To reduce the chance that viewers think your 24/7 YouTube stream has ended, keep the broadcast connection running while the media changes—and test both the playlist transition and the encoder connection. A video looping correctly does not prove that OBS or the connection to YouTube stayed healthy. No playlist setting or hosting method can guarantee that no viewers will leave.
What can go wrong at a playlist transition?
A playlist is the media being played; an encoder or managed playout service sends the live broadcast to YouTube. Problems can occur on either side. A black frame, sudden audio gap, or source reset can make a transition look like an ending even if the broadcast remains connected. Conversely, media can loop smoothly while OBS, the host computer, or the network stops sending the stream.

YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to send a broadcast to the platform: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder. OBS playback settings and the connection to YouTube should be checked as separate parts of the workflow; see the OBS Media Sources guide.

- Build the playlist and inspect its boundaries. Check the order, the last frame of each video, the first frame of the next, audio tails, aspect ratios, and any change in source. Look for a blank interval or a sharp volume jump.
- Test using a private or unlisted stream, or a noncritical broadcast. Watch the program output and YouTube live preview through several transitions. Keep a fallback scene or slate ready in case a source fails.
- Confirm broadcast health separately from playback. Check OBS’s outgoing preview, audio meters, dropped-frame or connection indicators, and YouTube’s stream status. A clean transition in the preview does not by itself establish that the public broadcast is still connected.
- Monitor after playlist or scene changes. Note the time of any interruption and compare encoder logs with YouTube’s stream status if the issue recurs. This can help distinguish a media-source problem from an encoder or connection failure.
These checks are operational precautions, not a guarantee that a transition will retain viewers. No transition-specific viewer-retention benchmark is established by the available sources.

Using OBS with local files and a VLC playlist
In a local setup, OBS sends the program output—including the media source or VLC playlist—to YouTube. Configure playback and looping in the relevant source, then test the complete path from media playback through OBS to YouTube’s live preview. Keep the computer, media files, OBS, VLC where used, power, and internet available for the stream to continue.
Be careful when editing a live playlist
Do not assume that changing a VLC playlist file while OBS is broadcasting will reliably update the live output. In a 2023 OBS forum discussion, an operator reported mixed results: an edit appeared on one occasion but not another until OBS and YouTube were stopped and restarted. That is an anecdotal report, not an official guarantee about current behavior. If you need to change content during a broadcast, verify the live output; for important changes, schedule maintenance or test a scene-and-automation workflow in advance.

A volunteer in the same discussion suggested preparing replacement content in a scene before switching. Treat that as community advice and test it with your own sources and OBS setup. A UPS may help a local computer and router ride through a brief power interruption, but it cannot fix an internet outage, encoder crash, or YouTube-side issue. For a local 24/7 setup’s dependencies, see iTechGuides’ 24/7 YouTube streaming guide.

The right approach depends on how much control you need and who will monitor the encoder. A YouTube playlist page is not itself a live encoder feed: an encoder or managed playout service must send the broadcast.

| Approach | How playlist changes work | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud playout | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream; it loops from the cloud. | Does not depend on a home computer staying on. StreamNeo’s stated features include automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; verify the workflow with a test before relying on it. |
| OBS with local files and VLC | OBS sends local playback as the program feed. Live edits to a VLC playlist should be tested rather than assumed to reload cleanly. | Hands-on control and little dependence on a separate playout provider, but the computer, files, software, power, and internet must remain available. |
| Self-hosted FFmpeg on a VPS | A configured FFmpeg process can loop prepared files and send the output to YouTube over RTMP. | Offers scripting and operator control but requires Linux and FFmpeg skills, server administration, storage, and monitoring. A public GitHub example is one operator’s implementation, not an independently tested prescription: ytlive repository. |
| Other managed cloud playout | Providers describe uploading media, managing playlists, and connecting a service to YouTube; some describe live edits and reconnect or restart functions. | Less dependence on a home PC, but behavior, limits, recovery, and pricing are vendor-specific claims to verify. See Looping Stream and Streamloop for their current descriptions. |
Compare options by whether edits take effect without ending the public broadcast, who operates and monitors the encoder, how failures are detected and recovered, technical skill required, storage and quality limits, and ongoing cost. Vendor or operator descriptions of uptime and recovery are not independent test results.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for prepared video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshoot a stream that appears to stop at a transition
- Black frame or audio gap, but YouTube still shows the stream live: inspect the outgoing preview and the source’s playlist order, media boundaries, and scene changes. Test the affected transition before changing the live playlist again.
- The playlist advances locally but the live preview does not: check whether the source update reached OBS’s program output. A live VLC edit may not reload consistently; verify output rather than assuming the file change took effect.
- OBS shows connection or dropped-frame warnings: treat this as a broadcast-path problem, not merely a playlist issue. Check the encoder indicators and YouTube stream status, then inspect logs if the problem recurs.
- The local stream stops when nobody is at the computer: check that the host, playback software, files, power, and internet are still available. A UPS addresses only brief power interruptions.
- A VPS process stops or a cloud service reconnects: check the relevant process or provider status and test recovery with your own YouTube configuration. A restart or reconnect description is not proof of uninterrupted viewer playback.
Keep copyright and channel eligibility in view
Having permission to play a video is a separate question from keeping the broadcast technically connected. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every item in the playlist and that your use complies with YouTube’s applicable rules. A technically continuous stream does not guarantee that its content is permitted or that a channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s current policies and account-specific notices should guide those decisions.
