To connect a YouTube channel to Switchboard Live, first enable live streaming on that YouTube channel. Then, in Switchboard on a desktop, open the relevant Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > YouTube, authorize the Google account with access to the channel, and add the channel to the group. When broadcasting, send your encoder feed to Switchboard, confirm the preview and green receiving indicator, then select the YouTube destination and click Go Live.
Before you connect: enable YouTube live streaming
YouTube live streaming must be enabled on the channel before Switchboard can authorize it as a destination. Switchboard’s Connecting YouTube to Switchboard Connect guide states: “Before you can authenticate your YouTube destinations, you must enable live streaming on your channel.”
If the channel is not enabled yet, follow Switchboard’s activation guidance: verify the channel by phone and wait for YouTube to activate live streaming. The Switchboard Help Center article, updated April 24, 2025, says activation can take up to 24 hours; this is Switchboard’s operational estimate, not a guaranteed YouTube service-level commitment.
Connect and authorize your YouTube channel
- Sign in to Switchboard on a desktop. Open the Stream Group that will carry the broadcast. If you are creating a group, continue to the destination-connection stage in its setup.
- Open destination options. In the group, click Add Destinations, then Connect More.
- Choose YouTube. Select the Google/YouTube account that owns the channel or has access to it. If multiple channels are available under that login, carefully choose the intended channel.
- Authorize access. Click Continue and complete the authorization flow. Close the success screen when it appears. To add another channel accessible through the same Google login, repeat the authorization steps and select that channel.
- Attach the channel to this Stream Group. Find the authorized channel in the group’s destination list, turn on its toggle, and submit the change. Authorization makes a destination available to Switchboard; enabling its toggle adds it to the group you plan to use.
Send the feed and go live
Connecting the YouTube destination and sending video into Switchboard are separate parts of the workflow. Your encoder or compatible streaming application sends video to Switchboard; Switchboard then forwards it to the selected destination.

- Start the encoder feed to the Switchboard workflow for the correct Stream Group.
- Check Switchboard’s confidence monitor for the incoming video and confirm the receiving indicator is green.
- Select the connected YouTube destination and click Go Live when you are ready to broadcast.
Switchboard’s initial setup guide describes the Stream Group, encoder input, and test workflow. Its FAQ names compatible application examples including OBS, Ecamm Live, Switcher Studio, and StreamYard; the connection steps do not require a specific hardware encoder model.
For a scheduled YouTube event: use Custom RTMP instead
If you need an event-specific destination rather than reusable channel authorization, Switchboard documents a Custom RTMP route. This is an alternative for a scheduled YouTube event, not a required step for ordinary channel connection.

- In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key.
- In the relevant Switchboard Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > Custom RTMP.
- Enter the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key in their corresponding fields, then give the destination a recognizable name.
- Start the encoder feed to Switchboard, select the Custom RTMP destination, and go live when ready.
Switchboard’s scheduled YouTube event guide describes this route. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, text, or other public material.

If the channel does not appear or video does not reach YouTube
- YouTube is missing from authorization: Confirm that live streaming is enabled on the channel. If you just completed activation, allow for the period Switchboard describes, which can be up to 24 hours.
- The wrong channel appears: Check which Google account you selected and whether it owns or can access the intended channel. Repeat authorization and choose the correct channel if needed.
- The channel is connected but unavailable in the group: Open the intended Stream Group, use Add Destinations, find the channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change.
- YouTube shows no incoming picture after the encoder starts: Check the two links separately. First confirm that video appears in Switchboard’s confidence monitor and that the receiving indicator is green; then confirm that the intended YouTube destination is selected before pressing Go Live.
These checks address the setup issues covered by Switchboard’s guides; they do not identify a single cause for every authorization or delivery failure.
