Each layer addresses a different failure; none guarantees an uninterrupted stream if the backup, equipment or YouTube also fails.
Start with the bottleneck: reliable upload bandwidth
For a live stream, upload capacity—not download speed—is the constraint. YouTube says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload performance at the actual streaming location and at relevant hours, while accounting for other people and devices using the connection. A single speed-test result, especially a download figure, is not enough to size the link. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Check the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate against sustained upload capacity.
- Test while the stream is running and other normal household or venue traffic is present.
- Repeat measurements at times when mobile networks or fixed broadband may be more congested.
Set up a genuinely separate backup connection
A mobile hotspot or broadband router with a SIM can provide an alternate route when fixed broadband fails, but only if it works at the streaming site. Check signal and sustained upload there, with the encoder sending video. A second SIM on the same carrier may share an outage risk with the primary route; a different provider can reduce that correlated risk, but does not ensure good coverage or capacity at your location.

That is a way to restore connectivity, not a promise that the live stream will continue automatically during a switch. Compare candidate backup links by their real performance and operating conditions:

- Whether the backup uses infrastructure independent of the primary connection.
- Upload speed and stability at the exact site and relevant hours, including network congestion.
- Carrier coverage and compatibility with the modem, router, SIM and any external antenna.
- Data allowance, fair-use limits and recurring cost for continuous video.
- Whether switching is manual or automatic, and how long viewers may see an interruption.
- Power draw and the runtime your backup power can provide.

Configure and rehearse encoder failover
A backup internet connection and a backup encoder are separate safeguards. Configure a backup encoder in your live-stream workflow, then test the rollover deliberately. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection; consult Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips for platform guidance.

- Choose a controlled test. Use an unlisted stream or another controlled test setup so you can check the changeover without disrupting viewers.
- Start the primary encoder and verify the live output. Check the watch page and confirm audio and video are present.
- Trigger the failover test. Stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet connection, following YouTube’s test guidance.
- Check the viewer experience. Confirm whether the player rolls over, how long any gap lasts, and whether mobile playback behaves as expected.
- Verify what happens locally. Check the recording or archive, audio and video, and confirm the process for returning to the primary encoder.
- Write down the recovery procedure. Record the sequence for changing links, restarting or switching encoders, and notifying viewers if the stream is unavailable.
Repeat the rehearsal after changing an encoder, network provider or other key equipment. A failover that has not been tested should not be treated as dependable.

A UPS can keep a modem, router and encoding computer running through a short local power interruption. It does not restore a failed internet provider, mobile network or YouTube service. Size it based on the actual connected load and the runtime needed; the official sources cited here do not specify a particular UPS size or model.

- Include the modem, router and encoder computer in the load you plan to protect.
- Check expected runtime for that load rather than relying only on a UPS’s headline capacity.
- Test the switchover with the equipment operating, and confirm the internet link and stream remain usable for the required interval.
Make recovery an operating procedure
For a devotional broadcast, assign someone to monitor stream health and know what to do when it degrades or disconnects. The procedure should identify how to switch links, restart or change encoders, check the public watch page, and communicate if viewers lose access. Keep a log of tests and failures, including the time, active connection, observed upload performance and recovery steps. Update the procedure when providers or equipment change.
Plan for residual risk: a backup route may be congested or unavailable, failover may create a viewing gap, and a platform or equipment problem may affect both paths. “Continuous” is an engineering goal, not an absolute guarantee.

What the India-specific figures do—and do not—mean
The National Informatics Centre (NIC) lists dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream for the specific case in which a hired agency provides the feed. This is a prerequisite for that service scenario, not a universal target for devotional live streams. NIC also says its webcast services are for Central and State Government institutions; an individual temple or trust should not assume it is eligible. TRAI’s wireless-internet FAQ defines a mobile provider’s service being unavailable in a district for more than four hours as a “significant network outage” for the FAQ’s regulatory context.
