To join Windows Insider, open the Insider settings for your version of Windows, link the Microsoft account registered with the program, choose a channel, accept the device agreements, and restart. Switching channels later may require a clean installation, depending on the build currently installed and the channel you want.
Before you enroll or change channels
Insider builds are pre-release software. Microsoft warns that they are less stable than production builds, are not serviced, and eventually expire. If you rely on this PC, consider whether you can tolerate problems or reinstall Windows before enrolling. Microsoft identifies Feedback Hub as the app for sending feedback about builds. Do not assume a channel change is a simple, reversible dropdown choice. The build installed on your device and the build offered in the destination channel can determine whether Windows can switch in place. Before any clean install or restore, make a separate backup of files you want to keep.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsJoin the Windows Insider Program
- Open the Insider settings. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. In Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Get Started.
- Select Link an account, then sign in with the account registered for the Insider Program. If needed, choose the option to use another account and enter the account type and credentials used to register.
- Choose a channel and continue. Review the device agreements and accept them to proceed.
- Choose to restart now or later. Builds for the selected channel begin after the restart.

Choose a channel with the build in mind
Use the channels Windows offers on your device, but judge a potential switch by more than the channel selector: check whether the target channel is receiving a lower build number than the one installed, and whether Microsoft says an in-place move is available. The official material cited here does not establish a complete current ranking of every channel’s risk, update cadence, or suitability, so it would be misleading to present one.
Dev to Beta: a dated, temporary example
On January 9, 2026, Microsoft said Dev and Beta were receiving the same Windows 11 version 25H2-based builds and offered Dev Insiders a temporary opportunity to switch to Beta. The notice said the opportunity would close when Dev advanced to a higher build number. This describes the conditions at that time; it does not establish that the switch remains available now. Leaving Canary or moving to a lower build
In a March 6, 2026 Canary-channel notice, Microsoft said leaving Canary requires a clean install of Windows 11. It also said that switching to a channel receiving lower build numbers requires a clean installation because of technical setup requirements. A channel selection should not be treated as a downgrade that will necessarily preserve the existing Windows installation. Consult the device’s offered choices and the current official notice before proceeding. See the March 6, 2026 Canary notice.
Stop receiving Insider builds
If the device is already on a production build
Microsoft’s documented opt-out path applies when the device is running a production build. Wait for a public production build, then verify the installed build in Settings > System > About or by running winver. Once on a production build, go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop getting preview builds and follow the prompts. Microsoft says opting out while already on a production build does not lose information.

If you need to restore the original Windows installation
Restoring with the appropriate recovery image or performing a clean install is different from opting out on a production build. Microsoft advises backing up information you want to keep before restoring a PC. Back up files separately before recovery or a clean installation; an external drive is one optional way to do so, not a Microsoft requirement.
