How to Keep a Large LEGO Set Intact During a Move

Photograph your LEGO build, remove fragile details, and cushion it so it cannot slide or flex. For delicate models, move stable sections separately.

To give a large LEGO model its best chance of arriving assembled, stop it from sliding, avoid pressure on fragile details, and remove pieces likely to snag or flex. Photograph the build first, pack any detached parts with the set, and use a padded box or tote sized to leave room for cushioning. No packing method can guarantee an intact arrival; for a delicate or unstable model, moving it in modules or partially disassembled is the safer choice.

Choose whether to move it assembled

There are two reasonable approaches: keep a sturdy model assembled and secure it against movement, or remove vulnerable sections before packing. The right choice depends on the model and the handling it will face; there is no controlled comparison establishing that one approach always works best.

  • Check stability: Notice whether the structure twists, flexes, or sheds pieces when handled gently.
  • Look for vulnerable details: Tall, thin, loose, or projecting elements are more likely to catch on packing material or be damaged if a section flexes.
  • Consider the move: Carrying distance, stairs, vehicle space, and how much the container may shift are practical factors, though the available guidance does not quantify their effects.
  • Weigh rebuild time: If you remove sections, consider whether you have time and access to instructions to restore them.

For a spindly or fragile build, detach the most vulnerable parts and consider removing any larger section that can be carried as a stable module. If the model is sturdy and needs to remain assembled, focus on preventing it from sliding without pressing on delicate features. These are risk-reduction choices, not guarantees. See the Brick Fanatics guide to transporting LEGO sets and Rebrickable’s advice on moving a LEGO collection.

Pack the model step by step

  1. Photograph the build. Take several angles, including close-ups of details that would be hard to reconstruct. The photos give you a reference if pieces shift or come off.
  2. Remove snag-prone pieces. Detach fragile, loose, or projecting elements. If a larger section comes off cleanly and remains stable on its own, pack it separately rather than letting it flex against the main build.
  3. Bag and identify loose parts. Put removed pieces in resealable bags, label each bag with the set or module, and keep them in the same container as the model when practical.
  4. Select a roomy container. Use a box or lidded tote that leaves space for cushioning around the model. One moving guide recommends 2–3 inches of space around a set; treat that as a practical suggestion from that guide, not a universal requirement.
  5. Cushion to prevent sliding. Fill gaps with cushioning or packing paper so the build cannot shift freely. Do not pack so tightly that the material presses on fragile details or forces the structure to flex.
  6. Wrap gently if useful. Stretch wrap can help stabilize an assembled model, but use gentle tension. It is not a substitute for cushioning against impact, and tight wrapping can put stress on the build. See Moving.com’s LEGO packing guidance.
  7. Label the container. Mark it so you can identify the model and handle it carefully. Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight and heat while packed.

Protect LEGO from heat and moisture

The LEGO Group recommends keeping bricks dry and away from heat and direct sunlight. Its storage guidance says temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. Avoid leaving the packed model in a hot vehicle or other place where temperatures may exceed that level.

Why glue is not a good way to secure a build

Glue may seem like a way to stop pieces coming apart, but the LEGO Group says it does not think using any type of glue on LEGO bricks is a good idea. Its official guidance on gluing bricks explains that glue can change brick shape and interfere with reusing the pieces. For a move, use careful packing and separate fragile sections instead.

What to expect on arrival

Unpack the model over a clear surface, keeping its labeled bags nearby. Compare it with your photos, then reattach removed parts and check for pieces that may have shifted. No cited source establishes a damage rate for LEGO sets during moves or proves that a particular packing method will ensure an intact arrival, so plan for some restoration even with careful packing.
