Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal Kindle jailbreak recipe. Whether a method works depends on your exact Kindle model and variant, its installed firmware, and sometimes whether it can be registered and displays lockscreen ads. Start with the current KindleModding jailbreak wizard, then read every instruction for the method it selects before changing files or connecting the Kindle to Wi-Fi. A jailbreak is not guaranteed, reversible, or risk-free.
Check your Kindle before choosing a jailbreak
KindleModding’s wizard asks for the first eight serial-number digits, firmware version, whether the device can be registered, and whether it shows lockscreen ads. Use those details to identify a currently applicable route; a guide written for another Kindle or firmware may not work for yours. KOReader’s documentation likewise says jailbreak eligibility depends on the model, its specific variant, and current firmware.

Find your firmware version in the Kindle’s settings, then enter it along with the other requested details in the wizard. If you do not know whether the device can be registered or whether it has ads, establish that before selecting a method. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking Kindle or a method’s name.
Have a computer and a USB data cable that fits your Kindle’s port if the selected instructions call for file transfer. Connector type varies by Kindle; a suitable cable you already own is enough.

Understand the risks and limits first
Firmware updates can close a route
A firmware update may make a jailbreak method unavailable. KindleModding’s FAQ says that if a device is on unsupported firmware, its owner must wait for a new method or patch. It also says Amazon does not provide a stock-firmware downgrade path: downgrading requires the Kindle to have already been jailbroken. Do not update or try to roll back firmware based on an old guide.
For example, the WinterBreak instructions state that WinterBreak/Mesquito does not work on firmware 5.18.1 and later. That is a method-specific warning, not a general compatibility chart. Use the live wizard and the selected method’s current instructions rather than treating a legacy walkthrough as a universal recipe.

Registration status does not decide compatibility by itself
KindleModding’s FAQ says Nosebleed reportedly works for some blacklisted devices, but that does not establish that it will work on a particular Kindle. An unregistered or blacklisted device still needs to be checked against its model, firmware, and other conditions in the wizard.
A jailbreak does not turn a Kindle into an Android tablet
KindleModding’s FAQ says Android apps generally cannot be installed unless an extension or port exists for a particular app. A jailbreak can enable compatible Kindle software and modifications; it does not provide general Android app support.

Follow the selected method’s instructions in order
- Open the current wizard: enter the first eight serial digits, firmware, registration ability, and lockscreen-ad status at KindleModding’s wizard.
- Read the full instructions for the method it selects: check its device and firmware requirements, preparation, jailbreak procedure, and post-jailbreak setup before changing files or connecting to Wi-Fi.
- Prepare only as that method directs: the wizard advises filling device storage to help prevent updates during preparation. Treat this as method guidance, not a guarantee or a universal substitute for the selected instructions.
- Complete the jailbreak and any required setup: do not skip the method’s post-jailbreak steps. If your firmware or device state is unsupported, stop rather than improvising from instructions for another model.
- Verify the required installation route: only after the jailbreak and setup are complete should you follow the applicable instructions for an app or plugin.
Install KOReader using the route your setup supports
KOReader’s Kindle installation guide supports installation on jailbroken Kindle devices, but the jailbreak and required post-jailbreak setup must already be complete. The route depends on firmware and jailbreak history: current supported setups may use Kindle Package Manager (KPM), while older setups may need manual USB file transfer and a launcher. Follow the guide’s current device-specific instructions instead of mixing steps from different generations.
Current supported setups: KPM
KOReader describes its KPM installation method as experimental. For supported configurations, its guide documents the commands ;kpm update, ;kpm upgrade, and ;kpm install koreader. The KindleModding KPM guide specifically describes updating its official KPM repository with ;kpm update and installing KOReader with ;kpm install koreader. The package appears as a scriptlet and can be started with ;kpm launch koreader; removal is documented as ;kpm uninstall koreader. Use only the commands and repository steps that match the instructions for your jailbreak and device.

Older setups: manual package and launcher
Some older jailbreak configurations require copying a firmware-appropriate KOReader package over USB and using a separate launcher. KOReader’s guide describes different routes by firmware and device, including the kindlehf package at firmware 5.16.3 and above, and other packages or launchers for older firmware or non-touch Kindles. Those details are not interchangeable; consult the guide’s current instructions for the exact device and jailbreak history.
When KOReader is running, switching the Kindle to USB mass-storage mode is unsupported and risks crashes, according to its guide. Close KOReader before connecting for mass-storage file transfer.

Choose books and add-ons with care
Know KOReader’s format and DRM limits
KOReader’s Kindle guide says it supports EPUB best, but does not support KFX or DRM-protected books. A successful installation therefore does not mean every Kindle book or file can be opened.
Check plugin and patch provenance
Plugins and patches are optional and are not all endorsed by KOReader’s developers; incompatible add-ons can break features or crash the reader. Prefer add-ons documented by the project, check their origin and compatibility, and investigate problems at the add-on’s source rather than assuming every plugin is safe or maintained.
