Seat the cape correctly, support it with as few sharp folds as possible, and avoid steam, water, pins, glue, or tight clips unless the maker and the fabric-care information specifically allow them.
Because the figure, fabric, dye, trim, and attachment design are unknown, there is no universal wrinkle-removal or anti-slip trick. The procedures below are conservative handling guidance for two different cases: a cape detached for storage and a cape that remains on a displayed figure.

First, identify what the cape and figure allow
Before trying to flatten or secure anything, find the exact figure model and inspect the cape’s construction. Look for a product manual, packaging insert, support-page instructions, or a care label supplied with the accessory. Note the fabric content if it is stated, whether the cape has a lining or printed finish, and how it attaches.
- Check whether the neck is held by a loop, tab, snap, peg, magnet, hook-and-loop section, or another built-in fitting.
- Look for wires, coated edges, metallic trim, glued decorations, painted details, or heat-sensitive parts.
- Photograph the cape’s original position before removing it. This gives you a reference for the intended orientation.
- Inspect the figure for soft vinyl, painted surfaces, or areas that already show discoloration.
Do not assume that advice for an ordinary shirt applies to a collectible accessory. The Federal Trade Commission’s care-label definitions distinguish instructions such as “Steam only,” “No steam,” and “Use press cloth.” Those definitions illustrate why the item’s own directions matter; they do not establish that an unlabelled figure cape can safely be steamed or ironed.

Choose the method based on whether the cape is detached
| Situation | Main objective | Lowest-risk approach | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape detached for storage | Prevent hard creases and unsupported stress | Lay it with minimal folds and pad any necessary folds with acid-free tissue | Whether any heat, moisture, washing, or pressing is permitted |
| Cape fitted on the figure for display | Preserve the intended fit without pulling the neck seam | Check the built-in attachment and arrange the fabric gently | Whether an additional fastener is compatible with the figure or fabric |
| Dark cape touching the figure for long periods | Reduce the chance of dye transfer | Use separate storage or a maker-approved, compatible barrier | Whether a particular barrier material is safe for that figure’s finish |
These are handling priorities, not guarantees. An unidentified cape may react differently from another cape that looks similar.
How to store a detached cape without creating new wrinkles
1. Remove it without stretching the neck area
Support the fabric with one hand while releasing the attachment with the other. Do not pull the cape away from the neck seam, tug on a collar loop, or drag a tab sideways. If the attachment does not release easily, stop and consult the maker’s instructions rather than increasing force.
2. Shape it on a broad, clean surface
Place the cape on a clean, dry surface large enough for it to lie naturally. With clean, dry hands, align the edges and seams as they were designed to sit. Use light fingertip pressure to ease out obvious ripples. The aim is to let the fabric rest in its intended shape, not to stretch it flat.

3. Minimize the number and sharpness of folds
The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends storing small flat textiles with as few folds as possible. Applied conservatively to a modern figure cape, that means using a broad loose fold only when a flat position is impractical. Avoid narrow accordion folds, hard creases over trim, and folding directly across the neck attachment.
4. Pad unavoidable folds
If the storage space requires a fold, place a small amount of acid-free tissue in the fold so the bend remains broad rather than sharply pressed. The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies acid-free tissue as a suitable padding material in textile storage guidance. This is a protective storage aid, not a method for forcing wrinkles out while the cape is on the figure.
5. Keep the fabric supported
Do not leave a detached cape hanging from one corner or compressed beneath heavy objects. Unsupported weight can distort a small accessory or stress its trim. A shallow box or drawer that lets the cape rest without pressure is preferable to a crowded compartment where other parts repeatedly press against it.

6. Separate dark fabric when transfer is a concern
If the cape is dark and will remain in contact with the figure during storage, consider storing the pieces separately. Good Smile Company’s customer-support guidance, updated May 31, 2024, warns: “Color transfer from dark-colored fabric outfits to figures may occur due to long time usage, friction, high temperature and humidity.” The same guidance suggests inserting vinyl between the figure and cloth or keeping the parts separate. Treat that as manufacturer guidance for figures with cloth parts, not as proof that every vinyl sheet is compatible with every painted or soft-plastic surface; confirm compatibility for your model before inserting any barrier.

How to make a cape look orderly while it is on the figure
1. Check the attachment before touching the fabric
Remove dust and examine the attachment point in good light. A cape that appears to slip may simply be seated one loop, tab, or peg away from its intended position. Compare both sides with the reference photograph or the maker’s assembly diagram.
2. Seat the attachment without pulling
Hold the figure securely and guide the built-in attachment into place. Work close to the attachment rather than pulling the lower edge of the cape. If the neck seam begins to stretch, the fabric bunches around a tab, or the fitting resists, stop. Repeated force can damage a seam even when the cape looks stronger than it is.
3. Arrange the lower panels gently
Once the attachment is seated, let the cape fall naturally. Use your fingertips to separate overlapping panels and ease out small ripples. Do not pull opposite corners to create tension, because tension can make the cape look flat temporarily while distorting the cut or stressing the collar.
4. Allow time for the fabric to settle
After arranging it, leave the figure undisturbed and check the cape again later. A loose accessory may shift because of its design, the figure’s pose, or the attachment’s limited support. If it repeatedly moves, document the position and contact the maker rather than improvising a fastener.
Steam, ironing, and moisture: when they are permissible
Do not treat a clothes steamer as automatically safe for a figure cape. Conair’s generic garment-steamer instructions tell users to consult the garment’s own care directions; they cannot establish a safe temperature, distance, moisture level, or exposure time for an unknown cape, its dye, trim, adhesive, or stitching.

Use heat only when both sources of information permit it
Proceed only if the figure maker’s instructions and the cape’s own fabric-care information explicitly allow the proposed treatment. If either source says “No steam,” forbids heat, or gives no usable permission, do not steam or iron the accessory.
Keep the figure away from heat and moisture
If treatment is explicitly approved, remove the cape from the figure whenever the instructions allow removal. Do not direct hot vapor at a painted figure, soft vinyl, printed surface, glued trim, or attachment point. Moisture and heat can create risks that a garment-care instruction for the fabric alone does not address.
Test cautiously before treating the visible area
Follow the maker’s specified settings and method, and test in a concealed area only if the instructions permit testing. Look for dye change, water marks, sheen change, loosening trim, or a change in the fabric’s shape. A successful test on one section does not prove that every panel or decoration will respond identically.
Never substitute an iron, hair dryer, boiling water, or improvised heated object when the maker has not approved it. The available guidance does not support an unconditional wrinkle-removal procedure for an unidentified figure cape.
What to do when the cape keeps slipping
Start with the least invasive checks
- Confirm that the figure is assembled according to the maker’s instructions.
- Check that the cape is facing the correct direction and that both sides of the attachment are fully seated.
- Look for a trapped fold, twisted loop, or trim caught under the attachment.
- Reposition the figure on a stable display surface and observe whether the pose itself is pulling the cape to one side.
- Photograph the problem and compare it with official product images or assembly diagrams.
Do not add an unapproved fastener
There is no source-verified pin, adhesive, magnet, clip, or tight clamp that is safe and effective for every unspecified figure cape. A pin can puncture fabric or the figure; adhesive can leave residue or pull paint; a tight clip can mark the cloth or crush a seam. Even a seemingly gentle fastener may react with dye, coating, or soft plastic over time.
If the built-in attachment is damaged, missing, or clearly inadequate, ask the manufacturer or an experienced conservator for a model-specific solution. Keep the cape detached and supported rather than forcing a temporary attachment that may cause permanent damage.

Color-transfer risk deserves separate attention
Wrinkles are visible, but dye transfer can permanently change a figure’s surface. Good Smile Company attributes transfer from dark fabric outfits to prolonged use, friction, high temperature, and humidity. The risk is therefore not limited to a cape that feels wet or visibly rubs during installation; long, close contact can matter as well.

- Reduce rubbing when putting the cape on or taking it off.
- Keep the figure and cape separate during long-term storage if the fabric is dark or the figure has a light finish.
- If using a vinyl barrier suggested by a maker, verify that the barrier is compatible with the specific figure’s surface and does not trap heat or moisture.
A barrier is not a universal cure. It should never replace checking the maker’s precautions or monitoring the figure.
Cleaning and washing: why ordinary clothing advice can mislead
Do not wash a figure cape simply because a similar-looking garment can be laundered. Small accessories may combine fabrics, dyes, glued trim, printed graphics, wire, or non-washable attachments. Without an explicit maker instruction, water and detergent introduce unknown risks such as bleeding, shrinkage, distortion, or weakened adhesive.
The Canadian Conservation Institute’s textile guidance emphasizes careful handling and cautions against using household appliances for delicate historic textiles. That guidance is not a direct washing instruction for a modern toy accessory, but it supports the conservative choice: avoid home washing, tumble drying, and unapproved cleaning until the maker identifies a safe method.
If the maker does approve cleaning, follow that instruction exactly and keep the cape away from the figure until it is fully dry. If no instruction exists, remove loose dust gently and seek model-specific advice rather than experimenting on the visible side.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely concern | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp crease after storage | The cape was folded tightly or pressed under weight | Re-shape it on a broad surface and use acid-free tissue to pad a necessary loose fold; do not add heat without explicit permission |
| Cape slides to one side | Attachment may be mis-seated, twisted, or overloaded by the pose | Recheck the built-in fitting and arrange the fabric gently; stop if the neck seam is pulled |
| Wrinkle remains after handling | The fabric or finish may require a model-specific treatment | Check maker and care instructions; do not escalate to steam, ironing, or washing by guesswork |
| Dark mark appears on the figure | Possible dye transfer from prolonged contact, friction, heat, or humidity | Separate the parts, document the area, and follow the maker’s transfer precautions |
| Trim lifts or the fabric changes sheen | Heat, moisture, pressure, or adhesive may be affecting the finish | Stop treatment and keep the cape detached; contact the maker for next steps |
| Attachment will not release | Force could damage a loop, tab, peg, or seam | Stop pulling and consult the model’s assembly instructions or support channel |
A repeatable care routine for display and storage
- Keep the maker’s instructions and a reference photograph with the figure.
- Before display, inspect the attachment and seat it without pulling the neck seam.
- Arrange the cape with light fingertip pressure and avoid stretching the lower edge.
- During long-term storage, minimize folds and pad unavoidable folds with acid-free tissue.
- For dark capes, monitor contact areas and separate the cloth from the figure when appropriate.
- Do not introduce steam, water, heat, pins, adhesives, or clips unless the specific maker and care information approve them.
- If a problem persists, preserve the cape in a supported position and request model-specific guidance instead of escalating force.
Limits of generic advice
The correct treatment depends on facts that are not available for an unspecified figure: the maker, edition, fiber content, dye system, trim, attachment design, and care instructions. General conservation guidance can justify minimizing folds and supporting the textile, but it cannot certify a particular temperature, solvent, barrier, or anti-slip device.
That uncertainty is useful information. When the instructions are missing, the most defensible choice is reversible handling: gentle positioning for display, supported low-fold storage when detached, and separation from a figure when dark fabric may remain in prolonged contact. Anything more aggressive should wait for model-specific approval.
