To keep a Raspberry Pi FFmpeg stream online through a power cut, put every device in its local power-and-upload chain on backup: the Pi, its proper power supply, and any router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT) that loses power. Backing up only the Pi may keep FFmpeg running while the internet connection disappears. Even a complete local backup cannot prevent an outage in the ISP or upstream network.
What must stay powered for the stream to continue?
The stream depends on more than the computer running FFmpeg. The Pi needs stable power, and the router, modem and ONT must also remain on if they lose mains power during an outage. The broadband path must remain available beyond your home as well; a UPS cannot protect against an ISP or upstream-network failure.

- Raspberry Pi: power it through a suitable supply for the exact model, with allowance for cable loss and attached peripherals.
- Network equipment: include each router, modem or ONT the connection requires and that would otherwise shut down.
- Internet service: local backup does not guarantee that the ISP remains available.
- Streaming process: FFmpeg must continue running or be relaunched if it exits, and the stream must be checked in YouTube Live Control Room.
Raspberry Pi Ltd. recommends a 5 V, 5 A supply for Raspberry Pi 5; using a 3 A supply limits available current for peripherals. For Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, the recommended supply is 5 V, 3 A. These are supply recommendations, not measurements of typical power draw or promises of battery runtime. Pi 3 and earlier models have different connectors and requirements. Choose backup power for the complete load
First identify the Pi model, its power-supply requirement and the equipment that must remain on. Then estimate or measure the combined load and decide how long you want the setup to bridge an outage. A UPS’s actual runtime varies with its battery, conversion losses, condition and connected devices. VA is a sizing specification, not a guarantee of hours; there is no single runtime that can be promised for an unspecified Pi-and-network setup.

- List the devices: include the Pi and the broadband equipment required to upload the stream.
- Check compatibility: confirm the UPS or battery backup provides the Pi’s required voltage and current, uses a compatible connector and supports the load while on battery. Account for peripherals and possible cable voltage loss.
- Check the network devices: verify that the backup can power the router, modem or ONT too, using their own voltage, current and connector requirements.
- Compare runtime claims carefully: use figures stated at a load comparable to your setup. A rating in VA alone does not establish how many hours your stream will last.
- Test the assembled system: run the Pi and all required network equipment on battery under realistic streaming conditions. Record how long they remain powered and whether the upload link stays available.
A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT may suit board-level backup, but it does not automatically back up a separate router, modem or ONT. A UPS designed to power the Pi and network equipment together may address more of the local chain. No particular UPS model or runtime has been validated here; check model compatibility and load-specific runtime before buying.
Make the YouTube stream resilient before an outage
Backup power does not increase your internet connection’s upload capacity. Choose encoder quality to fit the upload you can actually sustain, including under realistic conditions, and test the stream before relying on it during an outage. YouTube advises choosing a quality that works reliably with the available connection, testing with audio and motion similar to the real event, and monitoring stream health. - Measure available upload capacity in conditions representative of the stream.
- Choose a conservative resolution and bitrate that fit that connection rather than assuming battery backup solves bandwidth limits.
- Test with representative video motion and audio; check the incoming stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Use RTMPS as YouTube recommends, and verify that the configured stream key and publishing destination are correct.
Handle FFmpeg restarts and YouTube recovery as separate checks
A process supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits, but restarting the process is not proof that YouTube has received a healthy stream again. FFmpeg supports RTMP and RTMPS; its protocol documentation describes RTMP as a streaming protocol over TCP/IP. Some reconnect options documented for HTTP apply to HTTP and are not a general promise that an RTMP publishing session to YouTube will resume automatically. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

- Test a brief, controlled interruption to power or network before relying on the setup.
- Confirm that the process restarts or reconnects as expected.
- Separately confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the incoming stream is healthy.
A UPS will not correct an unavailable ISP, an invalid stream key, encoder settings that exceed the available upload, or an FFmpeg input that fails to recover. Keep an operator check in your plan for those cases.

Troubleshoot common failures
