Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore a home camera goes online, secure its account and your Wi-Fi, install updates, decide what it should record, and limit who can view or change its settings. Privacy also depends on where the camera points and what happens to its video and audio, so check the controls in the specific camera app rather than assuming every model works the same way.
Before you install: check the camera’s data and security features
Before buying or setting up a camera, find out what it sends, where live video and saved clips are stored, and which security controls are available. Look for documented encryption for account information, live streams, and stored recordings; two-factor authentication; the ability to disable remote viewing; and options to give household members different permissions. The Federal Trade Commission’s camera guidance recommends researching security features and asking the manufacturer when encryption details are unclear.

Neither “local” nor “cloud” recording is automatically more private in every respect. Check the particular camera’s data path, whether viewing and stored clips are protected, and what account or sharing controls apply. For example, Apple says HomeKit camera streams are encrypted between the camera and Apple devices, and describes HomeKit Secure Video as designed to let users process and view clips without exposing video content to Apple or a third party. That description applies to Apple’s system, not to cameras generally (Apple’s HomeKit camera security explanation).
Choose a field of view that captures only what you need
Position the camera to cover its intended area without unnecessarily recording private spaces. Avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, and other areas where people expect privacy unless there is a compelling need and everyone affected understands the setup. The FTC specifically cautions consumers to consider privacy when a remote camera can show a private area such as a bedroom.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Before turning on recording, check whether the view also includes a neighbor’s property, a shared hallway, visitors, or workers. Rules can vary by location, particularly for audio recording and biometric identification. The sources cited here do not establish one legal rule for every jurisdiction, so check the requirements that apply where you live.
Secure the camera account
- Replace default credentials. Change any default username or password. Choose a strong password you do not reuse on other accounts.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. Enable it for the camera account or its associated cloud account if the service offers it.
- Limit administrator access. Give settings-changing privileges only to people who need them. Use narrower viewing permissions for other users when the camera supports them.
The FTC recommends strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication for connected devices and accounts (camera guidance; connected-device guidance).

Secure Wi-Fi and router settings
- Change the router’s default administration credentials.
- Enable Wi-Fi encryption and keep the router’s software up to date.
- Check whether your router can place cameras on a guest or separate network, apart from computers and printers. This can limit how easily a camera can reach other devices if a device or network is compromised.
Router menus differ: network separation may be offered through a guest-network setting or a VLAN, and not every router supports the same options. Check your current router’s capabilities first; a new router is relevant only if the existing one cannot provide the separation you want. The FTC discusses network separation in its camera security guidance and connected-device guidance.

Update the camera, app, and router
Install available camera firmware and app updates before relying on the camera. Turn on automatic updates if offered; otherwise, check the manufacturer’s support page periodically. Updates can address security bugs as well as other problems. Keep the router’s software current, too.

Support periods are manufacturer- and model-specific. Google says its Nest devices receive automatic security updates for at least five years from the date each device begins sale in the US Google Store. The commitment covers known critical issues that can be resolved through a remote software update; check Google’s current connected-home device list for an individual model. This is a Google policy, not a standard that applies to other camera makers.
Choose what the camera records and retains
In the app, review audio, live streaming, continuous recording, event clips, cloud backup, motion or sound detection, and retention as separate controls. Disable features you do not need, and choose the shortest clip-retention period that still works for your purpose. A camera may let you watch a live feed without saving continuous recordings, or save event clips without enabling every detection feature; confirm the behavior in that model’s settings.

Recording periods and processing depend on the product and service. Google says Nest camera video and audio are processed according to the user’s instructions, configuration, and settings, and that recordings may be kept for the selected subscription period. Its privacy documentation gives examples of 5, 10, 30, or 60 days; these are Google product and subscription examples, not general retention periods for home cameras (Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub).
If the camera provides access logs, review them for unfamiliar IP addresses or access times that do not match normal use. The FTC recommends this check in its connected-device guidance.

Treat face recognition as an optional, sensitive feature
Decide whether familiar-face detection or another biometric feature is needed before enabling it. Check local privacy rules and get a person’s permission before saving face data where required. Google’s familiar-face documentation warns users to consider local laws and consent; it also says availability can depend on location and subscription, and that face-data storage differs between some older models configured in the Nest app and newer models configured in Google Home. Those details describe documented Google products and should not be assumed for other brands (Google’s familiar-face help).
Review household access and physical controls
Remove former household members and devices that no longer need access. Give each person only the permissions they need, and use time-limited access for guests or caretakers if the app offers it. Permission levels vary by camera. Google also notes that someone with physical access to a home may be able to interact with a device’s camera or microphone controls (FTC camera guidance; Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub).
If the camera has a built-in shutter, privacy mode, or power control, use it when recording is not wanted. Do not assume a generic lens cover will fit or leave a camera functioning safely; use a cover only if the manufacturer specifies compatibility.

Rather than relying on a broad “secure camera” label, compare the controls and policies that affect your setup:
- Whether the manufacturer documents encryption for account data, live streams, and stored clips.
- Whether the account supports two-factor authentication and unique user access.
- Whether remote viewing can be disabled and household permissions narrowed.
- Whether camera and app updates are automatic, and what support commitment applies to the specific model.
- Whether recording is local, cloud-based, or both, and what retention settings are available.
- Whether audio recording, face recognition, and other sensitive functions can be disabled.
The FTC identifies encryption, account security, remote-viewing controls, and user permissions as useful checks. Manufacturer documentation matters for model-specific recording, retention, biometric, and update policies.
