How to Keep a Prerecorded Church Service Stream Running on YouTube with systemd

A practical guide to sending a prerecorded church service to YouTube with FFmpeg and systemd, including RTMPS, secret handling, restart limits, testing and troubleshooting.

Use a foreground FFmpeg process managed by systemd, with Restart=on-failure, a protected YouTube stream key, and a person checking YouTube’s preview and stream health. systemd can restart a failed encoder process; it cannot confirm that YouTube resumed the broadcast or that viewers can hear and see it. The example below is a starting structure, not a tested, copy-and-paste service: adapt it to your Linux, systemd and FFmpeg versions, media file, and YouTube stream.

What this setup can—and cannot—do

FFmpeg reads a prerecorded service and sends it to YouTube’s live ingestion endpoint. systemd supervises FFmpeg and can start it at boot and restart it after qualifying failures. That helps recover from some process exits, but it is not end-to-end broadcast monitoring: an active systemd unit does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that the event is visible to the congregation.

This approach requires a Linux host that stays powered on, a network connection with enough upload capacity, a readable video file, compatible FFmpeg, and someone who can monitor the YouTube event. The exact command and unit depend on those details. No reliability percentage or uninterrupted-service guarantee follows from using systemd.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and secure endpoint

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast. You can schedule it in advance.
  2. Open the stream settings and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. For encrypted transport, choose the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than assuming an endpoint copied from another setup. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say to provide that URL and the key to the encoder; troubleshooting includes checking port 443.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put it in a world-readable unit file, shell history, logs, or a public support post. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the service.

FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection; see its protocol documentation. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported ingestion protocols in its encoder settings guidance.

Check the file, encoder and stream settings

Confirm the host can read and send the media

  • Use the actual FFmpeg executable path on the host and verify that the service account can read the source file and access its working directory.
  • Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the intended input, codecs and RTMPS output. Test the command interactively before placing it in a unit.
  • Choose output resolution and frame rate to suit the source video and available upload bandwidth. Do not choose a bitrate without knowing both.

Match YouTube’s encoder recommendations

YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Select settings appropriate to the source and connection, test with representative motion and audio, and monitor stream health. A single bitrate or resolution is not right for every church’s file and network.

Build and test the FFmpeg command

Construct an FFmpeg command that reads the actual service recording, applies compatible audio/video settings if needed, and sends output to YouTube’s RTMPS URL with the stream key. FFmpeg options depend on the file, codecs, installed build, and chosen output settings, so there is no safe universal command to paste here. Test it in the foreground first: confirm the file opens, the encoder starts, and YouTube’s Live Control Room shows incoming video and audio. Avoid exposing the key in terminal history or process/log output; use an appropriate protected credential mechanism for the production service.

Create a systemd service

The following is a structural example only, not a tested drop-in. Replace the placeholders with locally verified values. The encoder must stay in the foreground so systemd supervises the actual long-running process.

Protect the stream key

Do not replace the placeholder with a key in a broadly readable unit file. systemd’s execution manual warns that environment variables are unsuitable for secrets and documents credential mechanisms including LoadCredential=, LoadCredentialEncrypted=, and SetCredentialEncrypted=. Availability and details vary by systemd release; check the installed version’s documentation and use a supported method. Ensure your FFmpeg invocation can consume the credential without printing it.

Enable, start and inspect the unit

Save the unit under a suitable system service name, then use the matching unit name in these commands:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now church-stream.service
systemctl status church-stream.service
journalctl -u church-stream.service

Check the executable path, permissions, file path, network connectivity and logs when startup fails. Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target order startup around the system’s network-online target; they do not guarantee a working route to YouTube.

Understand restart behavior and limits

Restart=on-failure is generally appropriate for a long-running service: systemd restarts it after qualifying failures, with the configured delay. It does not restart every possible exit, diagnose why an output is unhealthy, or verify YouTube’s broadcast state. Repeated failures can hit systemd’s start-rate limit, after which automatic retries stop until the underlying issue is addressed and the service is reset or started again according to the system’s policy. See systemd.service(5) for restart and rate-limit behavior.

Do not use Restart=always casually for a finite recording: a clean FFmpeg exit can mean the input ended normally, and an always-restart policy may start it again. An intentional service stop and a process exit are also different cases. Choose the policy based on the intended broadcast duration and test its behavior.

Run a rehearsal and monitor the service

  1. Test well before the service is needed, using the intended file, host, encoder settings and network.
  2. Start the encoder before the event. In Live Control Room, inspect the incoming preview and confirm audio and video are present and stream health is acceptable.
  3. Confirm the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and check it from relevant viewer devices. YouTube recommends advance setup, a pre-event start and ongoing stream-quality monitoring in its live streaming tips.
  4. During the service, watch both the YouTube event and the host. A running unit is only one signal; check for frozen video, missing audio, dropped ingestion or an inaccessible event.
  5. When the event has ended, follow the YouTube wrap-up workflow and stop the encoder. Do not leave a finite recording to loop or restart unless that is the intended broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Unit fails immediately: Check systemctl status and journalctl -u church-stream.service for an incorrect FFmpeg path, invalid options, missing file, or permission problem. Verify paths and access as the configured service user.
  • FFmpeg cannot connect: Recheck the RTMPS URL and key from the selected YouTube event, confirm network access and the required outbound route, and check port 443 when troubleshooting RTMPS. Do not substitute an assumed endpoint.
  • Service restarts repeatedly: Find and fix the triggering error before retrying. Repeated attempts can reach systemd’s start-rate limit; restarting again without correcting the cause may only repeat the failure.
  • systemd says active, but the event is missing or unhealthy: Inspect Live Control Room’s preview and health, then check that the right broadcast and key are in use and that audio/video are arriving. Process status is not a viewer-side check.
  • Video works but audio is absent or unsuitable: Inspect the source audio and FFmpeg’s audio mapping/encoding, then rehearse again with representative service content. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 among its audio options.
  • Stream quality is unstable: Reassess resolution, frame rate and bitrate against source characteristics and available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) and CBR guidance, then test and monitor rather than assuming a setting fixes every connection.
  • Key may have leaked: Replace it in YouTube’s stream settings, update the protected credential used by the service, and verify the new key in a controlled test.

Review copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Before broadcasting a prerecorded service, confirm that the church has the rights needed for every included element—such as music, performances, readings, slides, and video—and that the planned use complies with YouTube’s policies. Permission to use a song in an in-person service does not by itself establish permission to stream or archive it. Check the current YouTube rules and any relevant rights-holder terms for your situation; this setup guide cannot determine a particular church’s rights. Also review the broadcast’s audience, visibility and scheduled-event settings in Live Control Room before sharing the link.

Or let it run in the cloud
