How to Keep a YouTube Live Playlist Playing After an OBS Reconnect

OBS reconnects the encoder; it does not guarantee playlist-position recovery. Set up VLC Video looping and visibility separately from OBS and YouTube broadcast controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS’s automatic reconnect can restore the encoder’s connection to YouTube, but it does not guarantee that a local media playlist resumes at the same file or timestamp. Keep the two jobs separate: configure an OBS VLC Video source for playlist playback, then configure OBS and YouTube so the broadcast can accept a reconnect.

“Playlist” can also mean a queue on the YouTube watch page. That is different from a playlist of files in OBS, and the available YouTube and OBS documentation does not establish how a watch-page queue behaves after an encoder reconnect.

First identify what you mean by “playlist”

What you mean Where to configure it What the setting controls What it does not establish
A list of local video files in an OBS scene OBS source properties, usually a VLC Video source File order, looping, and playback when the source is hidden Whether a disconnect restores the precise file and playback position. OBS Media Sources
The YouTube broadcast connection OBS output/reconnect settings and the event’s YouTube Live Control Room settings Whether OBS attempts to reconnect and whether encoder actions can start or stop the broadcast The current position of an OBS media source. YouTube Live stream settings
A playlist or queue on the YouTube watch page YouTube’s viewer interface Watch-page playback The reviewed product documentation does not specify its behavior after OBS reconnects. OBS Sources Guide

If your problem is a series of files in OBS, start with the source. If YouTube stops receiving video when OBS disconnects, work through the broadcast settings as well. These are separate states: a healthy encoder connection does not prove that a media source is playing, and a looping source does not restore a broken connection.

Configure an OBS playlist of video files

Use VLC Video for multiple files

  1. In OBS, add or select a VLC Video source in the scene containing the playlist.
  2. Add the media files to that source’s playlist and set their order in its properties.
  3. Install VLC if OBS cannot load the source. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
  4. Leave Loop Playlist on if playback should return to the first file after the last one. OBS documents this option as on by default.
  5. Set Visibility Behaviour to match how the source should behave when its scene or source is not visible. The documented choices include continuing, pausing, or stopping playback.

If switching scenes seems to interrupt a video, check Visibility Behaviour before changing reconnect settings. A source set to pause or stop while hidden can appear to have failed even when YouTube is still receiving the OBS output.

Do not confuse a playlist with a single-file Media Source

A regular OBS Media Source is for an individual media file. Its loop option repeats that file; it is not the same as VLC Video’s playlist loop. The Media Source setting Restart playback when source becomes active concerns what happens when that source becomes active, not what happens when YouTube reconnects. The OBS guide describes these source controls at obsproject.com/kb/media-sources.

After restarting OBS or reactivating a source, check the behavior in your installed OBS version. The official documentation reviewed here does not promise that a reconnect restores the previous playlist item or exact timestamp.

Let OBS reconnect to the YouTube broadcast

  1. Enable OBS automatic reconnect. In OBS, open Settings, then Advanced, and locate the Network section’s automatic reconnect controls. Enable reconnect and review the delay and retry settings shown in your installed version. These govern OBS’s attempts; YouTube’s documentation does not define OBS’s retry timing or guarantee a successful reconnect.
  2. Keep the intended YouTube event available. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that you are using the intended broadcast rather than creating or selecting a different event. YouTube distinguishes sending an encoder feed from the broadcast controls that make the event start or stop. The OBS community’s workflow resource explains that distinction: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
  3. Use the correct stream key. A stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed. YouTube says custom stream keys can be reused; verify that OBS has the key associated with the intended event. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Review Auto-start and Auto-stop. In the event’s Live Control Room settings, understand whether encoder actions are allowed to start or stop the broadcast. If the encoder stopping should not end the event, check Auto-stop before going live. YouTube documents these as controls that let the encoder start or stop streaming; their effect is distinct from OBS’s source playback.
  5. Do not manually end the broadcast if you intend to reconnect OBS to that same event. After reconnecting, check both OBS’s output state and YouTube’s incoming stream or broadcast status.

OBS’s automatic reconnect is an attempt to restore output, not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing or exact source-position recovery. If OBS reconnects but the video is frozen or absent, inspect the VLC source’s playback state and visibility setting separately from YouTube’s connection status.

Troubleshoot by symptom

OBS reconnects, but the playlist is on the wrong file or time

  • Check whether the VLC Video source is still playing and whether the expected item is selected.
  • Check whether the source or its scene became hidden and whether Visibility Behaviour pauses or stops it.
  • Do not assume reconnect preserves an exact timestamp: the cited OBS documentation does not specify that behavior.

The source stops when you change scenes

  • Open the VLC Video source properties and review Visibility Behaviour.
  • Choose continue, pause, or stop according to whether playback should run while the source is hidden.

OBS reports a reconnect, but YouTube does not resume the intended broadcast

  • Confirm OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream key and intended event.
  • Check Auto-start and Auto-stop in the Live Control Room and whether the broadcast was manually ended.
  • Inspect OBS output and YouTube incoming-stream status independently; one does not establish the other.

VLC Video is missing or cannot play files

  • Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • Recheck the playlist entries and source properties in OBS.

Viewers ask to pause or rewind the live video

YouTube DVR is a viewer playback feature: it lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume from where they paused. It does not control an OBS playlist or repair an encoder reconnect. YouTube also cautions that DVR can be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. Details: Turn on DVR on live streams.
