First identify where water appears to be entering; repeated or unexplained flooding needs assessment by a qualified local professional. These steps lower risk, but they cannot guarantee a dry basement in every storm.
Understand your flood risk—and how water might enter
Check local flood-risk information using Ready.gov’s flood guidance, but do not treat a map as a guarantee that your home cannot flood. Ready.gov’s warning is direct: “Where it can rain it can flood.” Flooding can happen outside mapped high-risk areas.

Notice where water shows up during or after rain. Water at a floor drain may point to a different problem than water around a sump pit, a wall-floor joint, a foundation crack, or runoff collecting near the house. These clues can help you describe the problem, but they are not enough to diagnose its cause remotely. If flooding recurs or the entry point is unclear, ask a qualified local professional to assess the property.

Inspect accessible gutters and drains before the rainy season and after weather that leaves a lot of debris. Clear blockages safely; FEMA’s hurricane-preparedness guide advises keeping gutters and drains free of debris, and Ready.gov also recommends decluttering them.
#1 Best Overall
- Efficient Design - This small submersible pump uses a top suction design that eliminates air lock and minimizes clogging from debris at the bottom of the sump pit. Install in about 15 minutes with no need to drill a weep hole.
- Tough And Durable - A corrosion-resistant epoxy coated steel motor housing, stainless steel fasteners a cast-iron volute give this small pump long life in tough sump pump applications
- Quality You Deserve - This corded electric water pump is proudly assembled in the USA and warrantied for 3 years. Its dependable, efficient, ultra-quiet performance provides quality you can trust
- Indoor Use Only - This 1/3 HP WAYNE sump pump supports basement water removal during heavy water flow from rain or snow melting. Model CDU790 can pump up to 4,600 GPH to help keep your basement dry
- Tested Vertical Float Switch - Integrated float switch tested to 1 million cycles for dependable automatic operation
This routine maintenance helps keep drainage pathways clear, but it does not address every route water can take. It will not, by itself, stop sewer backup or seepage through foundation walls or floors.
Prepare an existing sump pump for a power outage
If your basement has a sump pit and pump, consider adding a water alarm and a battery-backup sump pump. FEMA recommends both measures, and Ready.gov advises considering a sump pump with a battery. A water alarm alerts you to rising water; it does not pump water out.

- Efficient Sump Pump: Aquastrong sump pump with 1HP powerful motor. Draining water up to 4500GPH Per Hour( 75 gallons per minute) at 5ft. Lift water up to 30ft of vertical height
- Portable Design: Plug in to play while unplug to stop. Bottom suction design filters debris and removes water down to 1/5 inch from the surface. It can handle up to 1/5″solids , ideal for draining hot tub and flooded basement window wells
- Easy Installation: 1-1/4'' NPT discharge comes with 1-1/2'' elbow adapter and snap coupling adapter of 3/4'', 1'' or 1-1/4'', which makes Submersible pump easy to install. 10ft UL power cord provides safety and convenience
- Safe & Durable: The submersible water pump is made of reinforced engineering thermoplastic casing resists corrosion and abrasion. Quality mechanical seal prevents leakage effectively for long service life. Built-in thermal overload protector will keep the motor from burning out when dry running
- Quality Service: Aquastrong customer service provides professional technical supports, keeps your water system stable and worry-free
Do not assume any backup unit will fit or protect every basement. Ask a qualified installer to check compatibility with your sump pit, discharge route, and home conditions, and follow the equipment maker’s instructions for upkeep. The cited guidance does not establish a universal pump capacity or battery runtime.
Address sewer backup separately
Floodwater can back up into a basement through drains. FEMA guidance describes check valves in plumbing or sewer lines as a way to help prevent that backflow. A check valve addresses water coming through the plumbing path; it does not stop surface runoff or seepage through foundation walls and floors.
Rank #3
- High-Capacity 3/4 HP Motor: Pumps up to 5,490 gallons per hour for reliable basement water removal during heavy storms
- Heavy-Duty Cast Iron & Stainless Steel Construction: Designed for long-lasting durability in tough sump conditions
- Integrated Vertical Float Switch: Provides dependable automatic operation while fitting into narrow sump pits
- Top Suction Anti-Airlock Design: Helps prevent clogging and eliminates the need for a weep hole during installation
- Assembled in the USA with 5-Year Warranty: Built for dependable, ultra-quiet performance
Ask a licensed plumber whether a valve is appropriate for your plumbing and permitted under local requirements. Installation needs to suit the property rather than rely on a one-size-fits-all solution.

Water entering through cracks, floors, or walls is a different problem from drain backup. FEMA CERT flood materials discuss waterproofing basement floors and walls to reduce seepage through cracks and advise consulting building professionals when additional mitigation may be needed. The right approach depends on the source of water and site conditions, so do not assume an interior coating, sealant, or drainage change will solve the problem without an assessment.
Rank #4
- Efficient Draning: This 1/2 HP sump pump can effectively remove up to 3450 gallons of water per hour and lift it to a height of 25 feet. Its powerful yet quiet motor ensures excellent performance, making it ideal for efficiently removing basement sewage, wastewater, and rainwater
- Automatic Operation: Equipped with an adjustable float switch and a piggy-back plug for automatic operation. This allows the pump to turn on/off automatically based on the water level in the sump basin/pit. Please adjust the length of the float switch appropriately using a cable lock to meet your sewage needs
- Durable and Tough: The corrosion-resistant stainless steel and thermoplastic construction, cast-iron volute ensure an extended service life in demanding sump pump applications. The top suction design eliminates airlock and minimizes clogging from debris in the bottom of the sump pit. It's easy to install with no need to drill a weep hole
- Safe and Simple: The built-in thermal overload protection prevents the motor from dry burning in low water conditions, ensuring the water pump is protected from damage. The 20 ft UL power cable ensures safe operation and convenience. With a 1-1/2” NPT discharge to comply with building codes, it is suitable for easy installation in 18” diameter or larger sump basins
- Worry-Free: This heavy-duty basement pump is 100% manufacturer-tested and comes with a 1-year warranty. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our service team. Aquastrong customer service provides professional technical support
FEMA CERT’s August 2019 instructor guide cautions: “In some cases, even these suggestions will not be enough to prevent serious damage from flooding.” Mitigation can reduce risk, but no individual measure guarantees protection in every flood.

- Move valuables and important items to higher levels, and keep important documents in a waterproof container or make protected digital copies.
- Monitor local alerts during a flood threat and follow evacuation instructions.
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Ready.gov warns that six inches of moving water can knock a person down and one foot can sweep a vehicle away; these are safety warnings, not basement-protection thresholds.
- Never touch electrical equipment if it is wet or while you are standing in water.
Review flood insurance before a storm
Ready.gov says standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flooding and that flood insurance typically takes up to 30 days to go into effect. FEMA’s hurricane-preparedness guide also describes a 30-day waiting period. Treat these as general source guidance, not a guarantee about every policy: ask your insurer or the National Flood Insurance Program about current eligibility, exclusions, and the effective date for your specific coverage.
