For ordinary interactions, use a Puppeteer Locator: actions such as click() bring the target into the viewport and wait for it to be ready. If scrolling itself is the goal, call ElementHandle.scrollIntoView(), then use isIntersectingViewport() to check whether it intersects the viewport.
Choose the method for what you need to do
- Interact with the element: use a Locator action such as
click(),hover()orfill(). Locators are Puppeteer’s recommended way to select and interact with elements, and their actions handle viewport readiness. - Scroll without interacting: use
ElementHandle.scrollIntoView(). - Assert viewport intersection: use
ElementHandle.isIntersectingViewport()and choose a threshold that matches your requirement.
See the Puppeteer Page interactions guide for Locator behavior.

Scroll a selected element into view
Use an ElementHandle when you explicitly want to scroll a selected element, rather than perform an action on it:

if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await element.scrollIntoView();
waitForSelector() can return no handle if the target is not found, so the check makes that failure explicit. The ElementHandle.scrollIntoView() API uses the automation protocol client or the element’s own scrollIntoView method to bring it into view.

Check whether the element intersects the viewport
After scrolling, call isIntersectingViewport(). Its threshold ranges from 0 to 1, and defaults to 1; use a lower value when partial visibility is enough.
const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target');
if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await element.scrollIntoView();
const partiallyVisible = await element.isIntersectingViewport({threshold: 0.1});
if (!partiallyVisible) throw new Error('Target did not intersect the viewport');
The method returns a boolean. A threshold of 0.1 asks for some intersection rather than the default full intersection. Consult the ElementHandle.isIntersectingViewport() API for the parameter details.

When a Locator or page click is enough
If clicking is the only goal, you do not need a separate scroll call. A Locator click ensures the element is in the viewport and waits for relevant conditions such as visibility, enabled state and a stable bounding box. The page-level page.click(selector) also scrolls an out-of-view match into view before clicking its center. Use a Locator for new interaction code; reserve explicit scrolling for cases where scrolling is itself required.

The Puppeteer Screenshots guide says that ElementHandle.screenshot() tries to scroll a hidden element into view by default.
Set the viewport when layout dimensions matter
For reproducible page layout, configure the viewport before navigation where possible:
await page.setViewport({width: 1280, height: 800, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
Choose dimensions appropriate to the layout you need to test. Puppeteer’s Page.setViewport() API notes that changing the viewport resizes the page, and some mobile or touch-related viewport changes may reload it. Setting it before navigation avoids relying on a post-load resize for a page whose layout depends on its initial dimensions.

Limits and troubleshooting
- The selector was not found: check the selector and whether the page has loaded the relevant content. Handle a missing result from
waitForSelector()before calling methods on it. - The element intersects but is still hard to use: intersection only establishes viewport overlap. It does not guarantee that a sticky header or other overlay is not covering the element. Check the rendered page when unobscured access matters.
- The page uses a nested scrolling layout: the documented APIs do not promise that every application-specific scrolling arrangement will behave as intended. Inspect the actual result rather than treating a successful call as proof that the element is usable.
- A viewport change alters or reloads the page: set the desired viewport before navigation, especially when testing mobile or touch configurations.
- The element moves during an action: Locator actions wait for applicable stable-bounding-box conditions; for explicit scroll-and-check flows, run the intersection check after scrolling and validate animations or page-specific layout if the result is inconsistent.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than browser automation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
