Use tmux if you want to disconnect and later reconnect to watch or interact with your screenshot job. For a noninteractive batch, run it with nohup, explicit log and input redirection, and &. On a Linux machine with systemd, systemd-run can launch it as a transient service. These methods protect a process from terminal closure; they do not automatically recover a crashed job or keep it running through a machine shutdown or reboot.
Choose how you want to manage the job

Closing a terminal is not the same as shutting down the computer. The commands below address terminal or session disconnection while the host remains available. If the machine powers off, these methods alone do not preserve an active process.

Run a batch with nohup and a log
From the directory containing your script, use this generic Unix-like shell pattern, changing the script and log paths as needed:

nohup ./bulk-screenshots.sh > screenshots.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &
echo $!nohupmakes the command ignore hangup signals. GNU documents it as a way to let a command continue after logout;nohupdoes not put the command in the background by itself. The trailing&does that. See the GNU Coreutils nohup documentation.> screenshots.log 2>&1sends standard output and standard error to the same log file.< /dev/nulldisconnects standard input from the terminal, which is appropriate for a noninteractive script.$!prints the process ID of the most recently backgrounded command in that shell. Record it if you want to check the process later.
After launch, inspect screenshots.log for progress and errors, and check the process state with the tools available on your host. If the script expects keyboard input, do not use this pattern as-is; use tmux instead.

Use tmux when you want to reconnect
- Start a named session:
tmux new -s screenshots. - Run the batch inside that session:
./bulk-screenshots.sh. - Detach without ending the job by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. The key binding may differ if you have customized tmux. - Close the terminal or disconnect from SSH. Later, reconnect to the host and run
tmux attach -t screenshots.
The tmux project describes programs inside a session as detachable from the outside terminal and reattachable from the same or another terminal. See tmux Getting Started. Detaching is different from exiting the shell running the script: leave the session intact if you want to reattach to it.
Start a transient systemd service on Linux
If systemd is available on the host, a basic invocation is:

systemd-run --unit=bulk-screenshots --working-directory="$PWD" ./bulk-screenshots.shThis asks systemd to start a transient unit named bulk-screenshots using the current directory as its working directory. The systemd-run manual documents transient service execution and asynchronous startup. Check the installed systemd version and its options for your environment; user-manager availability, unit naming and output capture can affect the right invocation. Do not assume this command will resume a failed script or survive reboot with the job’s work intact.

Use predictable output paths
For Playwright, page.screenshot({ path: ... }) saves an image to disk, and fullPage: true requests a full-page capture. A path may be relative to the process working directory, so run the script from a known directory and create unique output names for each URL. See the Playwright Page API.

Your script must still decide how to navigate, when to wait, how to name files, and what to do when a URL fails. If a run must resume after a crash, add application-level checkpoints and retries or use a durable job runner; terminal detachment alone does not supply those features.
Keep visual comparisons reproducible
If you compare screenshots over time, keep the host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless mode consistent where possible. Playwright notes that these factors can change rendering. Its documentation also says a browser can have multiple pages, but that does not establish a safe concurrency level for a particular site or machine. - The job ends when the terminal closes: launching with only
command &is not the same as ignoring hangup signals. Usenohupwith the redirections shown above, or keep it in a detachedtmuxsession. - You cannot watch the job after disconnecting:
nohupis not a reconnectable terminal. Usetmuxwhen you need to return to the same session. - The log is empty or missing: confirm the script started in the intended working directory and that the log path is writable. Check whether the script writes its own progress somewhere other than standard output or standard error.
- The script cannot find its files after launch: use an explicit working directory or absolute paths. A process started from a different directory may resolve relative script inputs and screenshot paths differently.
- A URL fails but the process continues: inspect the script’s error handling and log output. Detachment does not add retries, checkpointing or per-URL recovery.
- The job disappears after a reboot or machine shutdown: these commands do not, by themselves, guarantee restart or restore unfinished work. Configure a suitable supervisor or durable job system and make the application checkpoint its progress if recovery is required.
- systemd-run is unavailable or behaves differently: verify that the host uses systemd, and consult the manual matching its installed version for service mode, manager access and output handling.
