OBS’s automatic reconnect setting can help when the connection drops while OBS is still running. It does not, by itself, restart OBS after the program crashes. If OBS has exited, the encoder has stopped sending video; you must reopen OBS yourself or configure and test a separate watchdog to relaunch it. For a nature sounds stream meant to run unattended, plan for both connection failures and the possibility that the computer or OBS process stops.
First identify what stopped
A stream interruption can have different causes, and the right fix depends on which one occurred. Check OBS itself and YouTube’s Live Control Room rather than assuming every interruption is a crash.
- OBS is still open, but the feed is interrupted: this may be a network or ingest connection problem. OBS’s automatic reconnect is relevant while the program remains running.
- OBS has closed or the computer has restarted: OBS is no longer sending a feed. Reconnect settings cannot be assumed to relaunch the process.
- OBS is open but YouTube rejects the encoder at startup: check that OBS has the correct stream key for the selected YouTube stream, and update the encoder if needed.
These situations can look similar to viewers, but only the first is a connection-recovery problem. The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide describes automatic reconnect among OBS settings; it does not establish automatic process-crash relaunch.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before going live
Save a known-good OBS setup
Save the scene collection and profile used for the nature stream so you can restore the intended layout and output settings after a restart. Check that the audio and video sources are available when OBS opens again—for example, that a local media file is still accessible and that playback behaves as expected. These are operational safeguards, not automatic crash recovery.

Set up reconnect for connection drops
- In OBS, open Settings and inspect Advanced for the automatic reconnect option. Enable and review it for your setup.
- Remember what it is for: helping OBS recover when its connection is interrupted while OBS continues running. It does not reopen a closed OBS process or restart a computer.
For dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, OBS says the network path between the computer and the remote ingest server is usually relevant. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide covers connection troubleshooting and bitrate congestion. Lowering bitrate or using dynamic bitrate may reduce the effect of congestion, but it can reduce quality and does not fix the underlying network problem.
Verify the YouTube stream and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to use.
- Confirm that the stream key selected in YouTube is the one configured in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not reveal it in screenshots, recordings, or logs.
- Review whether YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings are appropriate for the way you start and stop the encoder. YouTube says these settings control whether the encoder can start or stop the stream. See Manage live stream settings.
Auto-start and auto-stop are not substitutes for restarting OBS: they affect the YouTube stream’s behavior when an encoder starts or stops, not whether a crashed OBS process comes back.

Rehearse the recovery, not just the opening
The OBS Project recommends testing the setup before the first live stream, and YouTube recommends testing encoder configuration and monitoring stream health. Before relying on an unattended nature stream, rehearse the failures you need to recover from:
- Interrupt the network briefly and check whether OBS reconnects and the YouTube stream resumes.
- Close OBS manually, reopen it, and verify that the intended scene, media playback, stream key, and YouTube event are correct.
- If you plan to use a watchdog, test its behavior after both an OBS exit and a computer restart. A watchdog that handles only one of those cases does not cover the other.
- Check the public player and Live Control Room after each recovery. An OBS status that says it is streaming does not alone confirm that viewers can see and hear the intended stream.
YouTube’s encoder guidance is available at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Use settings supported by your encoder, network, and selected stream; changing resolution, bitrate, or keyframe settings is not a remedy for an OBS process that has crashed.

What to do when OBS crashes
- Check whether OBS actually exited. If it is still open, treat the issue as a possible connection interruption and use OBS reconnect and network troubleshooting. If it has closed, proceed as a process failure.
- Relaunch OBS. Reopen it manually, or use a separately configured process supervisor or watchdog that you have tested on the computer and operating system in use. The official OBS and YouTube sources cited here do not specify or endorse a particular watchdog or configuration.
- Restore the stream setup. Confirm the intended scene and source playback, then verify the stream key and selected YouTube stream before starting the encoder.
- Check YouTube’s status and the viewer experience. Confirm that the stream is receiving a signal in Live Control Room and that the public player has resumed the right nature video and sound.
If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, its troubleshooting guidance says to check the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder as needed: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Choose a recovery approach for unattended streaming
A manual restart is simplest when someone can respond to an interruption. A watchdog can reduce the need for someone to notice and reopen OBS, but it adds setup and testing, and should not be treated as reliable until you have verified the specific host, OBS configuration, and restart cases you need. If the computer itself loses power or reboots, process relaunch alone may not be enough; a UPS can address some power interruptions but cannot restart a crashed OBS process by itself.

For a nature sounds stream, also check that you have the rights to use the video and audio you upload or play.
