Keep your PS5 Slim in an open, well-ventilated spot, leave at least 10 cm of free space around it, and keep dust clear of its vents. Sony does not say that vertical or horizontal placement cools better; choose the position that leaves the air paths unobstructed and use the correct feet or stand.
Where should you place a PS5 Slim?
Sony advises leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console and keeping the side and rear vents unobstructed. This is placement guidance, not a measured cooling result. See Sony’s PS5: Console is making noise support page.

- Put the console in an open area rather than a cramped space where heat can build up.
- Do not block the vents with nearby objects, cloth, or other coverings.
- Avoid placing it on long-fibre rugs or carpets, where airflow can be restricted and dust can collect.
- Avoid a closed TV cabinet. Sony safety guidance warns against using the console in closed cabinets or other heat-trapping locations.
Sony’s general PS5 safety guidance specifies at least 10 cm (4 in) from a wall surface. That is consistent with the support page’s 10 cm clearance guidance, not a separate cooling-performance measurement. See the PS5 CFI-12XX safety guide.

Is vertical or horizontal placement cooler?
The consulted Sony instructions do not claim that either orientation cools better. Base your choice on which position gives the console clear airflow and stable support.

Sony’s setup page for the PS5 CFI-2000 model group (Slim) says, “Always attach the feet to your PS5 console before use.” Its getting started with your new PS5 console instructions explain the horizontal feet and vertical stand.
How do you clean dust from PS5 Slim vents?
- Turn off and unplug the console. Disconnect the AC power cable before cleaning.
- Let it cool. Wait before handling the console or removing its covers.
- Vacuum around the vents gently. Sony recommends a low-powered vacuum to remove accumulated dust around and in the vents. Use low suction; do not push objects into openings.
- Clean beneath covers only as documented. Sony’s safety guidance describes removing covers to vacuum dust trapped underneath. Follow the model-specific cover-removal instructions and do not disassemble the console beyond this user-accessible cleaning.
- Reassemble and reconnect. Make sure the covers and required feet or stand are correctly in place before using the console again.
Sony’s vent and fan-noise guidance and PS5 safety guidance describe unplugging and low-powered vacuum cleaning. A low-powered vacuum is optional; Sony does not endorse a particular model.

Is a louder PS5 Slim fan a sign of overheating?
Not necessarily. Sony says the fan may temporarily run louder during some games and applications. Check that the vents are clear, the console has the recommended open space, and dust has not accumulated. If fan noise remains concerning after those checks, Sony directs owners to contact PlayStation Support.

The cited Sony guidance establishes no cooling benefit or compatibility for generic cooling stands, clip-on fans, replacement covers, or vent covers. Do not assume an accessory will lower temperatures. The vertical stand has a specific purpose: supporting vertical placement of the Slim, not serving as a cooling upgrade.
