What joining a faction actually does
A faction is the game’s system for organizing cooperative players in multiplayer. From the Factions screen, players can found or join groups and manage diplomatic relationships such as war and peace. Joining is therefore more than adding a name to a list: acceptance changes which faction-owned or faction-shared blocks and grids you can use, and it places you under that group’s membership and leadership rules.

The official multiplayer documentation describes factions as a way to organize cooperative groups. The official Factions page also makes an important distinction: any player can request to join, but only a leader or founder can accept the request and make the player an actual member.
Before you apply
Check whether you are already in a faction
You cannot join a different faction while you remain a member of your current one. If your goal is to switch groups, leave the existing faction first, then submit the new application. The same restriction applies when you want to create a faction of your own.

Know what the Join button means
Join is an application, not instant membership. The target group may have a leader or founder reviewing requests, and you may need to identify yourself in chat so the decision-maker knows who submitted the application. Until someone with the required authority accepts you, you remain outside the faction.
Use the documented keyboard workflow
The official instructions document the keyboard route with K. Exact controller mappings for console platforms are not established by the cited official material, so the steps below describe the documented keyboard interface rather than assuming a universal console shortcut.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open the Terminal. Press K during play. This opens the interface that contains the faction-management tools.
- Open the Factions tab. Select the tab labeled Factions rather than the other Terminal categories.
- Leave your current faction if necessary. If the screen shows that you are already a member, use the available leave control before trying to join another group. The game requires you not to be in one faction while joining a different one.
- Select the faction you want. Choose the target group from the faction list. Treat the list as a set of applications you can submit, not as an automatic access list.
- Click Join. The game sends your request to that faction. A successful click does not complete the process by itself.
- Contact the group in chat when appropriate. Tell the faction’s members who you are and that you sent an application. This is especially useful when a server’s leaders are coordinating several applicants.
- Wait for a leader or founder to decide. Only a leader or founder can accept the application. You become a member after that acceptance, not when the request is submitted.
Why you are still not in the faction after clicking Join
The usual explanation is that the request is pending. The official Factions page states that players can ask to join any faction but must be accepted by a leader or founder before becoming members. Clicking the button proves that an application was sent; it does not prove that the group approved it.
If the request remains unresolved, check these conditions in order:

- You are still in another faction. Leave that faction before applying to a new one.
- No authorized person has reviewed the request. A regular member cannot complete the approval step; a leader or founder must do it.
- The group has not seen your application. Use in-game chat to tell the faction that you applied.
- You selected the wrong listing. Return to the Factions tab and confirm the name of the group you intended to contact.
Do not treat a pending request as a permissions failure. Membership-related access becomes available only after the acceptance event.
What changes after acceptance
Faction-shared block and grid access
Accepted members can share access to owned blocks and grids with other faction members. This is the practical reason many players join: a ship or base can be operated by trusted people in the same group instead of being restricted to its original individual owner.

Membership enables faction sharing, but it does not remove the need to use the game’s ownership and sharing controls on the relevant blocks or grids. The owner or an authorized player must configure a construct so that faction members receive the intended access. Decide which ships, stations and individual blocks should be shared rather than assuming every object is automatically open.
Interaction with faction-shared blocks
The documented member rank can interact with blocks that are shared with the faction. This allows ordinary members to use cooperative equipment without giving every member the administrative powers of a leader.

Faction weapons do not target members
The documented member permissions also include protection from being targeted by faction weapons. That protection is tied to recognized faction membership, so a pending applicant should not assume it applies before acceptance.
Leaders have additional authority
Leaders can invite new members, confirm applicants and kick existing members. Those powers make the leader role a trust decision: the leader controls who enters, who remains and which applications become active memberships.

- Make sure the intended players are accepted members. A pending applicant is not yet a faction member and should not be used as the basis for access decisions.
- Identify the blocks and grids that need cooperation. A large station may contain sensitive systems that should remain restricted even when a workshop or vehicle is shared.
- Apply the game’s faction-sharing setting to the relevant ownership or access controls. This is what turns ordinary ownership into access that faction members can use.
- Test the result with a trusted member. Confirm that the person can interact with the intended shared equipment and cannot use areas you meant to keep private.
- Recheck after ownership changes. Transferring or rebuilding a grid can change which player or faction owns its blocks, so review sharing whenever a construct changes hands.
The documented rule establishes that faction members can receive shared access to owned blocks and grids; it does not define one universal sharing layout for every ship or base. Configure only what your group needs and keep private systems separate from cooperative ones.
Switching factions safely
Leaving before joining
Because the game does not allow simultaneous membership in the old and new factions, plan the handoff before you leave. Note which ships, bases and blocks depend on faction sharing, then confirm that the new group is ready to process your application. Once you leave, your previous faction’s shared-access arrangements may no longer be appropriate for you.

Applying to the replacement faction
After leaving, open the Factions tab, select the replacement group and submit the Join request. Tell the new group in chat that you have left the previous faction and are waiting for approval. You remain unaffiliated with that group until its leader or founder accepts you.
Handling a rejected or unanswered request
If the new faction does not accept the request, you are not a member and should not expect its shared-grid access or member protections. Contact the group through chat for clarification, or select another faction that fits your plans. The official material does not establish a universal response time or acceptance policy, so each server and group can handle applications differently.

If no existing group fits, you can found one from the same faction interface. Open the Terminal with K, go to Factions and choose Create. You must leave any current faction before founding a new one.
Creating a faction makes you responsible for the decisions that an established leader would normally make. You will need to decide whom to invite, which applications to confirm, when to remove members and how your group handles shared ships and bases. The leader controls invitations, confirmations and removals, so create a group only when you are prepared to manage those responsibilities.

Factions in multiplayer: membership and diplomacy
Faction membership is primarily a cooperation tool, but the multiplayer system also supports diplomatic choices. The official multiplayer documentation describes players as able to declare war or peace from the Factions screen. That means joining a group can affect more than access to a friend’s ship: it can place you within the group’s broader relationship with other factions on the server.
Ask the group about its diplomatic stance before applying. A faction may be peaceful, involved in a conflict or operating under server-specific rules. The cited documentation confirms that war and peace are available faction actions, but it does not provide a universal ranking of factions or a single policy that every server follows.
How to choose between factions
The Factions screen tells you which groups are available, but the better choice depends on how each group operates. Use these practical comparison axes when deciding where to apply:
| Decision area | Questions to ask before joining | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance policy | Who reviews applications, and does the group require a chat introduction? | A request can remain pending until the right leader or founder sees and approves it. |
| Membership permissions | Which blocks, ships and bases are shared with members? | Faction membership enables sharing, but the group still decides what to expose. |
| Shared-grid access | Will members receive access to the equipment you need, or only to selected projects? | Access is useful only when the relevant owner configures the grid or blocks for faction use. |
| Leadership trust | Who can invite, confirm and kick members? | Leaders control entry and removal, so you are trusting them with your membership status. |
| Diplomatic stance | Is the faction pursuing peace, war or another server-specific policy? | The faction system supports war and peace declarations that can shape multiplayer play. |
There is no universal “best” faction in the official material. The right group is the one whose acceptance process, access rules, leadership and diplomatic stance match your goals on that server.
Troubleshooting the faction menu
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Join control will not complete membership | Join submits an application rather than granting immediate access. | Contact the faction in chat and wait for a leader or founder to accept the request. |
| You cannot apply to a different faction | You are still a member of your current faction. | Leave the current faction, then select the new group and submit Join. |
| You joined but cannot use a ship or base | The construct or its blocks have not been shared with faction members. | Ask the owner or an authorized player to configure the relevant ownership and faction-sharing controls. |
| You expected leader controls as an ordinary member | Inviting, confirming and kicking are leader powers. | Ask a leader to perform the action or clarify your role in the group. |
| You are unsure whether protection applies | Your application may still be pending. | Confirm that a leader or founder accepted you; pending applicants are not documented as members. |
| The keyboard instructions do not match your platform | The cited official material documents the keyboard workflow only. | Use the platform’s equivalent Terminal control and locate the Factions tab; do not assume the keyboard shortcut is universal. |
A concise checklist
- Press K to open the Terminal.
- Open the Factions tab.
- Leave any faction you currently belong to if you are switching groups.
- Select the target faction and click Join.
- Use chat to notify the group that you applied.
- Wait for a leader or founder to accept the request.
- After acceptance, configure or request faction sharing for the blocks and grids you need.
- Remember that leaders, not ordinary members, control invitations, confirmations and removals.
The essential distinction: application versus membership
Most confusion comes from treating the Join button as the final step. It is only the request. The complete sequence is application, review and acceptance. Once accepted, faction sharing and documented member protections can apply; before acceptance, you remain outside the group. Keeping that distinction in mind explains why a request can appear to have been sent successfully while access to a ship, base or faction weapon protection has not changed.
