To reuse a YouTube stream key for recurring podcast broadcasts, create or select a custom key in YouTube Studio and save it in your encoder. The key lets the encoder connect to YouTube; it does not keep a broadcast live by itself. For each scheduled episode, you still need to send the encoder feed and start the event in Live Control Room.
What “active” means for a YouTube stream key
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a video feed to YouTube. You can reuse a custom key for future encoder sessions, but a saved key is not an ongoing broadcast: each live event must be created or scheduled, the encoder must send its feed, and the event must be started in Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions explain how to create and reset keys, but do not promise that every key remains active indefinitely or specify a universal inactivity-expiration period. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Choose a workflow for recurring podcast episodes
| Workflow | Use it when | What carries over |
|---|---|---|
| Custom reusable stream key | You want your encoder to keep using the same credential for recurring sessions. | The selected key is reusable. You still create or schedule each event and start it separately. |
| Reuse settings | You are creating a new episode event with similar setup to a previous stream. | YouTube’s Reuse settings workflow carries over the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key. |
Use a separate scheduled event when each episode needs its own watch page and audience reminders. Reusing settings can save setup work, but it does not make the previous broadcast continue.
Set up a reusable key and start an episode
- Check that live streaming is available. In YouTube Studio, choose Create / Go Live. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s getting-started guidance lists channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days among its requirements. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming and YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open the Stream tab. In YouTube Studio’s live control workflow, create a first stream if needed; otherwise, prior settings may load, including the key.
- Create or select the custom key. Under Select stream key, create a custom stream key and choose it for the stream. Save it securely; treat it as a password because it authorizes the encoder feed.
- Schedule the episode or reuse a previous setup. Use Manage and Schedule stream for a new event and watch page. Choose Reuse settings when the prior event’s metadata, stream settings, and key should carry forward.
- Configure the encoder. Choose YouTube as the destination if the encoder supports it. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and paste the stream key into its key field. Start the encoder so it sends the podcast feed.
- Start the scheduled event. Wait for the feed preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. The reusable key alone does not start the event.
- End the episode cleanly. Click End Stream in the applicable Studio workflow and stop sending the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not mean a stream should be left running between episodes.
Keep the key secure and recover from problems
- If the key may have been exposed: reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in every encoder using it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset the key. The old key will no longer be the one to use.
- If the encoder reports an authentication or connection error: check the current key in Studio, confirm the encoder has the correct key and stream URL, and verify that the intended event is selected. Do not assume an inactivity timeout; YouTube’s cited guidance does not state a universal key expiration interval.
- If the encoder is sending but the event is not live: check the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live for the scheduled stream.
- If live streaming is unavailable: check channel verification and any live-streaming restriction, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- If an old episode’s details appear on a new event: review the carried-over metadata and settings before publishing; create a fresh event instead of using Reuse settings if you need different details.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded podcast video live on YouTube continuously rather than simply reuse an encoder key, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
