How to Keep a 24/7 Fireplace Stream Running After a Windows Update

Set Windows active hours, schedule update restarts, and configure OBS’s documented launch parameter—then test the entire recovery sequence on your YouTube stream PC.

Windows updates can interrupt a 24/7 fireplace stream when the PC must restart. Reduce surprise outages by setting Windows active hours and scheduling required restarts for a planned maintenance window. To resume automatically after a reboot, configure OBS to launch with streaming enabled, then rehearse the whole recovery sequence. These steps apply to a typical Windows PC running OBS and streaming to YouTube; they are not a guarantee of unattended recovery on every setup.

Prevent updates from restarting the PC at the worst time

Windows may need a restart to finish installing an update. Microsoft’s active hours guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 describes active hours as a way to help avoid inconvenient restarts, not a permanent block on them.

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to Windows Update. Find Active hours and set the hours that cover the times you need the stream PC to remain available. Labels and options can vary by Windows version and device management settings.
  2. When Windows says a restart is required, use the restart scheduling option on the Windows Update screen to choose a time the outage is acceptable, if that option is available.
  3. If you need a short deferral, use the pause control on the Windows Update screen. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely; the pause is limited and you will eventually need to install updates.

Do not treat pausing updates as a long-term streaming strategy or permanently disable security updates. Plan a maintenance window, and if viewers expect an uninterrupted fireplace stream, tell them when it may be offline.

Configure OBS to start streaming after Windows boots

Active hours and update scheduling reduce the chance of an inconvenient interruption; they do not restart OBS after Windows has rebooted. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as a way to automatically start streaming. Its launch-parameters guide explains how to add parameters to a Windows shortcut. For a launch through Windows Task Scheduler, OBS says to set Start in… to the folder that contains obs64.exe.

  1. Find the OBS shortcut you intend to use, or create one that points to your installed obs64.exe. Do not assume a particular installation path: it depends on where OBS was installed.
  2. Open the shortcut’s properties and append --startstreaming to the target command, after the executable path. Keep the executable path intact and use the shortcut’s Start in field for the OBS folder if needed.
  3. If you use Task Scheduler instead, configure a task to launch OBS with the parameter and set its Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Choose a trigger, user session, and permissions appropriate to your PC. OBS’s documentation does not provide a universal task configuration for every Windows account and policy.
  4. Before relying on it, test under the same Windows account and sign-in conditions expected after an update restart. Confirm OBS opens the intended profile and scene, sources are available, audio works, and streaming starts to the intended destination.

Do not confuse reconnect with reboot recovery

OBS has an automatic reconnect control in Settings > Advanced, described in its connection troubleshooting guidance. That setting can matter when a connection drops while OBS is still running. It is separate from boot-time launch: reconnect alone does not start OBS after a full Windows reboot.

Check YouTube’s stream and event settings

For a YouTube encoder stream, OBS sends video using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube advises treating the key like a password; do not show or share it. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that the intended stream or event is available and that its auto-start and auto-stop selections fit the way you want the encoder to behave. YouTube says reusing stream settings also copies those selections. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide and live stream settings help.

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived after they end. That is an archive behavior, not a promise that an ended stream will resume after an update; check the event state and stream health when you rehearse.

Rehearse the complete update-and-restart sequence

Test the recovery plan on the actual stream PC rather than assuming the individual settings will work together. OBS recommends testing before a stream, and YouTube advises testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health (OBS streaming guide; YouTube encoder settings and stream health).

  1. Save your OBS scene and profile, then arrange a controlled Windows restart at a time when a brief outage is acceptable.
  2. After reboot, check whether the Windows account session and launch mechanism ran as expected, OBS opened, and the correct scene, video source, and audio source are active.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify that the encoder preview and stream health appear as expected and that the intended event is receiving the stream.
  4. Check public playback from another device. A local OBS preview or a connected encoder alone does not confirm that viewers can watch the stream.

Troubleshooting after an update

  • The PC restarted but OBS did not open: Check that the shortcut or scheduled task actually runs for the intended Windows user, that its trigger and permissions are suitable, and that the executable path is correct. For Task Scheduler, verify Start in… points to the folder containing obs64.exe.
  • OBS opened but did not start streaming: Confirm --startstreaming is attached to the launch command, then check OBS’s selected profile, scene, and stream destination. Rehearse again after correcting the command.
  • OBS is streaming locally but YouTube is not receiving it: Check the destination URL and key in OBS and confirm the intended YouTube stream or event is available. Keep the key private; replace it in the encoder if it has been exposed.
  • The stream drops while OBS remains open: Review OBS’s automatic reconnect options under Settings > Advanced, then check network availability and YouTube stream health. This is a connection-recovery issue, not a Windows boot-launch issue.
  • OBS opens with missing video or audio: Check that the source files, devices, and permissions are available after sign-in. A startup command cannot restore a file that was moved or a device that is disconnected.

There is no single documented Windows, OBS, and YouTube recipe that guarantees unattended recovery from every update reboot. Results depend on Windows restart and sign-in behavior, task settings, OBS profile and source availability, network access, YouTube event state, and a valid stream key.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your fireplace stream is a prerecorded video loop, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
