How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Going While Replacing the Source Video

Keep OBS streaming while you replace its media source or advance a playlist. Learn the setup, checks, and limits of changing files during a YouTube live stream.

Keep the encoder running and replace or advance the video source inside it. In OBS, use a Media Source for one local file or a VLC Video source for a prepared playlist. Do not stop OBS’s stream output or end the event in YouTube Live Control Room. This is the sensible way to keep the existing ingest session active, but neither YouTube nor OBS promises that every source change will be gap-free.

How the replacement works

YouTube receives the feed sent by your encoder; the source video is content that the encoder renders into that feed. That distinction matters: change the media source while the encoder continues sending, rather than stopping the feed and starting a new event. YouTube says to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder, and its encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key to connect the encoder to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream guidance and YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Changing a source without stopping the encoder is a practical continuity approach, not an official guarantee of zero dropped frames or uninterrupted audio. The result can depend on the OBS version, source configuration, and how the replacement is made.

Choose how to load the video

Arrangement Use it when What to know
OBS Media Source You are replacing one file at a time. It plays local media files, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. It has loop and “Restart playback when source becomes active” options.
OBS VLC Video You know the sequence of files in advance. It supports a playlist and loop-playlist behavior. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match your OBS installation.

OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide. A capture device is not required for local files; it is relevant if your video is playing from a separate HDMI device instead.

Replace a file without stopping the stream

  1. Set up the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure the event and stream key. Keep the event and ingest settings for the session. Treat the stream key as a credential: enter it only in your encoder’s stream settings.
  2. Prepare the OBS source. In the scene you are streaming, add a Media Source and select the current local file, or add a VLC Video source and build a playlist if you will move through several known files. Check that the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed as intended. OBS’s Sources Guide describes source types.
  3. Start the encoder and confirm the preview. In OBS, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the stream settings, then start streaming. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room and check the preview before taking the event live.
  4. Change the media, not the connection. While OBS is still streaming, select or update the Media Source to use the replacement file, or advance the VLC playlist to its next item. Do not press Stop Streaming in OBS or end the event in Live Control Room. Exact source-edit controls can vary by OBS version and setup.
  5. Check picture and sound immediately. Confirm the new video appears in the Live Control Room preview, listen for the replacement’s audio, and make sure the old source is not still audible underneath. Keep monitoring the outgoing stream as the transition settles.
  6. Rehearse before relying on the change. Try the procedure on an unlisted or test stream. Monitor audio and video, and check that any local recording or archive is intact. YouTube recommends testing and previewing the stream, monitoring quality, and checking the archive in its live-streaming tips.

Settings and checks that matter

  • Keep the same event and ingest session: do not change the stream key or restart the YouTube event just to swap the media file.
  • Control source audio: verify the incoming file has the intended sound and that another active source is not playing over it.
  • Use loop only when appropriate: Media Source offers a loop option; VLC Video offers loop-playlist behavior. Confirm which behavior you need before going live.
  • Watch the actual preview: a source visible in the OBS canvas is not enough; check what YouTube is receiving and monitor it after switching.
  • Follow rights and platform rules: only stream video and audio you have the right to use, and check YouTube’s current live-stream requirements for your account and content.

If the switch goes wrong

Symptom Likely check Recovery
YouTube preview disappears or reports no incoming feed Check whether OBS stopped streaming or the encoder connection was interrupted. Restore the encoder output and confirm the event preview returns. Avoid ending the event unless you intend to finish it.
Old audio continues under the new video The old source may remain active or its audio may still be routed. Mute or deactivate the old source in OBS, then verify the mix in the preview.
Replacement file does not play Check the selected path, file availability, and whether the source is configured for the intended media. Re-select the local file in Media Source or check the item and VLC installation for a VLC Video playlist.
Transition is not seamless A source change is not documented as a guaranteed zero-interruption operation. Rehearse the change, prepare the next file or playlist in advance, and monitor the stream. If continuity is critical, plan for a brief transition rather than assuming none will occur.
