Follow the steps below before relying on the stream overnight.
Check that your YouTube channel can stream
Before configuring the PC, confirm that the channel is eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. Check the current status and setup guidance in YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers.

Prepare sleep sounds that you have the rights to use. A live stream is not permission to rebroadcast music, recordings, artwork, or other material owned by someone else. Permission to use a track and eligibility for monetization are separate questions; do not assume that a long-running or minimally changing stream will qualify for monetization simply because it can be broadcast.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream, following YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key associates it with the correct stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. You can reuse a custom key through YouTube’s stream settings if that suits your setup; reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Choose the intended stream in Live Control Room. Confirm that the title, visibility, and scheduled or live status are correct before starting the encoder.
Configure the encoder on the spare PC
Choose an output the PC and connection can sustain
In your encoder, enter the server URL and stream key, then select a video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the PC can encode reliably and your measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, as well as AAC or MP3 audio. Not every encoder supports every combination, so choose settings available in your software and compatible with YouTube’s current recommendations in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. There is no single ideal bitrate for every sleep sounds stream: base it on the output quality you want, your PC’s capabilities, and the bandwidth available after accounting for other internet use.
Keep the audio feed continuous
Load the sleep audio or video into the encoder’s playback or playlist feature, if it has one, and enable looping. Check the transition between files and listen for silence, abrupt volume changes, or gaps. If you are streaming audio with a static image, configure the encoder to keep sending a live feed rather than stopping when the audio file ends.

Make the PC less likely to stop overnight
- Disable sleep and hibernation while streaming. In your operating system’s power settings, set the PC not to sleep during the planned broadcast. Menu names vary by operating system and version; verify the setting on the actual machine, including what happens when the display turns off or the lid is closed, if applicable.
- Keep the encoder available after a restart. Decide how you will restart it if the application crashes, the PC reboots, or power is lost. Check the encoder’s own reconnect behavior and your operating system’s startup options; do not assume either will resume the broadcast without testing.
- Place the PC where it can ventilate. A machine under sustained load needs unobstructed airflow. Keep it away from bedding, fabric, and other heat-trapping surroundings.
- Consider a wired connection for a stationary PC. YouTube emphasizes reliable network capacity; Ethernet is a reasonable way to reduce dependence on Wi-Fi conditions, but it is not a YouTube requirement and cannot prevent an ISP or power outage.
- Plan for power interruptions. Decide what should happen after a power loss and verify that the PC and encoder actually recover as intended. A backup battery for the PC alone does not preserve internet service or prevent YouTube-side interruptions.
Check bandwidth, preview, and stream health
Measure the upload bandwidth available where the PC will run, preferably at a time when the connection is normally busy. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate; include primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable. Other household or office uploads can consume that margin. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test well ahead of the first overnight run. YouTube recommends setting up in advance and testing the encoder. Use an unlisted test where appropriate.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears and inspect the stream-health indicators before treating the stream as ready.
- Listen and watch for real-world problems. Confirm that audio is audible and continuous, the image is correct, and the PC and network remain stable for a meaningful test period.
- Verify the public watch page. Check the stream from a separate device or browser, not only from the encoder’s local preview.
- Monitor a live run. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and audio/video quality during an event. A stream that starts successfully is not proof that it will remain healthy all night.
Understand the 24-hour archive limitation
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If a complete recording matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and plan around the stated under-12-hour boundary rather than assuming the whole day will be saved. Troubleshoot common interruptions
Live Control Room does not show a preview
Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, that it is sending to the stream you opened in Live Control Room, and that the encoder has actually started. If the key may have been exposed or changed, retrieve or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
The stream buffers or stream health degrades
Check the encoder’s bitrate against the upload capacity available during busy periods. Reduce output bitrate or quality if the connection cannot sustain it, close competing upload activity, and test again. YouTube recommends approximately 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including a backup stream when applicable.

The stream stops when nobody is using the PC
Check sleep and hibernation settings, then confirm that the encoder remains open and its playback is looping. Also review restart and recovery behavior after an application crash or PC reboot; configure and test the relevant encoder or operating-system options rather than assuming they are automatic.

Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status. A network interruption can break the stream even if the PC is still running. Verify the encoder’s reconnect settings and test how it behaves after a brief network interruption before relying on it unattended.
