How to Keep a YouTube Live Product Demo Loop Running Overnight with OBS

A practical OBS-to-YouTube checklist for looping a product demo overnight, testing the full stream path and planning for interruptions and replay limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a product demo overnight, prepare a repeatable OBS scene, connect OBS to the correct YouTube encoder stream, and test the full path—including the YouTube preview, stream health, audio, network and any local recording—before leaving it unattended. OBS is only one part of the setup: a sleeping computer, unstable upload connection, scene that fails to reset, or untested backup can still interrupt the broadcast.

Choose what the demo should show

First decide whether the broadcast needs to repeat the same presentation or show a changing, live view of the product. That choice determines which OBS sources belong in the scene and how you should test the return to the beginning.

Demo input Best fit What to check
Prerecorded media A consistent demonstration that should look the same on each cycle. Test the selected source’s repeat behavior and confirm that the transition from the end back to the beginning looks and sounds right. Loop controls depend on the source and OBS setup; verify the current OBS instructions for the source you use.
Live camera or product setup A demonstration that must show the real product or a changing physical setup. Check camera framing, lighting, focus, power and audio for the whole planned run.
Computer capture A software walkthrough or product demonstration performed on a computer. Close unrelated windows, suppress notifications and confirm that the captured application stays in the intended state.
Combined scene A presentation that needs more than one of the above inputs. Check source order, transitions, audio levels and what viewers see if one source disappears.

If identical cycles are essential, do not assume that merely adding a media or capture source makes it repeat. Run a full cycle in a test and watch the restart, including any gap, black frame, dialog box or audio discontinuity.

Create or select the YouTube encoder stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the encoder stream. You can schedule an event or use an existing stream. Review its title, description, visibility and intended audience before sending video. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Use the credentials for the selected event, not a key copied from an unrelated stream. YouTube describes the credential this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private: do not show it in a public scene, screenshot or recording. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose the connection behavior deliberately. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop options. Check their current values and make sure they suit how you intend to start and end the broadcast; do not rely on an assumed default. The same YouTube settings page explains these controls.
  4. Start OBS and check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct event receives the intended picture and audio before making the broadcast public or leaving the setup.

Set quality for the upload connection

Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate should suit both the demonstration and the sustained upstream bandwidth available to the computer. YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings by codec, resolution and frame rate; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Available upload speed can change when other people or devices use the same connection. YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Check the actual upload connection under realistic household or workplace use, not only when the network is idle. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

If the computer and router have Ethernet ports and a wired run is practical, Ethernet is a reasonable way to avoid relying on a Wi-Fi link. It is not a fix for insufficient ISP upload speed, upstream congestion, power loss or encoder misconfiguration, and it does not guarantee continuity.

Run a preflight before leaving OBS unattended

YouTube recommends setting up well ahead of the event, starting the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying local archive files. Use this checklist with a representative test of the actual demo:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Prove the loop: watch the demo return to its opening state. Check the end-to-start transition and confirm there is no unintended pause, dialog or blank screen.
  • Inspect the scene: make sure no desktop notifications, private information or unrelated windows can appear. Confirm that overlays and captures show only what viewers should see.
  • Check all audio: listen at a normal viewer volume, including at the start, end and transition of the cycle. If silence is intentional, verify that it is not a muted or disconnected source.
  • Check the full path: confirm OBS is sending, the correct YouTube event shows the image and sound in preview, and YouTube reports healthy stream status. YouTube’s live stream metrics help explains the available status and metrics.
  • Check the unattended computer: make sure its power settings will not put the computer to sleep or interrupt the network during the planned run. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal OBS or operating-system setting for unattended operation, so verify this on the specific computer.
  • Check recording needs: if you need a local copy, enable the intended recording path and verify that the file exists and is growing during the test. YouTube recommends checking local archive files; a stream preview alone does not prove a local recording is being saved.
  • Check power and network continuity: confirm that the computer and network equipment have power for the full run. A wired connection can reduce dependence on Wi-Fi where practical, but neither it nor a stable-looking short test guarantees an overnight connection.

Do not assume a backup encoder exists

YouTube’s streaming tips suggest testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player switches to a backup encoder. A single OBS computer does not have that redundancy by default. Treat failover as available only if you have configured a separate backup path and tested that viewers actually switch to it.

Plan for the stream’s duration and replay

Duration matters if viewers may arrive late or need to rewind. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; its encoder setup guidance documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not promise full rewind or an automatically available archive if the demo crosses that duration. Check YouTube’s current settings and guidance for the planned event: DVR on live streams and creating a stream with an encoder.

YouTube’s DVR guidance states: “If your live stream becomes very long, your viewers will only be able to rewind up to a limit as DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.” If an uninterrupted demo needs to run beyond that point, decide in advance whether the audience needs rewind and whether you need a separate local recording; verify the available behavior rather than relying on a later archive.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube preview is missing or shows the wrong event. OBS may be using the wrong stream URL or key, or may not be sending. Confirm the selected YouTube event and its stream credentials in OBS, then check that OBS is actively sending and that the matching event is open in Live Control Room.
Video or audio stutters, drops or degrades. The upload link may not sustain the selected bitrate, or available bandwidth may be reduced by other network use. Check YouTube stream health and actual upload conditions; reduce the encoder demand to a setting supported by the connection and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
The demo does not restart cleanly. The source’s repeat behavior may not be configured or may differ from what the scene requires. Test the chosen OBS source’s current loop controls and watch a complete end-to-start transition before relaunching the event.
The computer stops sending while unattended. Sleep, power settings, a restart, power interruption or loss of network can stop the encoder path. Review the specific computer’s power and restart behavior, confirm power and network equipment will remain on, and repeat an unattended-duration test where possible.
Viewers cannot rewind far enough, or no archive is available as expected. The stream may have exceeded the duration for which YouTube documents full DVR or automatic archiving. Check the planned runtime against YouTube’s 12-hour caveat and verify the event’s available playback and recording options.
The primary feed fails and viewers do not switch to a backup. No separate backup encoder path may be configured or the failover has not been tested. Do not assume a single OBS setup provides redundancy. Configure and test a backup path before depending on it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded product demo to keep looping without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera; the stream key still needs to be handled like a password.
