audio URL changed, ask the provider for its current stream address and whether it offers a stable URL or playlist. A station may change an endpoint without any automatic way for your software to discover its replacement.
  3. Replace the radio input if necessary. Edit the source in your encoder to use the provider’s current address. Confirm that audio plays in the source or encoder before proceeding.
  4. Refresh YouTube credentials or destination only if needed. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and copy the current stream key or server URL from the stream settings. Update the corresponding field in your encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance directs creators whose third-party encoder key is rejected to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  5. Test and monitor. Check the encoder’s audio and YouTube preview, then monitor YouTube stream health after going live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; its encoder settings guidance covers live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
  6. Separate source faults from delivery faults. If audio plays correctly at the encoder but frames drop or the connection to YouTube disconnects, troubleshoot the computer-to-ingest network path rather than repeatedly changing the radio URL. OBS notes that network problems between the computer and remote ingest server can cause dropped frames and intermittent disconnections in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Using OBS for a radio source

When the radio provider supplies a stream URL

OBS can be part of a setup that takes network media as an input, but support depends on the stream protocol and the installed software. OBS’s SRT guide shows an SRT network stream used as a Media Source with Local File unchecked. That example is specific to SRT; it does not establish that every radio URL or protocol will work in every OBS installation. Confirm the station’s protocol and your software’s support before depending on it.

When a provider changes the URL, replace the old address in the input that feeds OBS or the encoder, then confirm that audio plays. OBS cannot be assumed to find a replacement address by itself. Ask the provider whether it can supply a stable endpoint or a playlist URL if it changes addresses periodically.

When you use files or a maintained playlist

OBS Media Source supports several local audio and video formats, including a Loop setting and “Restart playback when source becomes active.” OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and a loop-playlist control, and requires VLC to be installed. These options can help with local files or a playlist you maintain, but they are not documented as automatic migration for a radio station’s changing external URL. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
