Include the port—27015 is common, but the host may use another one. You can also add the address through Steam’s server browser, or place +connect IP:PORT in TF2’s launch options if you intentionally want the game to attempt that server every time it starts.

What you need before connecting
Ask the server host for the complete address, including the port and any password. An address written as SERVER_IP:PORT has two parts: the numeric server address and the port after the colon. For example, the host might give you SERVER_IP:27015. Do not remove the colon or assume that every server uses the common port.

- Password, if required: Keep it available. You can enter it when TF2 asks or include it in the console command.
- Running game and Steam: Start Team Fortress 2 through Steam before using the in-game console or browser.
- Network access: Your firewall must allow TF2 to communicate. A server that is offline or already full will not accept a new connection.
Steam and TF2 menu wording can change with client updates. The console commands are generally the most direct route, while the browser instructions below reflect the menu path documented by community guides and should be checked against the labels in your current Steam client.
Method 1: Join with the TF2 console
The console method works from inside the game and is usually the quickest option once it is enabled. Console access is disabled by default.

Enable the developer console in the keyboard settings
- Launch Team Fortress 2.
- Open the game’s keyboard settings and enter the advanced keyboard options.
- Turn on the setting that enables the developer console.
- Note the key shown for opening the console. The default is the backtick/tilde key, usually displayed as
`or~near the upper-left area of a US keyboard.
If you prefer not to enable it through the menu, adding -console to TF2’s launch arguments causes the console to open automatically when the game starts. The key binding and labels can differ by keyboard layout or client version, so use the key shown in your own settings.
Open the console and run the connect command
- While TF2 is running, press the configured console key.
- Type
connect SERVER_IP:PORT, replacing both placeholders with the address supplied by the host. - Press Enter and wait for TF2 to attempt the connection.
Keep the port in the command. The official TF2 dedicated-server reference commonly uses port 27015, but that is not a guarantee that your target server uses it. A command with the port omitted is a frequent cause of failure because TF2 may try the wrong endpoint.
Use the address exactly as provided. Do not add a web prefix, quotation marks, or spaces inside the address. The command should have one space between connect and the address, such as connect SERVER_IP:27015 when the host has confirmed that port.
Supply a server password
If the server is password-protected, you have two reported options:

- Run
connect SERVER_IP:PORTfirst and enter the password when TF2 prompts you. - Put the password in the same console submission:
connect SERVER_IP:PORT; password SERVER_PASSWORD.
Replace SERVER_PASSWORD with the password exactly as given. If the combined command does not authenticate on your client, use the prompt method instead; community instructions differ on which sequence is handled most reliably by a particular client build or server configuration. Avoid sharing a password in screenshots or public chat.
Reconnect without retyping the address
After a connection drops, the console provides two useful helpers:

retryattempts to reconnect to the last server.reloadreloads the connection to the server you are currently using.
These commands do not discover a new server. They reuse the connection information already held by TF2, so they are useful only after you have successfully entered the intended address.
Method 2: Add the address in Steam’s server browser
The Steam client offers a server-browser route that avoids typing a console command. Community documentation describes the following sequence; Steam’s exact labels may move as the client changes.

- Open Steam’s View menu.
- Select Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Choose Add server by IP.
- Paste the complete
SERVER_IP:PORTaddress into the address field and add it to your favorites. - Select the newly added entry in the favorites list.
- If the server has a password, enter it when requested.
- Press Connect.
Adding the entry to Favorites is useful when you expect to return to the same server: you can select it again instead of re-entering the address. This route is documented by community sources rather than a Valve support page, and the in-game server-browser interface was not independently verified against every current client version. If a label is missing, look for the equivalent favorites or add-by-address control in the Game Servers window, or use the console method.
When the browser is the better choice
- Use it when you want a saved, clickable entry for a server you visit repeatedly.
- Use it when you would rather paste the address into a Steam window than enable a developer console.
- Use the console instead when the browser cannot find the entry, the menu has changed, or you need to test the address quickly.
Method 3: Connect automatically with a Steam launch option
TF2 can attempt a connection as soon as it launches if you add +connect IP:PORT to the game’s Steam launch options. In Steam, open TF2’s game properties, find the launch-options field, and enter the command with the host’s complete address. For example, the value has the form +connect SERVER_IP:PORT.
This option is persistent: it runs on every launch until you remove it. Community guides generally prefer the in-game console for normal use because an automatic connection can be inconvenient when you want to reach the main menu, choose another server, or troubleshoot. Remove the launch option after a one-time test, or leave it in place only if connecting to that server on every start is intentional.

For a single visit, the console is usually the shortest path. For a regular destination, save it in Favorites. Use the launch option only when automatic connection at startup is the behavior you actually want.

Troubleshooting a failed connection
Most failures come from the address, the network, or the server’s current state. Work through these checks in order so you change one variable at a time.

- Re-copy the address from the host. Check every digit and make sure the colon separates the IP from the port.
- Confirm that a port was included. Do not assume the common port is correct for this server.
- Ask the host to confirm that the server is currently running and listening on that address.
- Try the same address through the other supported route. For example, use the console if the Steam favorite fails, or add the address to Favorites if the console attempt was mistyped.
If both routes fail with the same address, the problem is more likely to be the supplied endpoint, the server’s availability, or your network access than the menu you used.
TF2 cannot communicate through your firewall
Your firewall may be blocking the game. Allow Team Fortress 2 through the firewall, then retry the connection. The exact approval dialog and settings location depend on your operating system and security software; the important check is that TF2 is permitted to communicate on the network you are using. If you are on a managed or restricted network, its administrator may also need to allow game traffic.
The server is full or offline
A correct address still cannot connect when the target server is offline or has no available slot. Verify its status with the host and try again later if it is full. Repeatedly running retry will not make an offline server available; it simply attempts the same endpoint again.
Password rejected or no password prompt appears
- Check capitalization and punctuation in the password supplied by the host.
- If the combined command fails, connect without the password portion and wait for TF2 to prompt you.
- Ask the host whether the password has changed or whether the server is currently protected.
Do not publish the password in a public chat or paste it into a screenshot. A successful network connection and a failed authentication are separate problems, so confirm the password only after the address and port are known to be correct.
The console will not open
- Return to the advanced keyboard options and verify that the developer console is enabled.
- Check which key the current client shows for opening it; the default backtick/tilde key can be different on other keyboard layouts.
- Restart TF2 after changing the setting if the key still does nothing.
- As an alternative, start TF2 with the
-consolelaunch argument so the console opens automatically.
The launch option keeps sending you to the wrong server
Open TF2’s Steam properties and remove or edit the +connect IP:PORT entry. Because launch options are applied every time the game starts, an old address can look like a new connection problem even after you intend to use another server. Once removed, launch TF2 normally and connect from the console or Favorites instead.
A repeatable connection workflow
