A file protect ring is a removable physical ring fitted to a magnetic tape reel. Its position tells a compatible tape drive whether writing is permitted, helping prevent recorded data from being overwritten or erased accidentally. The term refers to tape hardware—not a file-system permission or a modern digital security setting.
How does a file protect ring work?
The reel has a groove for the ring, and the drive detects whether the ring is in place. In one design described in the Control Data Institute’s 1983 Magnetic Storage Concepts: Supplementary Reference Manual, a spring-loaded pin reaches into the groove and operates a microswitch connected to the drive’s read/write logic. With the ring removed, that drive disallows writing.

The exact installed-versus-removed convention is not universal. The IBM 3420 subsystem description says its write-enable ring must be present for writing; a reel without one is file-protected. The practical point is the same: the ring’s state controls whether the drive allows writes.
Does removing the ring prevent reading?
Not in the Control Data design described above: its manual says the ring’s presence or absence does not affect reading. That statement documents that design, rather than establishing behavior for every tape drive.

What else is it called?
Related terms include file-protection ring, write-enable ring, write ring, and safety ring. TERMIUM Plus records these as standardized terms, and NIST lists “file protect ring” as a synonym for “file-protection ring.”
Are file protect rings a standard size?
No universal size is established by the cited documentation. The Control Data Institute manual gives one historical example: a circular plastic ring approximately 0.25 inches thick and 4.25 inches in diameter. Those measurements describe that example only; check the reel format and drive compatibility before seeking a replacement.
