Keep OBS streaming and switch scenes inside OBS. A scene change alters the picture OBS sends; stopping OBS’s stream or ending the YouTube broadcast stops the feed. You generally do not need a new YouTube event or stream key just to switch from a camera to lyrics or another prepared scene. Rehearse the change with your church’s actual setup: the scene-control guidance is practical operating advice based on how an encoder sends a feed to YouTube, not a documented guarantee for every OBS configuration.
Change the scene without ending the stream
YouTube receives the feed from OBS, which is acting as the encoder. The event’s stream URL and key connect that encoder to YouTube. While OBS continues sending the feed, selecting another prepared scene changes what is composed into that feed; it does not, by itself, call for a new event or key.

- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select or schedule the intended live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it lets an encoder send content to your event.
- Connect OBS to the event. Configure OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, then start streaming early. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check that the expected video and audio appear.
- Keep OBS streaming. During the service, leave the OBS streaming session active. Use OBS’s scene controls to switch among the scenes you prepared, such as a camera, lyrics, a welcome slide, or a holding screen.
- Monitor the viewer-facing result. If possible, have one person operate OBS and another watch the YouTube preview or player. Confirm that the picture changes as intended and that audio remains present during transitions.
- End the broadcast when the service is over. Use the end-stream procedure for your setup, then stop sending the encoder feed. The exact button sequence depends on how the event and OBS are configured, so confirm it in rehearsal rather than relying on a generic sequence.
A scene switch is different from stopping the encoder. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube when you only mean to change the shot or graphic.
Rehearse the service’s scene changes
Build a transition plan
List the scenes the service will use and the order they appear in: for example, a holding slide before the service, the speaker or worship camera, lyrics, and a closing slide. Confirm that the right sources are present in each scene and that the planned transitions make sense to the operator.

Test the whole path to YouTube
Run the rehearsal through the actual OBS computer, network, YouTube event, and player where practical. Switch through each scene while someone checks the YouTube preview or player, not just the OBS canvas. Check both image and sound: a scene can look right locally while the viewer-facing feed has a problem.
Start early and keep watch
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Before the service, check the preview, confirm the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages, test mobile access, and monitor audio and video. During the broadcast, have someone watch for interruptions and scene or sound problems.

Keep the stream reliable
Allow upload-bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. Network interruptions can disrupt a stream, so consider the connection available to the encoder during the service, not only its advertised speed. If using a configured backup encoder, YouTube advises accounting for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20% headroom.

A backup encoder is an optional reliability measure, not a requirement for every church. If your setup has a backup path, test it before relying on it: YouTube’s guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. That advice applies only when a backup encoder and failover path are configured; it does not mean every stream will recover automatically.

Know what happens to the archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If the service may run longer, do not assume that automatic archive behavior applies.
Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS will not connect or YouTube preview does not appear: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the selected event. If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its guidance is to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The stream freezes or viewers lose access: Check the encoder computer’s outbound connection and available upload bandwidth. Network disruptions can break the stream; reduce competing network use or address the connection issue, then verify the viewer-facing player. If a backup encoder is configured, test the failover path separately.
- A scene change shows black video or missing sound: Check that the intended scene and its sources are active, then inspect the YouTube preview or player while switching. Test every scene and monitor audio and video in rehearsal; the correct fix depends on the source or configuration at fault.
- The broadcast ends when the operator tries to change scenes: Check whether OBS’s streaming session was stopped or the YouTube event was ended. For an ordinary scene change, keep the encoder session active and select the next scene in OBS.
