To join a Minecraft Bedrock server, open Minecraft, choose Play, open Servers, and select a server. On PC or mobile, you can also choose Add Server and enter the server address and port supplied by its administrator. The mobile game once called Pocket Edition is now part of Bedrock Edition.

What you need before joining
Bedrock multiplayer works only when the game, server, account and network meet the same requirements. Check these items before troubleshooting connection errors:

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Matching edition: Bedrock players join Bedrock servers, worlds, Realms and LAN games. Java Edition players need Java-compatible servers and cannot use a Bedrock server through the ordinary multiplayer menus.
- Current game version: Update Minecraft to the newest release available for your device. A server or friend’s world running a different version may reject the connection.
- Reliable internet or LAN: Public servers and Realms require internet access; a local game also depends on a working local network.
- Microsoft account: Console and mobile multiplayer requires signing in to a Microsoft account. Child accounts need multiplayer permission enabled by the account holder.
- Console online service: Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch may require the platform’s applicable paid online service for multiplayer.
- Correct server details: For a manually added server, obtain the exact address and port from the administrator. Bedrock’s documented default port is 19132, but an independently operated server can use another port.
Account and platform labels can change as Minecraft and console software are updated. If a menu item is missing, install pending game and system updates, then sign in again.
It also helps to know what kind of session you are joining. A featured server is selected from Minecraft’s own list. An external server is operated independently and requires connection details. A friend’s world is usually available only while that friend is playing, while a Realm is an invitation-based world managed by its owner. These choices affect how you enter, how long the world stays available and who controls access.

Join a featured Bedrock server
Featured servers are the simplest option because Minecraft lists them directly in the Bedrock Servers tab. This route is available on Bedrock devices, including the mobile edition historically known as Pocket Edition.
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
- From the title screen, select Play.
- Open the Servers tab.
- Select a listed server to read its description, game modes and any displayed rules.
- Select Play or the server’s join button.
- Accept any online-safety or multiplayer warning shown by the game.
A server may download a required resource pack before you enter. Let the download finish, and review the server’s rules before chatting or spending time there. Minecraft’s official guidance summarizes the initial step this way: “To connect to a Bedrock Edition server, start Minecraft and hit ‘Play’ in the main menu.”
Recommended Free Tools
Featured does not mean that every server is identical. Read the displayed description for the server’s game modes, age guidance, chat expectations and any purchase or rank information. A server can change its schedule or temporarily go offline even though its listing remains visible. If one listing fails, try another featured option to determine whether the problem is local to that server.
Add an external server on PC or mobile
Windows Bedrock and mobile Bedrock support a manual server entry. Use this when an administrator gives you a custom address rather than a server appearing in Minecraft’s featured list.
Enter the address and port
- Ask the server administrator for the current server address. It may be a domain name or a numeric IP address.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Select Servers, then scroll down to Add Server.
- Enter a name in Server Name. This is only a label on your device, so choose something recognizable.
- Enter the administrator’s value in Server Address. Do not add spaces or change the spelling.
- Enter the supplied port in Port. If no custom port was supplied, the documented Bedrock default is 19132; that default is not a guarantee that every server uses it.
- Select Add and play to save the server and connect immediately, or select Add server to save it without joining.
If the administrator supplied a domain and a separate port, put only the domain in the address field and the number in the port field. If the server supplied an IP address, enter that address exactly. A web address that opens in a browser is not automatically a playable Bedrock endpoint; use the connection details specifically provided for Minecraft.
Do not assume that a Java address will work simply because the server’s website mentions both editions. Ask for the Bedrock endpoint and Bedrock port. Some operators publish separate instructions for each edition, and a server may require a whitelist, an account registration step or a particular resource pack in addition to the address.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Join it later
After saving, return to Play > Servers and find the saved entry. Select it and choose Play. If the entry shows as unavailable, the server may be offline, full, restricted by a whitelist, or using a different address or game version.
If you change networks or the administrator migrates the server, edit the saved entry rather than creating several nearly identical entries. Keep the name descriptive, such as the community name and game mode, so you can distinguish it from other servers. Saving an entry stores connection information on your device; it does not grant access or keep the server running.

Can you add a custom server on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?
In the normal console Servers menu, official Minecraft help limits Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions to the featured-server list. Do not expect the PC/mobile Add Server fields to appear on those consoles.
On a console, use one of these supported paths instead:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a server from the featured Servers tab.
- Join a friend through the Friends tab.
- Use an invitation to a Realm.
- Use the console’s supported multiplayer and online-service features.
Unofficial workarounds that alter DNS settings or route console traffic through another device are outside the ordinary Minecraft support path and may stop working after platform or game updates. They can also introduce account, privacy or stability risks, so this guide does not present them as guaranteed solutions.
That limitation is about the normal menu, not about whether the console can play Bedrock multiplayer at all. A console player can still join supported friends, Realms and listed servers when the account, subscription and game version qualify. If a friend sends a custom IP, ask whether there is a Realm invitation or a featured listing instead of expecting a hidden address field.
Join a friend’s Bedrock world
A friend’s ordinary world is controlled by the person who opened it. The host generally needs to remain in the world for you to play; you cannot join that session while the host is offline.
Host and joining-player checklist
- Both players use Bedrock Edition and have compatible game versions.
- Both players are signed in to Microsoft accounts and are Minecraft friends.
- The host has multiplayer enabled in the world settings.
- Each account’s privacy and child-account permissions allow multiplayer.
- Both players have a working internet connection, unless they are using a supported LAN setup.
Join from the Friends tab
- Ask the host to open the world and remain online.
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Friends tab.
- Look under Joinable Friends.
- Select the friend’s world and choose Join.
If the host does not appear, check that you are signed into the expected Microsoft account, that you are friends on that account, and that the host’s world is still open.
A friend-hosted world is convenient for a small group but is not a persistent server. Progress remains in the host’s world, yet other players normally cannot enter it while the host is away. For an always-available shared world, compare a Realm or dedicated server instead.
Join a Bedrock Realm
A Realm is an invitation-based Bedrock world rather than a public server selected from the featured list. The Realm owner or host must provide the invitation or the information Minecraft uses to join it.

- Accept the invitation while signed in to the Microsoft account that should receive access.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Use the invitation or Realm entry supplied by the owner to open the Realm.
- Choose the Realm and select Play when Minecraft presents the join option.
Realm access is controlled by the owner. If an invitation was revoked, expired or sent to a different account, the owner must correct the access rather than changing a server IP or port.
Unlike a normal friend world, a Realm is intended to remain available for invited members without requiring the owner to be in the world at that moment. It is still not an open public server: membership, moderation and invitations remain under the owner’s control.
Which way of joining is right for you?
| Option | Who controls the world | How you enter | Platform notes | Availability | Trust and safety |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Featured public server | The server operator | Play > Servers, choose a listed server | Available through the Bedrock Servers tab, including consoles | Usually independent of a particular friend’s presence, but the operator can take it offline | Read the displayed description and rules before joining or sharing information |
| External public server | The server operator | Play > Servers > Add Server, then enter address and port | Manual entry is supported on PC and mobile; normal console menus are featured-only | Can remain available when a friend is offline, depending on the operator | Verify the address, whitelist requirements and rules with the administrator |
| Friend’s world | The friend who hosts the world | Play > Friends > Joinable Friends | Use compatible Bedrock devices and account permissions | Normally depends on the host being online | Access is limited to the host’s invited friends and world settings |
| Realm | The Realm owner | Invitation or Realm join information | Uses Bedrock multiplayer and the relevant platform account | Designed for invited members rather than an open public list | The owner controls membership; do not share invitation details publicly |
Choose a featured server when you want the fewest setup steps. Choose an external server when an administrator has supplied a specific community address and you are on PC or mobile. Choose a friend’s world for a temporary session with people you know, and choose a Realm or dedicated server when the world should remain available beyond one player’s session.
Java and Bedrock servers are different
“Minecraft server” does not identify one universal network. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server ecosystems. A Java player should obtain Java server details, while a Bedrock player needs a Bedrock-compatible address and port. Installing the mobile or Windows version does not make a Java server joinable through Bedrock’s menus.
When someone sends you a server address, ask which edition it supports before entering it. If the administrator advertises both editions, ask for the Bedrock connection details specifically; the address, port or supported features may differ.
Fix “Unable to connect to world”
The message is a general connection failure, not proof that one particular setting is wrong. Work through these checks in order so that simple address and account problems are eliminated first.

Compare every character with the administrator’s current instructions. Confirm that a domain was not mistyped, that an IP address contains the correct numbers, and that the port is in the separate port field. 19132 is the documented default, not a universal replacement for a custom port.
2. Check whether the server or host is online
A third-party server can be down for maintenance, full, whitelisted or discontinued. For a friend’s world, ask the host to stay in the world while you try again; an ordinary friend-hosted session is not joinable when the host is offline.

3. Update every player’s game
Install the newest Minecraft release on your device and ask friends to do the same. Version mismatches are especially likely after one platform receives an update before another.

Open the account currently signed into Minecraft and confirm it is the account that received the friend request or Realm invitation. For a child account, the family account settings must permit multiplayer and communication. Changing an unrelated account’s settings will not remove the restriction.
5. Check console online access
On Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, verify that the required platform online service is active for the account trying to play. Without that service, featured servers, friend worlds or Realms may remain unavailable even when the internet connection itself works.
6. Follow the third-party server’s own rules
The operator may require a whitelist, a specific resource pack, an account registration step, a particular game version or a different port. Mojang and Microsoft support pages cannot guarantee availability or configuration for an independently operated server. Use the operator’s status page or support channel for those conditions, and never give the operator your Microsoft password or security code.
7. Test the connection with a known supported option
If a featured server loads but one external server does not, your Bedrock installation and general connection are probably working; concentrate on that server’s address, port, status and access rules. If no multiplayer option works, return to account permissions, platform online access, game updates and the network connection.

Do not repeatedly change several settings at once. Test after each correction, and note whether the failure occurs before the server appears, while a resource pack downloads or after you select the world. That timing gives the operator useful information and helps distinguish an account restriction from an unavailable server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resource packs, rules and account safety
Joining a server can trigger a resource-pack download or an online warning. Read what Minecraft displays before accepting. A resource pack changes visual or audio assets; it should not require your Microsoft password, one-time security code or payment credentials.
- Use the official Minecraft server list and inspect each server’s description and rules.
- Keep chat and multiplayer permissions appropriate for the player’s age.
- Never send a server operator your Microsoft account password, authentication code or recovery information.
- Leave a server if its chat, downloads or requests make you uncomfortable, and report problems through the platform’s available safety tools.
Server staff may ask for a separate in-game username or registration, but that is not the same as your Microsoft login. Treat links in chat cautiously, especially requests for codes, remote access or payment. Parents and guardians should review both the console’s communication controls and the Microsoft account’s multiplayer permissions.
Best Value
If you want to run your own persistent Bedrock world
Joining and hosting are separate tasks. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation covers downloading the server software, starting a dedicated instance and connecting to it from the server list. A dedicated server can provide a persistent world without relying on one friend’s game session, but the owner must handle software updates, network access, backups, permissions and moderation. This is a hosting decision, not a requirement for joining an existing public server, friend world or Realm.
Before inviting others, the owner should decide who can connect, how backups will be made, which version will be supported and where connection details will be shared. A persistent server also needs a plan for whitelist changes, griefing reports and downtime. Those responsibilities are why joining a hosted option is usually easier than operating one.
Quick decision checklist
- Want the fastest route on any Bedrock device? Open Play > Servers and choose a featured server.
- Have a custom address and use PC or mobile? Open Add Server, enter the address and administrator-supplied port, then choose Add and play.
- Playing with someone you know? Ask the host to open the world, then use Play > Friends > Joinable Friends.
- Received a Realm invitation? Sign into the invited Microsoft account and use the Realm entry supplied by the owner.
- On Xbox, PlayStation or Switch with a custom IP? The normal console menu does not provide the PC/mobile Add Server path; use featured servers, supported friend play or a Realm instead.
- Seeing “Unable to connect to world”? Recheck the address and port, server or host status, versions, account permissions and console online service in that order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pocket Edition different from Bedrock Edition?
No. The mobile game historically called Minecraft Pocket Edition is now part of Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Use Bedrock server details and the Bedrock multiplayer menus.
Where do I enter a Bedrock server IP and port?
On supported PC and mobile versions, open Play > Servers > Add Server. Put the domain or IP in Server Address and the number supplied by the administrator in Port. The documented default is 19132, but a server may use another port.
Can I manually add an external server on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?
The normal console Servers menu is limited to featured servers. Use a featured listing, a supported friend world or a Realm invitation instead of expecting the PC/mobile Add Server fields.
Why does Minecraft say “Unable to connect to world”?
Check the address, port, server status, host availability, game versions, Microsoft-account permissions and required console online service. A third-party operator may also require a whitelist, resource pack or specific version.
Can a Java player join my Bedrock server?
Not through the ordinary Minecraft menus. Java and Bedrock use different server ecosystems, so each player needs a server and edition compatible with their game.
Can I join my friend’s world when they are offline?
Usually not. An ordinary friend-hosted world depends on the host being online. A Realm or dedicated server is designed to remain available when its owner is not actively playing.
Do I need a Microsoft account to play Bedrock multiplayer?
Console and mobile multiplayer requires Microsoft-account sign-in. Child accounts also need multiplayer permissions enabled by the account holder, and consoles may require their platform’s online subscription.
The Bottom Line
For the fastest Bedrock connection, open Play > Servers and choose a featured server. On PC or mobile, use Add Server with the administrator’s exact address and port; 19132 is only the documented default. Consoles normally use featured servers, Friends or Realms. If connection fails, check the address, server status, versions, account permissions and platform online access before changing anything else.
