To keep a YouTube livestream going after a video file finishes, make the file repeat in your encoder. In OBS Studio, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop in that source’s properties. For several clips, use a VLC Video source with the clips in its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube continues receiving the encoder’s outgoing feed; the file reaching its last frame does not, by itself, end the broadcast.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Repeat setting |
|---|---|---|
| One video file, repeated | Media Source | Loop |
| Several files in sequence, repeated as a set | VLC Video | Loop Playlist |
OBS documents both repeat options in its Media Sources guide. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS.

Loop one video file in OBS
- Open OBS and select or create the scene you intend to use for the livestream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name if prompted.
- Select the video file in the source properties.
- Turn on Loop, then confirm the properties. The source should return to the beginning when playback reaches the end.
- Check that the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed as intended.
Loop a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source.
- In the scene, add a VLC Video source.
- Add the files you want to play to that source’s playlist in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist and confirm the properties.
- Check that the playlist advances between files and returns to its first file after the last one.
Test the stream before relying on it
Before the public broadcast, start a private or unlisted test stream and watch the Live Control Room preview. Let the video reach its end so you can confirm that it returns to the beginning; also check that audio plays and repeats correctly. YouTube recommends testing the setup, checking the preview, and monitoring audio, video, and stream health during a broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep the looping source active in the scene that OBS is sending.
- Make sure the source does not disappear or become hidden when playback ends.
- Listen for silence, abrupt audio changes, or an unintended gap at the repeat point.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast rather than assuming the preview will remain healthy unattended.
Why the livestream can continue after the file ends
The video file is content inside the encoder; YouTube receives the outgoing feed from the encoder. YouTube’s guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” In other words, a file reaching its final frame is not the same as stopping the encoder feed. The loop setting supplies the next frames so the encoder can keep sending content. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

End the broadcast deliberately
When the event is finished, stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube, following YouTube’s guidance. Do not rely on the video file ending as a signal to end the broadcast: with looping enabled, it is supposed to start again.
Archive-duration limit to keep in mind
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what archive behavior to expect for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived in the same way. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. They are separate settings.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu again.
- The stream ends even though looping is enabled: Check whether OBS stopped sending its encoder feed, the streaming scene changed, or the source was hidden or removed. YouTube ends the stream when the encoder stops sending content.
- The picture repeats but audio does not sound right: Test the full end-to-start transition in a private or unlisted stream, and check the source’s audio and OBS monitoring/mix before going public.
- The archive is missing or unexpected after a long stream: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise the same result above that duration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. The steps are: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans differ by billing length; the same product is included on each. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
