If an OBS playlist stops when one video file is missing, restore the file or remove or replace its broken playlist entry, then test playback past that point before going live again. OBS does not document a setting that guarantees VLC Video will skip missing files automatically. The fix depends on where playback failed: a local playlist problem is different from an OBS encoder or connection problem reaching YouTube.
First, identify where the stream stopped
Check the OBS preview or program and the YouTube Live output at the time the problem occurred. If OBS is still sending the scene but the video is frozen, blank, or absent, start with the local media source and playlist. If OBS output itself stopped reaching YouTube, investigate the encoder or network path separately; changing a local playlist will not repair a failed stream connection.

Choose the right OBS source for the playlist

Repair a missing file in OBS
- Confirm which entry is broken. In the VLC Video source’s properties, inspect the playlist and identify the item at or near the point playback stopped. Check whether the file still exists at the exact path shown and whether it opens outside OBS.
- Restore, remove, or replace it. If the file was moved or renamed, return it to the expected path or update the playlist entry to its current location. If it is gone, remove the stale entry or replace it with a valid file. OBS source code includes checks for missing local paths, but that does not establish that playback automatically skips the entry.
- Check the VLC installation if the source is unavailable. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the Add Source menu, check that both applications are installed and their architectures match.
- Review playback settings. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if sequence matters. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the last item; loop-at-end is not documented as a way to recover from a missing file. Check Visibility Behaviour if the source is hidden during scene changes, since OBS offers choices that can continue, pause, or stop playback while hidden.
- Test the repaired list in the actual scene. Run playback past the formerly missing entry and confirm the next intended video appears. If interruption risk matters, keep a second copy of the source files, for example on separate storage. A backup helps restore a file; it does not make OBS skip a broken playlist entry automatically.
For the relevant controls and their documented purposes, refer to the OBS media sources guide. OBS recognizes missing local paths in its source code, but the code is not a promise of a particular runtime response: OBS source handling.
If the playlist still will not advance
- It repeats one clip instead of moving through the list: check whether the scene uses a Media Source with Loop enabled rather than VLC Video.
- VLC Video is not an available source: install VLC and confirm that its 64-bit or 32-bit architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- A video disappears during a scene change: inspect Visibility Behaviour and choose the continue, pause, or stop behavior appropriate to the scene.
- The OBS preview is correct but YouTube is not receiving the stream: troubleshoot the encoder or network connection separately from the playlist.
- You want a different playlist interface: the community Media Playlist Source plugin is an optional third-party alternative to VLC Video. Its OBS Forums listing and release information differ on minimum OBS version—the listing says 30.0.0, while a release line indicates OBS 31—so check current release notes and compatibility before installing. Do not assume it skips missing files unless that behavior is documented for the exact version you use: OBS Forums plugin resource.
