Why the stream stops when the playlist ends
A creator-side live stream needs a continuing feed from an encoder or hosted streaming workflow. If the source playlist reaches its last video and stops, the encoder may have nothing more to send. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s help page describes connecting an encoder with the Live server URL and stream key, but does not explain how to make every third-party media source repeat. First, distinguish a viewer loop from a live-source loop
YouTube player loop
YouTube’s embedded-player documentation describes looping a single video by setting loop=1 and setting the playlist parameter to that same video’s ID. That changes playback in the player; it is not a source playlist for your encoder and does not ensure that your live broadcast keeps receiving video. Creator-side source loop
For a live rerun, configure the media source or playlist in the broadcasting workflow that feeds the encoder to repeat. The setting’s name and location depend on the software or service. Find its current loop or repeat instructions, then check what happens after the final item: does playback restart at the first video, pause, or stop sending? YouTube’s stream controls cannot replenish an ended source playlist.

Keep the rerun going with a local encoder
- Check the videos and rights. Make sure the rerun files are available to your chosen source workflow and that you have the rights needed to broadcast their video and audio. YouTube specifically cautions creators to ensure trailer audio and video do not infringe others’ content; this is a rights reminder, not a complete legal analysis. - Set the source playlist to repeat. In your media source or broadcasting software, enable its loop/repeat option for the playlist or source. The exact control varies by product; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify third-party source settings.
- Test the final-item transition. Run a short test through the end of the playlist and confirm that playback returns to the beginning while the encoder continues sending video. Do not rely on a player loop as a substitute.
- Create or reuse the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room and connect your encoder using the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the information that lets the encoder send the feed to the correct destination. - Review auto-start and auto-stop separately. These stream settings govern starting and stopping behavior; they do not make an empty source playlist repeat. Confirm the settings suit your workflow before the rerun.
- Keep the local source operating. With this approach, the computer, encoder software, power, and internet connection that provide the feed need to remain available for the duration of the broadcast.
When a hosted playlist-to-live service makes sense
A hosted workflow can supply a playlist to a YouTube live stream without relying on a continuously running local source. Restream documents creating and streaming a playlist of videos, but that page alone does not establish automatic looping, uninterrupted uptime, specific plan availability, or service limits. Before depending on any provider for a long rerun, confirm its current end-of-playlist behavior, terms, limits, and how you control the YouTube destination. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is archive guidance, not a promise that a stream will restart after its source playlist ends. Troubleshooting an exhausted rerun playlist
- The stream ends at the last video: The source workflow may stop at the end of the playlist. Enable repeat in the source software or service and test the transition before scheduling a long rerun.
- The video loops for viewers, but the live feed still ends: A YouTube player loop affects playback in a player, not the creator’s encoder source. Configure repeat where the source playlist is supplied.
- YouTube shows the stream as stopped: Check whether the encoder is still sending content and whether its source has ended. The stream key and auto-start/auto-stop settings manage connection and lifecycle behavior; they do not create more source video.
- A hosted playlist does not resume after the last item: Verify that provider’s current loop behavior and service terms directly. The existence of playlist streaming alone does not establish automatic repeat or uptime guarantees.
Before scheduling a long gaming rerun
- Confirm that each video and its audio are cleared for broadcast.
- Verify that the playlist repeats at its final item and that the feed continues.
- Confirm the YouTube encoder connection uses the intended stream URL and key.
- Check the provider’s current limits and end-of-playlist behavior if using a hosted workflow.
- Remember that YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold is about archiving ended streams, not restarting them.
