How to Keep a Scheduled YouTube Live Stream Private Until It Starts

Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, set Visibility to Private, and verify it before starting. Private is different from Unlisted, where anyone with the link can watch.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep an encoder-based YouTube Live event private until its scheduled start, schedule it in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and explicitly set its visibility to Private. Before the event, verify the saved visibility and check the encoder preview separately. Private restricts viewing to you and people you specifically select; Unlisted is not private in that sense because anyone with the link can watch and reshare it.

Set the scheduled live stream to Private

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Create a new scheduled stream or reuse settings, then edit its details.
  3. Set Visibility to Private and save.
  4. Reopen the stream details in Live Control Room and confirm the saved visibility is still Private. Do this before sharing the event or starting the encoder; YouTube notes that visibility defaults can differ by account age, so do not assume the default is private. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance describes the available visibility choices and scheduled streams.

The stream’s visibility setting and the encoder preview are separate checks. A preview confirms the incoming feed; it does not establish that the event is private.

Prepare the encoder without starting the event publicly

  1. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it is the credential that lets the encoder send its feed to YouTube.
  2. Allow time for setup. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the picture and audio are as intended. Verify the event’s visibility is still Private before the scheduled start. YouTube’s live-stream tips cover encoder preparation and preview checks.
  4. At the event start, if the intention is for everyone to watch, change the live stream’s visibility to Public in Live Control Room and verify the current event state there. YouTube documents the available visibility controls, but its cited guidance does not detail every interface transition for this prerecorded encoder workflow, so follow the current Studio prompts rather than assuming a particular transition.

Private, Unlisted, and Public are different

Visibility Who can watch What it means before the event
Private You and people you specifically select. Use this when access must be limited to chosen viewers. Private videos do not appear in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab.
Unlisted Anyone with the link. Not suitable for limiting access to selected people: viewers can watch and reshare the link.
Public Anyone. The event is available to everyone and may appear in YouTube search and channel surfaces.

These distinctions are described in YouTube’s privacy settings guidance. If a scheduled event is private, do not assume how it will appear to non-invited viewers or whether they will receive reminders: the cited guidance does not specify that behavior. Verify the event state in Studio.

A scheduled video is not a scheduled live stream

If you only want an uploaded prerecorded video to become public at a chosen date and time, schedule the video’s publication instead. You can schedule a private upload to become public at a specified time zone and date; that is a normal video release, not an encoder-based live broadcast. YouTube notes that the displayed watch-page date for a public video is based on Pacific Standard Time, so account for that when targeting a displayed publication date. See YouTube’s scheduled publishing instructions.

For a live event, create a scheduled stream in Live Control Room and manage the live stream’s own visibility. The official guidance cited here does not establish a native workflow that turns an uploaded file directly into a scheduled encoder-based live broadcast without an encoder.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • The event is not private: Open the scheduled stream’s details in Live Control Room, set Visibility to Private, save, and verify the saved value. Do not rely on the account’s default.
  • You chose Unlisted to hide the event: Change it to Private if only you and selected people should be able to watch. Anyone who gets an Unlisted link can watch and reshare it.
  • The encoder preview looks correct, but access is wrong: Check visibility separately. Preview validates the feed, not the audience restriction.
  • You scheduled an upload instead of a live event: A scheduled video becomes public as a video; it is not an encoder-based live broadcast. Choose the workflow that matches the intended viewing experience.
  • You cannot find the expected visibility or event behavior: Check the current stream details and prompts in Live Control Room. YouTube’s cited help explains the choices but does not specify every transition or the presentation of private scheduled events to non-invited viewers.

Equipment and a cloud option

The privacy setting does not require special hardware. YouTube discusses software and hardware encoders as ways to stream, with professional hardware suggested for higher-production events; the cited guidance does not provide a comparative price or suitability test. If your goal is instead to keep prerecorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
