Keep your mini PC’s intake and exhaust vents clear, place it in open, well-ventilated air, and clean it only as its manufacturer permits. If it still runs hot or makes unusual fan noise, use settings and troubleshooting steps approved for that exact model rather than copying another mini PC’s BIOS values.
Start with airflow and placement
Move the PC out of enclosed or crowded spaces. Check that its vents are not covered by objects, pressed against a wall, or clogged with dust and lint. Identify where your particular model draws air and exhausts it; vent locations differ, so a stand or external fan is not automatically helpful.

Work out what is happening
Heat, noise, and slow performance can have several causes. Intel lists reduced reported CPU frequency, throttling, system slowness, shutdowns, and excessive fan noise as possible overheating symptoms. These are clues to investigate, not proof that overheating is the only cause. A new grinding, ticking, squealing, or rattling sound may point to an obstructed or damaged fan.

Before reducing performance, check whether an application is keeping the processor busy. On systems that expose the controls, both BIOS power-management options and operating-system power settings can affect behavior. The choices and their effects depend on the model; Intel’s NUC power guidance explains the NUC-specific options: Intel NUC power and performance settings.
Clean accessible vents and cooling parts safely
Inspect the vents and accessible fan area for dust or lint, then follow the maintenance instructions for your exact mini PC. Intel recommends cleaning fans and intake and exhaust vents when dusty; its NUC fan-noise guidance specifically recommends compressed air for radiators and checking for physical damage: Intel NUC fan-noise troubleshooting.

Do not assume that every model should be opened or that internal parts can be removed by the owner. Access, cleaning methods, and warranty procedures vary. If the manual does not describe a safe way to reach a component, ask the manufacturer rather than improvising.

If the manufacturer provides fan presets, use a supported setting and weigh noise against cooling. ASUS’s NUC Aptio V guidance describes Cool as cooler but slightly louder, Balanced as a compromise, and Quiet as quieter but slightly warmer. These are examples for the documented NUC context, not defaults or guaranteed options on other mini PCs. ASUS notes that long file transfers, stress tests, benchmarking, or sustained processor use can call for different fan behavior. Its guidance says sustained processor usage of 75% or higher for a long period may warrant different settings; that is model-context guidance, not a universal overheating test: ASUS NUC fan control guidance.

Intel’s NUC power guidance describes BIOS power states such as Balanced, Low-Power, and Max-Performance, with availability varying by model. It says sustained Package Power Limit 1 (PL1) should be set at the processor’s TDP and must not exceed the cooling solution’s limits. Treat this as configuration guidance, not a measured temperature or a value to copy from another PC. The processor and system implementation both matter.
There is no universal temperature or noise threshold established for all compact mini PCs. Check the thermal specifications for your processor and system rather than relying on a single temperature number found online. A cooling preset can reduce temperature or sustain performance at the cost of more fan noise; a quiet preset can reduce noise while allowing the system to run warmer.

Reset or update BIOS only by the maker’s procedure
For the Intel NUC over-temperature warning, Intel recommends loading BIOS defaults, trying supported Balanced or Cool fan controls, and updating to the latest BIOS for that NUC. Before resetting, record custom settings you may need to restore. Use the device maker’s instructions for your model and BIOS version; do not apply a NUC procedure to an unrelated mini PC.

Contact the computer maker if overheating continues after the model’s supported steps, the fan does not operate, or you find physical damage or persistent abnormal fan noise. Intel’s processor troubleshooting advice is intended for build-your-own systems and directs owners of OEM computers to their system manufacturer: Intel processor overheating troubleshooting.

Intel says Intel processors have built-in thermal protection that shuts down the processor if it gets too hot. That statement applies to Intel processors; it does not establish that every mini PC uses the same protection behavior or shutdown policy. A shutdown or continuing fault still warrants model-specific troubleshooting.
