How to Keep 4K 60fps on a YouTube Live Replay After the Stream Ends

Send a genuine 2160p60 feed, keep the broadcast under 12 hours, and verify the archive’s available quality. YouTube does not guarantee every replay will offer 4K60.

To give a YouTube Live replay the best chance of retaining 4K at 60 fps, send a genuine 2160p60 feed, use YouTube’s codec-specific encoder guidance, keep the broadcast under 12 hours, and check the finished archive’s quality menu. YouTube automatically archives eligible 2160p streams under 12 hours, but its help pages do not guarantee that every replay will offer a selectable 2160p60 version. Record a local copy as a backup.

What determines the replay quality?

YouTube transcodes a live feed into multiple playback formats. The quality you select in your encoder describes what you send to YouTube; it does not guarantee that the archive will offer that same resolution and frame rate. A 2160p60 source, a suitable connection, and correct encoder settings give YouTube an appropriate input, but you must verify the resulting replay.

Encoding cannot add detail or frames that are absent from your source. If the original video is lower resolution or frame rate, setting the encoder to 2160p60 does not turn it into genuine 4K60 footage.

Set up a 2160p60 stream

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and says it detects encoder settings automatically by default. For a standard 2160p60 feed, follow the codec-specific bitrate guidance below. These are ingest settings, not promises about the replay rendition.

Codec YouTube guidance for 2160p60
H.264 35 Mbps recommended bitrate setting
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum

Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps. Choose a codec your encoder supports and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. At 2160p, low-latency optimization is unavailable, so YouTube uses normal latency.

Before you start the broadcast

  1. Set the encoder’s output resolution to 2160p and frame rate to 60 fps. Select a supported codec and its corresponding bitrate guidance above.
  2. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, no longer than 4 seconds. Use RTMPS ingest where available.
  3. Test with moving footage and audio. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, review the preview and stream-health messages before the event; watch for connection or encoding warnings.
  4. Start a local recording and confirm that the file is growing. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.
  5. If automatic YouTube archiving is essential, schedule the broadcast to finish in less than 12 hours.

Keep the stream under 12 hours

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and specifically includes 2160p (4K) streams in its archive guidance. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat the limit as a risk boundary: plan to end well before 12 hours if you need YouTube’s archive, and rely on the verified local recording as a fallback.

Check the replay after the broadcast

  1. End the live stream normally.
  2. In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the Live tab to find the archived stream.
  3. When the video is available, open its playback quality menu and check whether 2160p and 60 fps are offered.
  4. If the archive is missing or does not offer the expected quality, check the local recording. If no YouTube archive appears, confirm that the stream was under 12 hours.

YouTube’s cited help pages do not specify a fixed processing time or guarantee that every archive will expose a 2160p60 rendition. Do not infer failure from a particular elapsed time alone; check the available playback options and keep the local file until you have confirmed the result.

DVR does not control archive quality

DVR governs pausing and rewinding while a stream is live, not the quality of the finished replay. YouTube says viewers can watch the recording once it is available even if DVR is off. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, which is another reason not to treat DVR as an archive safeguard.

Troubleshoot a replay that is not 4K60

What you see What to check
The replay has no 2160p option Confirm that the encoder actually sent 2160p, inspect the source resolution, and check the stream-health messages. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a 2160p rendition for every archive; retain the local recording.
The replay is not 60 fps Check the source frame rate and the encoder’s output setting. An encoder setting cannot add frames missing from the source, and YouTube does not guarantee a 60 fps archive rendition.
The live feed has warnings or interruptions Review stream health and whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Test beforehand and choose a reliable bitrate within the applicable codec guidance.
No archive appears Check whether the event exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured. Check the local recording for a usable copy.
You expect DVR settings to change the replay DVR is for pausing and rewinding during the live broadcast. It does not determine replay quality or whether an archive exists.

Do you need a dedicated encoder?

Only consider dedicated hardware if your existing setup cannot send a 2160p60 feed. YouTube’s verified encoder list describes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as capable of streaming directly to YouTube at up to 2160p60. That capability may suit a creator who needs a hardware encoder, but it is not required for every setup and cannot guarantee YouTube’s archived playback quality.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously running YouTube channel that plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the uploaded video is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card.
