To resume a YouTube loop after OBS closes, you need two separate pieces: a reliable way to relaunch OBS, and a launch option that tells OBS to start streaming. In OBS’s launch settings, --startstreaming starts streaming when the application opens; it does not relaunch OBS by itself. Use an operating-system startup task or process supervisor to reopen OBS, then test whether YouTube continues the broadcast you intend. OBS’s automatic reconnect setting addresses a temporary connection interruption, not a closed OBS process.
What needs to recover when OBS restarts?
There are two different failure cases, and they require different responses:

- The network connection drops while OBS remains open: OBS can attempt to reconnect automatically.
- OBS exits or the computer reboots: something outside OBS must launch the application again. You can configure that launch to begin streaming.
Neither mechanism guarantees that YouTube will preserve the same live broadcast, watch page, archive, or uninterrupted viewer experience after a full OBS restart. YouTube’s encoder settings control how an incoming feed starts or stops a broadcast, but the exact result after a process restart should be tested with your own setup.
Prepare YouTube’s stream settings
Check the stream URL and key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the intended stream. Verify that OBS is set to the correct YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube uses these values to receive the encoder feed; a reusable or custom key is useful when the same key is intended for repeated encoder sessions. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed, then update OBS with the replacement. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Choose auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls determine whether encoder start and stop signals also start or end the broadcast. With auto-start enabled, an arriving encoder feed can start the broadcast; auto-stop can end it when the feed stops. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” If you want to review the stream in Live Control Room before it goes public, or prefer to manage the event manually, choose the settings and workflow accordingly. Test the behavior rather than assuming a restarted encoder will rejoin the same event. The controls are described in YouTube Help.
Configure OBS for recovery
Enable automatic reconnect for connection interruptions
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it.
- Review the retry settings available in your OBS version and save the change.
This is for interruptions between OBS and the streaming server while OBS is running. It is not a watchdog and will not reopen OBS after the application exits. OBS’s overview documentation describes reconnect behavior at OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Arrange for OBS to relaunch and start streaming
- Set up your operating system’s startup task or a process supervisor to launch OBS when the computer starts or when OBS exits unexpectedly. OBS documents automated launch options, but does not act as the supervisor that detects and relaunches a closed process.
- Add the OBS launch parameter
--startstreamingto the launch command or shortcut. OBS documents this option as “Automatically start streaming.” Refer to OBS Project: Launch Parameters. - Confirm the launch configuration opens the intended OBS setup. Check the selected streaming destination and key, scene, and loop media source. If you manage multiple profiles or scene collections, verify that the correct ones load in the recovery path.
- Test by exiting OBS and letting your relaunch mechanism open it again. Observe whether the loop source plays and the stream reaches YouTube as expected.
The exact steps for creating a startup task or supervisor depend on your operating system and how OBS is installed. The essential distinction is stable across setups: the OS or supervisor reopens OBS; --startstreaming asks the newly launched OBS process to start streaming.

Test the full restart before relying on it
- Schedule a private or unlisted test stream and use the intended YouTube stream settings.
- Monitor the stream from a separate device so you can see what viewers would experience.
- While the test is running, close OBS or simulate the specific failure you want to recover from. Confirm the external relaunch mechanism actually starts OBS.
- Check that the correct scene and loop source are loaded, the video continues playing, and sound and picture reach YouTube.
- Check the Live Control Room and the public-facing watch URL. Confirm whether YouTube starts the event automatically, whether the same event remains available, and what viewers see during the gap.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
OBS does not reopen
The relaunch mechanism may not be configured to run at startup or after an unexpected exit, or its launch target may be incorrect. Test the relaunch independently of streaming: make OBS exit, then verify that the OS task or supervisor starts it.
OBS reopens but does not stream
Check that the launch command includes --startstreaming and that the intended stream destination and key are loaded. If YouTube requires a manual start under your chosen settings, use the Live Control Room workflow you selected and verify it during a test.

OBS streams, but the loop video does not resume
Check that OBS opens the intended scene and that the media source is present and playing. The official quick-start guide confirms that video can be used as a source, but does not establish persistence or restart behavior for every loop-source configuration. The stream drops even though OBS remains open
Use OBS automatic reconnect for transient interruptions, then investigate the connection if the drops continue. OBS lists unstable network paths, bitrate limits, VPN or security software, and faulty network hardware among possible causes. The YouTube watch page or event changes after restart
Do not assume a full OBS restart preserves the same event or viewer continuity. Check the auto-start and auto-stop choices, then test the exact sequence in a private or unlisted broadcast. If keeping the same event or watch URL is essential, confirm that outcome before using the configuration for a public continuous stream.
