The quickest route is the developer console: enable it in Settings > Game, open it, and run connect IP:PORT. You can also add the address through CS2’s Community Server Browser or Steam’s View > Game Servers menu.

The port is part of the address. An IP without its port may point to the wrong service or fail to connect, so copy the entire address from the server operator or a current server listing.

What you need before connecting
Have these details ready before opening CS2:
- Full server address: an IP address followed by a colon and the port, such as
144.48.106.196:27035. - Password, if required: private community servers usually provide the current password through their operator or community.
- Steam running: this is required for the Steam server-list route and for browser-based
steam://connectlinks.
Do not remove the colon or the port. In 144.48.106.196:27035, 144.48.106.196 identifies the host and 27035 identifies the service port. Replace both values with the address supplied for your server.
Method 1: join with the CS2 developer console
The console method sends a direct connection command and is usually the shortest workflow once the console is enabled.

- Completely overhauled with better graphics, new characters, items, and environments
- Package includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Day of Defeat: Source
- Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay

Enable the developer console
- Start CS2 and open Settings.
- Select the Game section.
- Find Enable Developer Console and set it to Yes if it is disabled.
- Close the settings screen. Press the key assigned to the console; on many keyboard layouts this is the
~key. The actual key can vary with the layout and your key bindings.
If the console was already enabled, you can open it immediately with its assigned key. A console panel should appear over the game.
Enter the direct-connect command
- Copy the complete address, including the port.
- Click in the console input line.
- Type
connect IP:PORT, replacing the example text with the real address. - Press Enter and wait for CS2 to attempt the connection.
For example, the command for the address shown above is connect 144.48.106.196:27035. Keep the command on one line and do not add spaces around the colon.

Connect to a password-protected server
If the server asks for a password, enter the current credential supplied by its operator. Shockbyte documents a combined command in this form: connect <IP:Port>; password <password>. You can substitute the real address and password, or run the connection command and provide the password when CS2 prompts you.
A password is controlled by the server operator. If the prompt rejects your entry, obtain a fresh password rather than guessing; operators can change credentials without changing the IP address.
Method 2: use CS2’s Community Server Browser
The in-game browser is useful when you prefer menus, want to keep a server in Favorites, or want to use the browser’s refresh and list controls.

- From the CS2 main menu, click Play.
- Select Community Server Browser.
- If CS2 displays an acceptance or confirmation dialog, accept it to continue.
- Press the + button to add a server.
- Enter the complete
IP:PORTaddress. - Select the resulting entry and click Connect.
The address must be entered exactly as supplied. If the entry does not appear, check that the port is present before trying a refresh or adding it again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMethod 3: add the server through Steam’s Game Servers window
Steam provides a separate server-list route that can save an address outside the CS2 menu.
- Open the Steam client.
- Click View in the top-left menu.
- Choose Game Servers.
- Switch to the Favorites tab.
- Click the + button at the bottom of the window.
- Enter the server’s IP address and port.
- Click OK, then click Refresh.
- When the server appears, double-click it to connect.
This sequence is the documented Steam workflow for adding a server to Favorites. If the list remains empty after a refresh, verify the address and confirm that the server is currently online.
Saving a server for future sessions
Favorites are the practical choice when you return to the same community server. Add the address through CS2’s Community Server Browser or Steam’s Favorites tab, then use the saved entry instead of retyping the IP each time.
Saving an entry does not change the server’s address, status, password, or access rules. A server can disappear from the live list while remaining in Favorites if it is offline, has changed its port, or is temporarily unreachable. Refresh the list and compare the saved address with the latest information from the operator.

Using a steam://connect link
Some server-list pages expose a link using the steam://connect/... protocol. Keep Steam open, activate the link, and approve the browser’s request to open Steam if prompted. Steam should pass the address to the client.
Protocol links depend on the browser-to-Steam handoff. If clicking does nothing, opens the wrong application, or leaves CS2 disconnected, use the console command or one of the server-browser procedures instead. Verify the full IP and port before switching methods; a protocol link cannot correct an address that is incomplete or outdated.
Console versus browser: which route should you choose?
| Consideration | Developer console | CS2 or Steam browser |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Requires enabling the developer console and knowing its assigned key. | Uses menu controls; no console command is needed. |
| Connection action | Type connect IP:PORT directly. |
Add the address, refresh the list when needed, select the entry, and connect. |
| Repeat use | Requires entering the command again unless you keep your own note. | Favorites can retain the address for later sessions. |
| Failure diagnosis | Provides a direct command, making it clear which address CS2 is attempting. | Provides an entry, refresh control, and visible list state that can show whether the server is being discovered. |
| Best fit | Quick one-off connections or cases where you already know the exact address. | Regular communities, players who prefer menus, and anyone who wants a saved Favorite. |
Neither route is a performance test or a guarantee that a server is reachable. They are two ways to submit the same address to CS2 or Steam.
Troubleshooting a CS2 connection
The console does not open
Return to Settings > Game and check that Enable Developer Console is set to Yes. Then use the key assigned to the console for your keyboard layout. If that key is not producing a panel, check your active key binding and try again before entering the command.

The server does not appear in the browser
First compare the entry with the original address character by character. The most common actionable mistake in this workflow is omitting or mistyping the port. Add the server to Favorites, press Refresh, and allow the list time to update. If it remains absent, ask the operator whether the server is online and whether its port has changed.

The connection stalls or disconnects
Confirm that the server is currently online, copy the address again, and try the other connection route. For example, use connect IP:PORT if the browser is not completing the connection, or add the address through the browser if the console attempt fails.
There is no single fix for every stalled connection. The documented steps establish the address and client workflow, but a failure can also depend on the server’s current availability or the network path between you and it. The useful first checks are therefore status, exact address, port, and the alternate route.
You receive a password prompt
The server is requesting credentials. Obtain the current password from the server operator or its community and enter it when CS2 asks. If a previously working password no longer works, treat it as changed or expired and request the latest one rather than repeatedly retrying an old value.
A Steam link does nothing
Make sure Steam is running and approve the browser’s request to open it. If the protocol handoff still fails, copy the address shown by the link, verify its IP and port, and use the console or browser method manually.
You are unsure whether the address is complete
A usable direct-connect address has the form IP:PORT. Ask the operator to provide the complete string if you received only an IP, a hostname without a port, or a truncated link. Do not infer a missing port from another server; different servers can use different ports.

Understanding the address you were given
Why the port matters
CS2 needs both the host and the service endpoint. The IP identifies where to send the request, while the port tells the client which server service should receive it. That is why the command is written as connect IP:PORT instead of just connect IP.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why punctuation matters
The colon separates the IP from the port. Entering a space, replacing the colon, or copying extra characters can produce an invalid command or an address that points somewhere else. Paste the address exactly, then inspect the beginning, colon, and final digits before pressing Enter.
Why an old Favorite can stop working
Favorites save an address; they do not track every change made by an operator. If a community moves to a new port or host, update the saved entry with the replacement IP:PORT. A refresh cannot repair an entry whose underlying address is obsolete.
A practical decision path
- Have a complete address and need the fastest attempt? Enable the console once, then use
connect IP:PORT. - Return to the same server regularly? Add it to CS2 or Steam Favorites so the address is available from the list.
- Prefer not to use commands? Use Play > Community Server Browser, or Steam’s View > Game Servers workflow.
- Have a clickable Steam link? Try it with Steam open, then switch to manual entry if the protocol handoff fails.
- Cannot connect by either route? Recheck the complete address, confirm the server is online, obtain any required password, and ask the operator whether the endpoint has changed.
What the server operator may need to confirm
When client-side checks do not resolve the problem, send the operator the exact symptom and the address you attempted. Ask them to confirm:
- That the server is online and accepting players.
- That the IP and port you received are current.
- Whether the server is private and requires a password.
- Whether the password has changed.
- Whether the community has moved to a different endpoint.
This information distinguishes a local entry mistake from a server-side availability or access issue without relying on repeated guesses.
Quick Recap
